Being that I am the editor-inchief of the Miami Beach Police Department Retirees Newsletter, I really have no one to supervise me, expect for President Vinny; and, since President Vinny is busy keeping the rest of you in line, he really has no time or energy to oversee this operation. So I'm allowed free rein. I can run amuck. I do as I please. I do what I want, when I want to do it. I'm the sheriff, the boss, the headcheese, the cheese head, the 'man', the one and only, the 'jefe'. There are no suspense memos. I'm not trying to become accredited, and I'm not interested in obtaining any awards or accolades. I am what I am and I'm not much of anything, if anything. You can take that to the bank and take it as you please. You can sue me all day. You can jump up and down and scream. It won't help. I'm unstoppable and unaccountable. I'm a loose cannon, a rabblerouser, and a non-conformist. If you're not happy with this, you can certainly text me, or me if you get no response. I don't have a home phone, but I do have a cell phone. You can call me, but I might not answer; or I may have changed my number. You can like me on Facebook, or Twitter me. I don't have a Twitter account. Feel free to reach me on LinkedIn, although I On Friday November 21, 2014, a breakfast was held at the Blue Moon Diner in Cooper City with 20 people attending. Retirees attending were: Rocco DeLeo, Ray Chambers, Vinny Aprile, Pat Quinlan, Paul Masters, Don Freeman, Billy O Neil, Charlie Seraydar, Bobby Bauer, Jimmy Mauro, Jason Psaltides, Bobby Jenkins, Howard Zeifman, Alan Skolnick, Pat Ryan, Tommy Wilson, Marilyn Tepperberg, Greg Butler, Tommy Lederman, and Mike Pryor. don't have an account with those folks either. Send me a letter. I forgot my address, sorry. Perhaps Vinny can reach me, although he's got no time for this foolishness either. Either way you're stuck. Just live with it, whatever that is... Be that as it may, I waited until after Thanksgiving to begin writing this column because I wanted to wait as long as possible, just in case there were important things to report. Nothing important to report here. By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you out there. Woke up Thanksgiving morning and knew I had some work to do. We were expecting a few guests and it was my duty to prepare various items for the evening's feast. As soon as I woke up, I felt exhausted from sleeping all night, so I plopped myself down on the sofa and turned on the television. I thought I'd missed it, but I was just in time to see the Thanksgiving Day parade in Ferguson, Missouri. Wow, how wonderful and exciting. First of all, it was a snowy day, but everyone looked invigorated and full of life. This year, in addition to the usual floats and attractions, the parade included the St. Louis Sheriff's SWAT Team and Riot Squad, in Addition to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Missouri National Guard. 2 z Sam s Corner... z A Special Collection of Enormously Disorganized Thoughts WOKE UP ON THANKSGIVING MORNING AND knew I had some work to do. The floats were done in a clever and whimsical fashion; military style trucks, SWAT trucks, and Rolling Command Centers. The crowd loved the theme-"ferguson, Year of the Shitheads." They were holding up signs, chanting, throwing bottles, rocks, and Molotov Cocktails. (This is a tradition in Ferguson and signifies how thankful they are to be in the United States of America, where you can act like a total, ungrateful, inconsiderate, idiotic scumbag and still earn the respect of folks like you all over the country). The revelers (I've heard them called rioters or protestors and I don't get where that comes from, because they seem to be r e a l l y n i c e f o l k s ) s h o w e d t h e i r appreciation to the hard working business owners of Ferguson by performing a ritual called "burn this bitch down", where they lovingly proceeded to destroy half the city and burn down a number of businesses. Many local and nationwide clergy, political figures, and media representatives applauded these young men and women who were so loving and passionate about this beautiful and heartfelt Thanksgiving ritual, that they endorsed it and even endeavored to explain it in a positive manner. Do you see anything wrong with that? Neither do I. In many countries, there are yearly traditions, which although dangerous, have stood the test of time. For example, in Spain, there is the running of the bulls', or the 'tomato fest', where people throw thousands of tomatoes at each other. Here in Ferguson, there is the 'turning over of the police cars', where hundreds of peaceful partiers join up to flip over, burn, and destroy perfectly good police cars worth thousands of