On he Augus holday weekend my ssers and I reurned o he small vllage n souhwesern Onaro where we grew up, for a weekend-long gaherng and celebraon of our local culure. I was a lo of fun bu also very nosalgc. In he laer par of Augus we had a cousns reunon a our coages on Georgan Bay. Egheen of us gahered for a weekend of food, fun and a re-ellng of he old sores. On boh weekends our roos were exposed as we alked abou so many hngs ha happened n he pas - and so many people who are no longer here o share he fun wh us. These wo weekends ended wh quesons as o why we don ge ogeher more ofen, and promse o do so - hese wll be by and large no kep. I am lookng forward o anoher famly reunon n Sepember when our Clan Macpherson Assocaon Branch gahers n Kngson. Each year ha I have aended has been a grea me o ge reacquaned wh frends of long sandng and o mee new members who I hope wll become frends. Whle each of hese occasons had a dfferen bass, he raonale s he same. I s our unversal need o have a sense of communy and an deny wh our roos. In our fas paced modern culure, growng up and sayng n one communy for lfe s no longer he norm. In pursu of our personal and fnancal objecves we are called upon o pull up sakes leavng famly and frends behnd wh hopes of makng new frends where we land. Bu famly and roos are always here. I can repor ha Alasar and I have me over 400 overseas Macphersons, and I can confrm here s nohng o bea Macpherson hospaly worldwde. The generosy and kndness of he Canadan membershp has lef us wh lasng and fond memores. The hospaly we receved was exceponal. In 2009, whls aendng my frs Canadan Gaherng, I was nved o aend he Councl meeng. I was mpressed wh he gavel and block used and made commen abou how useful was. I hough nohng more of, unl a parcel arrved n Scoland conanng a beauful hand-made gavel & block as a gf from Bob Archbald, known from hen on as Shelagh s Shllelagh. The Canadan branch conrbues a grea deal o he Assocaon, for example: over he las 20 years he Canadans have generously sponsored a Scosh Wldca a he Hghland Wldlfe Park, near Kngusse. Las year he Assocaon launched s own Facebook page and hs could no have been acheved whou a huge amoun of work and organsaon carred ou by Mark Macpherson and Jacquelne Murdoch and las, bu defnely no leas, Gordon Macpherson has made an ousandng conrbuon o he CMA by producng all he shelds on our heraldry wall n he Museum n Newonmore. On a personal noe, I am exremely graeful o Gordon for gudng me hrough my Peon for Arms whch was graned earler hs year. We had hree ems on our wsh ls; o see an ceberg, whales, and puffns. We flew no Deer Lake / Cornerbrook o begn he our n he souh wesern corner of he provnce and headed norh up he Vkng Tral followng he wesern coas hrough Gros Morne Naonal park and vsed he fshng por of Por au Chox. From here we urned eas oward S Anhony and L Anse aux Meadows, he home of Lef he Lucky and he Vkng people who seled hs area around 1000 AD. I was here ha we sghed our frs ceberg. We crossed he Sras of Belle Isle on a ferry o Labrador, where we vsed Red Bay whch was a whalng saon for he Basques people n he early 1500 s Then was back o Newfoundland by ferry where he our headed souh along The Arches on he Vkng Tral he Vkng ral vsng The Arches, no no McDonalds, bu a rock formaon carved ou by he acon of he sea. Boh of us became Honorary Newfes when we were screeched n durng a boa our on Bonne Bay. Ths nvolved dancng a wee jg, kssng he cod, repeang he Screech oah and drnkng a sho of Screech rum. Probably because of he rum I only remember he oah endng n n cod we rus. We headed eas o Grand Falls where we saw Alanc salmon makng her way up a fsh ladder o ge by he falls. The our, amongs oher places, sopped a Bonavsa, where John Cabo made landfall n We raveled he Avalon Pennsula where we ook a boa rp ou o he Wless Bay The puffns a Wless Bay Ecologcal Reserve and saw our frs puffns. The mos easern pon of Norh Amerca, Cape Spear, s our las sop before enerng S John s, he oldes cy n Norh Amerca. I has neresng places such as Sgnal Hll, whch ncludes Cabo Tower where Marcon receved he frs ransalanc rado sgnal n 1901, and s famous Jellybean houses, so named because each house n he row s paned a dfferen brgh colour. 