1 JULY-AUGUST 2017 Faith Community United Church of Christ Dialog 1126 Anderson Ave. Maumee, OH facebook.com/faithcommunityucc Scott Kaufman, Pastor Mel Barrios, Certified Lay Minister B.J. Lord, Secretary / Dialog Editor Star Gazing Out-of-This-World VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Monday through Friday, 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 31 to August 4, 2017 Pastor s Message Summer is officially here. July and August are traditionally the hottest days of our summer season. This is the season of Pentecost which some churches call ordinary time. Many people, including people from our church, do a lot of traveling in these months. But the life of the church still continues. Don t forget our regular worship services every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. We begin this season by celebrating the birthday of our country. Here at Faith, we also have Vacation Bible School at the church from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from July 31 through August 4. As we celebrate our country s birthday on July 4, we must not forget our Christian faith and the part it played in our roots of becoming a nation. Many people who made the trip across the Atlantic did it so they could worship God as they saw fit. Or not worship any God if they chose not to. We live in this great country where the people are a l l o w e d t o m a k e f r e e choices in their lives. Not all people have that freedom. Our Christian faith is a choice we make. We are not forced to become Christians, and we are not forced to be involved in our churches. But in order to have a church, people are needed to attend on a regular basis and become involved in the church s continued on page 2
2 Page 2 July-August 2017 Pastor s Message continued from page 1 activities. There are important benefits that come from being in church on Sunday morning. You get to worship with fellow Christians that affirms our faith showing we are not alone and have support from our fellow worshipers. There also is a time for good fellowship after the worship service to catch up on people and their lives and find out their ups and downs as well as sharing your own. Many of you knew Betty Huntebrinker, who passed away in late May. She knew the importance of churches and being involved in them. She, along with Florence Heinig, her friend of 79 years, started the Good Bunch several decades ago. The group is still meeting on a regular basis today under the leadership of Mel Barrios. Betty also remembered Faith Community UCC in her will. Much of Betty s money was used up for her late in life care, but her family still remembered Faith by giving us a monetary donation. I hope each one of you know how important you are to Faith Community in Maumee. Without each of you on Sunday mornings, and supporting all the activities of the church, there is no church. I hope all of you choose to be in church on Sunday mornings. Sincerely, Pastor Kaufman HAPPY BIRTHDAY July 2 Richard May July 7 Debra Trail July 8 Ruby Burkey July 11 Eugene Billings July 22 Jason Smith July 26 Ray Titera July 27 Barb Gillmore Aug. 4 Glenna Scanlan Aug. 11 Scott Kaufman Aug. 11 Carolyn Allion Aug. 11 Donna Creswell Aug. 12 Hailee Elizabeth Ehrhardt Aug. 14 Dale Allion Aug. 16 Ruth Farnsworth Aug. 16 Barb Hadley Aug. 17 Bob Walters Aug. 27 Mary Anderson HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Please remember the following people in your prayers this month. Betty was born on April 1, She was the youngest child of funeral director Bert and Rose Leon. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harold Leon; and her sisters, Ruth Tillotson, Norma Neift, Marion Delye, Dorothy Kilinski, and their spouses. Betty is survived by her children, Bernard Huntebrinker, Jr. (Peg) of Sylvania, Bert Huntebrinker (Cathy) of Stronghurst, IL and Beverly Greaf of Largo, FL; four grandchildren, Deb (Todd) Altic, Paul Huntebrinker, Bret (Ellen) Huntebrinker, and Chad (Tracy) Huntebrinker; eleven great grandchildren, Britton, Haley, Tyler and Sydney Altic; Lexi, Kenzie, Gianna, Vaughn, Kolbe, Mason, and Cole Huntebrinker; nieces, nephews, and many friends, especially from United Commercial Travelers 694. Betty worked over 25 years at Owens Illinois in Toledo as an executive secretary. Early in her working career she worked for Graphic Arts Corporation of Toledo. After losing much of her sight to macular degeneration, her constant companion were her talking books. In their 80's Betty and her husband Bernard struck out on a new adventure moving to Largo, FL. She was a long time member of First United Church of Christ in Toledo and then Faith Community UCC. At Faith UCC many years ago she and Florence Heinig started the Good Bunch at the church, which still is active with senior activities decades later. She, her husband Bernard, and friend Florence traveled from the east to the west coast. Visitation for family and friends of Betty was held in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) on Friday, May 26 from 12 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty's name are kindly requested to Franciscan Care Center, Toledo, or Hospice of NW Ohio. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sister Jordan and all the staff at Franciscan Care Center for their compassionate care and support.
4 Page 4 July-August 2017 Rummage Sale The Spring Rummage Sale of 2017 is now a memory. It went very smoothly and was quite successful. The church made over $1,300. It was a week of hard work and fun. It was my first year to take on some of the responsibility of organizing the sale. Mary Anderson and I worked together under the direction of our Executive Director Charlene Reese. I thought we made a good team. We could not have done it alone. I would like to thank everyone who donated their treasures for us to sell. Thank you donators for folding clothes, washing knickknacks and sizing and bundling linens. You have no idea how much we appreciate this effort. A huge thank you goes out to the worker bees! Whether you worked the whole week or a day or two, we could not have done the sale without you. Mel provided the sturdy tables we needed to display the clothes and our neighbor next to the parking lot also loaned us tables, along with tables from other church members. Thank you Mary and Carl Anderson for providing lunch on Thursday and Mel Barrios who provided lunch on Friday. By the time we put the church back in order and took a caravan of five vehicles to Savers on Saturday morning we were all tired but content knowing it was a successful job well done.