dollars and paid for by hard working taxpayers. This is a fun and comical ritual which no doubt earns us the respect and envy of countries all over the globe. Whenever I can save up the money, my plan is not to visit the Smithsonian Institution, or Cape Cod, or Niagara Falls, or any of those stupid, childish attractions. No sir-ee... Next year, I'm going to Ferguson, Missouri for the annual "burn this bitch down" festival. Those of you with children should consider doing the same. Why take your kids to Disney World, Universal Studios, Grand Canyon or a museum. Take them to a place where they can learn about American history (well...the dim future of American history) and enjoy a cheap 2 for 1 cheeseburger at McDonalds. That is...if they haven't burned that down too! This just about says it all!! One of our retirees (Retired Detective Sgt. Howard Bennett) recently had a close call after suffering a heart attack at home. (I will reprint his explaining his ordeal next month when I have more room). Usually, due to privacy issues, I do not identify members with health issues unless they put it out there to the membership, which Howard did, and I'm glad he did. In his well-written , Howard explained that had it not been for his wife, he'd probably be dead right now. In fact, Howard was dead, for 3 to 3 1/2 minutes...as his wife raced to the hospital! Thankfully, Howard is now on the road to recovery. A few days later, I was having a conversation with another retiree who had the almost the exact same experience. That ( 2 ) retiree will not be identified because he chose not to "put it out there". We are all getting older folks, and some of us are in better shape than others. Both of these retirees, in my opinion seemed to be in very good shape. But you never know. I'm not writing about nutrition, or how to take better care of ourselves, since these are subjects I know absolutely nothing about. I'm not even writing about the warning signs for heart attacks. We all know about those too. The scary thing is, that there are more warning signs than I originally thought; such as pains in the body where we normally get pains, that we think are something else, like gas or a pulled muscle that is actually a heart attack in disguise. Nope, I'm not even talking about that! I'm talking about what these two retirees said about the 3 minutes they were 'under', and what they felt, or didn't feel, or see, or didn't see. Also, while thinking about this phenomenon, I also recalled several other retirees who had similar experiences. I thought about calling them and speaking to them about it, but decided against it. While some might feel it's ok to share their experiences, others might be offended, and I certainly don't want to do that. It would be akin to someone calling me out of the blue and asking me how I felt the day I got divorced. Yes, I can talk about it now, but why the heck would I want to? So, Howard pointed out in his that there was "no tunnel, no light, and no odor of brimstone." The unidentified retiree explained it was like having surgery, you get the shot or the gas, and you're out. Then, you wake up in recovery and wonder when the surgery will begin, yet it's over. I've had some surgeries and that's exactly what it's like. Of course, what he's trying to say is that unlike the surgery, when you die you just don't wake up. You're in la-la land... forever. This revelation triggered a rather spirited discussion on religion and science. Two more things I know nothing about. The unidentifiable retiree explained that because of this near-death experience, he is now a "non-believer." Well, he may have been a non-believer before, but now he's really one. This led me to the concept of heaven and hell. Now, I'd like to say that I'm not an overly religious individual. I do have my beliefs. I'd like to say that I believe in a supreme being or spirit, or something like that; someone who, for example does

z Sam s Corner... z A Special Collection of Enormously Disorganized Thoughts possess the power to tell me how to run this newsletter. Not someone to blame if I screw up, which could land me in serious hot water, but someone to thank when things go right, if you can understand my way of thinking. So, I like the concept of heaven. It's a nice concept and I think that's why most folks like it. Was it created by humanity to make them feel less apprehensive about dying? Perhaps so. I can understand that too. Along those lines, we'll say that the concept of hell was created to scare people straight and let them know that, if they do evil and don't repent, they'll end up somewhere hot, getting their butts poked with pitchforks. If all this seems overly simplistic and childlike