4 AT THE GAMES THIS SUMMER By Mark Macpherson n he July ssue of he Green Banner we repored on he games ha Bob Archbald and Marlene had aended n June on behalf of he Branch. Snce ha me Bob has organzed our booh a hree games and Bll Macpherson a fourh n Augus. We have se up our repor n he order n whch each of hese games occurred: Hghlands of Durham Games July 28 July 28 was a grea day for he games a Uxbrdge. The Organzng Commee had proclamed Clan Macpherson as he Honoured Clan so we were ou n force hs year for he openng parade. Bll our Vce Char led he colour pary conssng of Rober J. (Bob) Archbald our games exper, Chanal our Regsrar, Rober W Archbald our Hon. Secreary, and hs lovely wfe Sondra. Mary Margare Glles and Jm & Marlene McPherson joned he group laer on o help saff he Macpherson en wh Bob and Marlene Archbald. Bob s granddaugher Hlary, danced boh Saurday and Sunday and aced boh days; four frs place medals boh days, and a rophy each day for her performance n her age group (14 o 16 yrs). She also receved a Dancer of he Games rophy, whch alhough s normally shared, she has for herself for a year oppng 400 oher dancers n all oher age groups by her superor accomplshmen. Nne enhusasc clansmen and clanswomen lned up behnd he Clan Macpherson parade banner for he march on he openng ceremones. Sprs were hgh as we carred he old green banner, he new assocaon banner dsplayng he CMA arms, and hree aran banners. Several Macpherson war cres Creag Dhuhb! were shoued as we marched around he rack. We ddn hear any answerng cres from he oher more sold clans presen, so we held he ground. In he clan exhb buldng (a feaure of he Glengarry games, whch ceranly beas a en when rans), Bob and Marlene Archbald had se up he Clan booh. Several passersby were araced o he Clan Macpherson dsplay some of whom were Macpherson s vsng Canada from he USA. These people were encouraged o jon he US Branch. The Clan Macpherson parade group for he openng ceremones a Maxvlle Lef o rgh: Chanal McPherson, Shannon Bush Presco ON, Bob Archbald, Mark Macpherson, Peer Fsh represenng he US Branch from Keene NY, Anne Laure Macpherson, Tmmns ON, Graham Macpherson, Presco ON, Gordon McPherson, Oawa,who s Chanal s broher. Mssng s June Macpherson who ook hs phoo, and Marlene Archbald who s lookng afer our booh durng he parade The Glengarry games hs year araced a large conngen of ppers, ahlees, and dancers who compeed n he hea durng he day. There were los of merchan ens some of whch were able o exrac some money from us for hngs such as a badly needed fur sporran and some Scosh ems for hs year s Chrsmas gfs. Monreal Games Augus 5 The forecas for Sunday Augus 5 a Monreal was no encouragng wh heavy showers. Bob was no sure on he 4 h ha he and Marlene would be akng he coach from Maxvlle o Monreal a rp of abou an hour. On reflecon laer, he recalled ha Clan Macpherson was o be he honored clan, so he decded o pu n an appearance where afer seng up he en n he mornng, Marlene and he parcpaed n he openng ceremones a noon along wh a few oher clans presen. Shorly afer he openng, he ran arrved n orrens and our conngen decded o pack up and reurn o Por Hope. Bob advses ha all was no los as he local beer and smoked mea sandwches were grea! Fergus Scosh Fesval Augus 11 The Fergus games hs year were a lle we whch dampened he sprs of he vsors.. The Macpherson en was n evdence and araced a few people who expressed an neres n jonng CMA. Some ook away applcaon forms so we wll see f we have some new members n he fullness of me. Sales were also good wh revenue exceedng coss whch always makes our Hon. Treasurer happy. The Assocaon Councl meeng on Thursday was called o order by Charman Shelagh. I had been nved as an observer on behalf of our Canadan Branch. I was exremely mpressed wh how he meeng progressed and he dedcaon and professonalsm of all hose who aended. On Frday we wen o he open ar Hghland Wldlfe Park I has been weny years snce he Canadan Branch presened a donaon for he preservaon of he Scosh hghland wld ca. Cluny and Shelagh unveled a plaque commemorang hs annversary. There were wo pars of cas and a par of kens n aendance ha were very eneranng. The radonal Hghland Ball sared on Frday evenng wh he Chef's recepon, followed