He thought what he could do for the equality of human beings. The caste system was deep-rooted. As lower-caste people had no education, they had accepted this mental slavery for ages. Jyoti, therefore resolved to revolt against the mental slavery and to educate the lower-caste people. He became the first Indian to start a school for the untouchables and a girls' school in Maharashtra. We recognise him today as Mahatma Phooley. 11.