to you, it is. Like I said, I'm not well versed on religion and I'm not about to start looking at a bible or online to ascertain what exactly is written about heaven or hell. Let's just say I'm explaining it in the simplest of terms, in other words, what I've always understood about it. To take it a step further, the reason I like the concepts of heaven and hell is that I'd like to know that if you live a fairly good life, help and many people as you can, do the best you can, and not be too much of an a--hole, then there's a nice little, happy place waiting for you when you die. As far as the hell, I'd like to know that those who rob, steal, rape, murder, or otherwise endeavor to make others lives miserable should know that there are consequences as well. The thing that confuses me is that someone very close to me who is much better versed on the Biblical aspects of heaven and hell explained that you can be the nastiest, cruelest, vilest jerk in the world, and still get to heaven if you give yourself to Jesus...but you have to be sincere! The key word being sincere. So, what if you are sincere, but you were really a scumbag? I was told that you can now get into heaven. Wait a minute! Time out! I think that's a crock. The conversation ended there. I don't give a rat's butt if you're sincere. If I'm the guy in the main office who decides who gets into where, and Charles Manson (who just got married, believe it or not!) comes in with his application, and tells me he's really sincere, guess what? He gets to use the slide to hell. He won't get there fast enough. But some will say that if he's "sincere", he'll go to the "Kingdom of Heaven", or whatever. This is very confusing to me. Anyway, getting back to the experiences of the two retirees who were lost for three minutes, I'm not sure if (provided there is a heaven and/or hell) that was enough time for the paperwork to go through for the transfer. I would think that when you die, it would normally take at least five to seven minutes for the paperwork assigning you to one place or the other to be routed to the appropriate agency for disposition, (not including travel time). Some folks, like the Pope, or Mother Teresa have their paperwork already prefilled so when the event occurs, they are already on the way up. Others, like Charles Manson, Hitler, or Osama Bin-Laden perhaps had their paperwork filled out to speed their trip down. The two retirees, who seem like pretty good chaps, didn't have this special privilege, so they were technically in limbo; thus, the black screen. I've got this all figured out already. You know, I like writing about this stuff. Maybe next year if you'd like, I'll give you a few more of my thoughts on the afterlife. But until then, take care folks. The REAL holidays are upon us, and I wish each and every one of you a very happy holiday season, whatever you choose to celebrate... or not. Happy New Year and I will take up where I left off in Let's hope it's a better year for this screwed up planet! z DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS z Lenny Alamo, Chris Dee, Lou Fata, Irwin Goodman, Tony Holt, Joe McCormack, Joan Donnelly-Ochoa, Richard Pelosi, Jason Psaltides, Rosa Redreullo, Pete Rodriquez, Ted Schempp, Steve Stuart, Lewis Sugar, William Teasdale, Gene Toreky, Carl Ward, Robert Williams ( 3 )

z Retiree News and Other Tidbits z A PIECE OF MBPD HISTORY, BY BEA BERNSTEIN I wanted to thank the MBPD Retirees Association for mentioning Bert's new book, and I hope those of you will enjoy Bert's book when you find the time to read it (of course, you should buy it first!) I am finally getting around to writing about my time working at the Police Department. First I want to give you some background: We moved to Miami Beach in 1943 from Washington, D.C. My parents opened the first luncheonette on Miami Beach. The name of it was Royal Luncheonette and it was at 738 First St., right across the street from the Police Department (1st & Meridian). I was 13 years old and used to help out in the store after school. It was a popular place for Police Officers, Judges, lawyers and defendants. The courtroom, located on the second floor in the south end of the building, was used by the Municipal judges and the Justice of the Peace. I was always told that someday I would work at the Police Department. After graduation from high school, I attended the University of Miami for one year and then decided to take the Miami Beach civil service exam. I passed the test and received my appointment to be a clerk/typist at the Police Department. Around 1950, I went to work as a clerk in the Identification Department at the Police Department. My salary was about $65 a week and I was extremely