by dnner n he dnng room. Afer he meal we hen adjourned o he ballroom where he dancng commenced. Everyone, ncludng he young people ook par, had a whale of a me. On Saurday mornng he AGM a he communy hall n Newonmore was opened by Shelagh. For he nex hour and half, we heard repors from he varous execuve members ncludng an neresng b of news from he Museum on he newly avalable archve of all he pas ssues of Creag Dhubh on DVD. Followng he elecon he new Assocaon Charman,.John Macpherson, he branch charmen read her repors. The Canadan repor was presened by me as he represenave of our Charman. Our Chef ended he meeng nong he wonderful effor made by Shelagh durng her erm. He welcomed he new slae of offcers and expressed graude o all hose who were n aendance. The Newonmore games go underway under sunny skes a he local shny feld whle some seveny plus kled men of Clan Macpherson were led off wh colours flyng and kls a swayng n sep wh he ppes and drums. A he head of he column srode our Chef, Cluny. Wha a grand se! We marched pas n a salue o he Chef of he Games, Sr Tommy Macpherson. Durng he march I was honored o carry he Cromag for he Canadan Branch. The Celdh were he order of Saurday evenng, where a hlarous me was had ncludng; musc, sngng, and assored oher performances by varous clansmen and women. I conrbued by sngng Loch Lomond, whch n my opnon was rendered o he cred of he Canadan Branch. In shor, a really good me was had by all. The Sunday mornng church servce was held a S Columba Church n Kngusse, and n he afernoon here was a pcnc a he se of he Assocaon Carn a Glenrum, The vew was specacular as we sa upon blankes spread for our sandwches, and famly fellowshp. Wh Gordon acng as heraldc consulan and ars, he Arms soon began o ake shape. We sared wh some of he radons aken from he Arms of Cluny, our chef, ncludng he galley, crossle and dagger. To make personal o me, here s an open book ha represens my professon as a eacher. In addon, he wld ca s holdng a gold con o ndcae my work n he fnancal world. The 3 bay leaves are aken from he Noble Coa of Arms and I am parcularly proud of hs because he Lord Lyon s usually relucan o nclude reference o a spouse; however he old me he would make an excepon n my case. You wll see ha my Arms are no on a sheld and hs s because shelds are reserved for genlemen; lades Arms are eher on a damond (or lozenge) shape or on an oval. I chose he oval. 6 EDWARD SMITH e dward (Ed) Smh joned he Canadan Branch hree years ago and has been an acve parcpan a our Gaherngs ever snce. He dscovered CMA and hs Clan connecon whle aendng games n Calforna. In 2010 he aended he Clan Museum n Newonmore and was suffcenly mpressed ha he decded o aend he Gaherng here hs summer. As he sole parcpan from Canada hs year, he represened our Charman a meengs and carred he Canadan cromag n he march on he games from he Elan. He s a nave of Pars ON and grew up here. He was marred and rased hree chldren wh hs Scosh wfe. He has sx grandchldren. Ed s a meal worker who sared on he shop floor and worked hs way up o Engneerng where he was responsble for he Weldng deparmen. He also ook on jobs as a long-erm supply eacher o fll hs me when he was on shf work. When hngs slowed down n he meal fabrcaon ndusry he wen on he road as a long-haul ruck drver where he worked for nne years before rerng. He served n he mla for 27 years n an arllery regmen, fnshng n he rank of Maser Warran Offcer. He enjoyed hs mlary servce parcularly when he was an nsrucor. Ed has many neress oudoors: He has saled n races on he Grea Lakes, plays golf, ndulges n kayakng, canoeng, cyclng and fshng. I hough ha maybe f I approached Macpherson s and relaed famly names who were ham operaors, as anoher Ham, hs could help o break he ce. I dd a search of hs daabase and came up wh 160 hs across Canada. A package was desgned wh a personal leer from me addressed o he ham operaor, a personalzed applcaon form, and a copy of he July Green Banner. A he same me he Provncal Councllors agreed o look up he elephone numbers of he prospecs n her provnce and call hem o deermne her neres. The mporan hng o ake away from hs s ha we mus hnk of nnovave ways o reach as many Macphersons n Canada as we can, whou breakng he bank.
