2 Directions (Q. Nos. 1-5) Read the following passages carefully and answer the questions that follow. Passage I The wise old Wazir was famous for his judgment and people came to him for justice from all parts of the country. One day two men came to his court and claimed ownership of an extraordinarily good-looking horse. It was a black beauty indeed. One of the men was tall, very well-dressed and soft-spoken. The other one was just the opposite. Each of them said that the horse was his. The Wazir heard them patiently and asked them to leave the horse and come to him next morning. Both the men came the next morning. The Wazir asked his soldiers to give the horse to the tall man and to arrest the other man. The tall man wanted to know how the Wazir had learnt the truth. 'Very simple', said he, 'Firstly, a man of your appearance and manners could not have been the thief. Still, I wanted to be sure, just after you had left the court. I asked one of my soldiers to leave the horse free and to see whom it followed. It went after you. This hint was enough for me'. 1. Which of the following best describes the other man? a. 3 justice. 5. This story proves that a. the court soldiers were very smart b. the judge was quiet old c. the horse was very clever d. the judge was indeed quite intelligent The story starts on this note and one becomes famous for judgement only when one is quite intelligent. Passage II Just because there is no atmosphere on the Moon, there can be no seas, rivers or water of any kind. We are accustomed to think of water as a liquid which does not boil away until it reaches a temperature of 212, but if ever we picnic high up on a mountain, we find out our mistake. We soon discover that water boils more easily and at a lower temperature there than on the plains below. The reason is that there is less weight of air to keep the molecules of the liquid pressed down and so prevent them from flying off by evaporation. If there were no air pressure at all, the water would evaporate no matter how low its temperature and this is precisely what would happen on the Moon. 6. 'Atmosphere in this passage stands for a. mental or moral environment b. spheroidal gaseous envelope c. the germinal matter from which all life springs d. the rise and fall in a barometer 'Atmosphere' means an envelope of gases. 7. It is on account of the atmosphere on our Earth that we have a. the cycle of seasons b. canals, lakes and tanks c. mountains and plains d. water in all forms Ans.(d) On Earth water is present in all form which is the one of the reason of existing life on Earth. 8. Absence of air pressure on the Moon will cause a. exhaustion b. evaporation of water c. water to freeze d. blizzards If there is no air pressure water will start evaporating. 9. Water boils at less than 212 when a. we apply more heat b. there is more evaporation c. there is less weight of air in the atmosphere d. the molecules of the liquid are not pressed down Water boils at less than 212 0, when there is less weight of air in the atmosphere. 4 10. Water will not evaporate, if a. it is boiled at a low flame b. the temperature is very low c. the kitchen is air conditioned d. there is adequate air pressure With air pressure evaporation decreases. Passage III Jyoti, a gardener's son, was once invited to attend the marriage ceremony of a Brahmin friend. Since, he loved his friend sincerely, he attended the ceremony. The bridegroom was going in a procession to the house of the bride. The procession consisted of Brahmins, men, women and children. There was hardly any person from other communities. Jyoti was walking along with the processionists. One orthodox Brahmin recognised him and was annoyed at the sight of a low-caste boy in the marriage procession walking along with the Brahmins. Unable to contain himself, he shouted, 'How dare you walk along with us? You are not our equal. Get behind, otherwise go away'. Jyoti felt insulted. He abandoned the procession and returned home. He narrated the whole incident to his father with anger in his eyes but his father advised him to observe the old customs. That night Jyoti could not sleep. He thought what he could do for the equality of human beings. The caste system was deep-rooted. As lower-caste people had no education, they had accepted this mental slavery for ages. Jyoti, therefore resolved to revolt against the mental slavery and to educate the lower-caste people. He became the first Indian to start a school for the untouchables and a girls' school in Maharashtra. We recognise him today as Mahatma Phooley. 11. According to the passage, which of the following has primarily made low-caste people accept the mental slavery? a. Poverty b. Old customs c. Apathy of change d. He analysed the problem of the lower-caste people and took measures to get rid of it through social service. 14. Why did Jyoti attend the marriage? a. He was advised by his father accordingly b. He was invited by the father of the bride c. The bridegroom was good friend of Jyoti d. Not mentioned in the passage The second sentence of the first paragraph gives the reason. 'Since, he loved his friend sincerely Jyoti could not sleep that night because a. he had to attend the marriage of his friend b. he wanted to do something for the lower-caste people c. the Brahmin insulted his friend d. his father was sick Although (c) option seems to be correct but Jyoti was unable to sleep that night because he wanted to do something for the lower-caste people.