happy. At that time, anyone who worked in services on the Beach had to have an I.D. card. Lt. Bruce Simmons was my boss and he was very strict. Bill McDonald worked in I.D. and he made it a pleasant place to work. I would type up the I.D. cards after the people were finger printed. A year later I was transferred to the Traffic Bureau across the street. I used to collect the parking fines ($1.00) and then file the cards away. Sgt. Johnny Hyle was my boss and he was wonderful to work with. The Chief of Police was Burt Simpson. My job required me to work 5 1/2 days a week. Bert and I were married Feb. 25th which happened to be in the height of the winter season. Simpson refused to give me a half day off so we had no customary honeymoon. their support. Thanks to Jon Anderson for providing the funeral details below: "Sandy Kohan passed just after midnight. He had suffered a heart attack on Thursday and lost the battle last night. A service was held at the Florida Avenue Baptist Church located at 401 South Florida Avenue., Avon Park, Florida on Tuesday, November 25 at 11:00AM. A Lunch followed after the service. Again, please keep the Kohan family in your thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time." GEORGE LERRA AND WIFE LAND SPACESHIP ON A COMET A very warm and heartfelt congratulations goes out to Retired Lt. George Lerra and his wife Linda for pulling off a brave and historic feat on November 12th. The happy couple was able to successfully land the Rosetta space probe Philae on a comet shooting across space millions of miles from earth. The next morning after the landing, they posed for a picture on the surface of the comet, and then nonchalantly climbed aboard a waiting intergalactic shuttle. They were subsequently whisked to Logan International Airport in Boston to catch a flight home. In an interview later that week, George downplayed their heroic accomplishment while munching on Fritos and sipping on a Blue Moon. The epitome of cool, if you ask me! Why did they do it? According to Linda-"It was just one more thing to cross off our bucket list". Next year, George and Linda plan to attempt an extremely dangerous adventure by driving a Toyota Prius on I-95 from 62nd Street to 163rd Street during rush hour. We wish them the very best! The spaceship Philae piloted by George and Linda Lerra landing on a moving comet in space. Arriving at night made the landing more difficult. Sgt. Al Lampley ran the taxi cab division in the rear of the building. I think it used to be a garage. Buddy Dresner was also connected with that office and he was a lot of fun to work with. Bert and I were responsible for a new rule that was implemented when we were both working at the Department. The city fathers decided that a husband and wife couple could not work together for the same department for any reason. Since I was 5 months pregnant with Jeff I had no problem with the ruling. I then retired. I do want to add that I have been a travel agent for forty years and we have more than made up for the honeymoon that we did not have! Best Wishes, Bea Bernstein! Despite a lack of breathing air, George and Linda Lerra appear pink and healthy as they pose for a photograph on a comet in outer space. It's the only comet in the universe with trees. PASSING OF A RETIREE, SANDY KOHAN, BY CHARLIE SERAYDAR To All Retiree Members and Friends: Our condolences go out to the Kohan Family on the death of Brother Sandy Kohan, who was 87 Years of Age. Sandy suffered a Heart Attack last Thursday (November 20th, 2014) and he passed away about Midnight last night (November 24th). The family thanks everyone for their prayers and RECENT RETIREMENT NEWS We have some recent retirements to report. Congratulations to the following personnel. We wish them the very best as they enter this new chapter of their lives: Lieutenants Alberto M. Estraviz, Lieutenant Bruce H. Johnson, Sergeant Lorenzo Han, and last but absolutely not least, Sergeant Darrell S. Prieto. ( 4 )

z Hot Off the Press!! z FOP NOMINATIONS, FOP EXECUTIVE BOARD To All Interested Members and Friends from the FOP (Past President Alex Bello): Brothers and Sisters, as you may know already, this evening, nominations were held for Executive Board positions in the FOP. In an unprecedented move, all nominations went unopposed. Below is a list of all the members and their position. Please join me in congratulating them and wishing them success in their new positions FOP Executive Board Bobby Jenkins - President, Kevin Millan - 1st Vice President, Rigo Olivera - 2nd Vice President, Ray Diaz - Secretary, Samuel Azicri - Treasurer, Jerome Berrian - Sgt- At-Arms, Steven Cosner - Inner Guard, Robert Azicri - Outer Guard, Chris Mitchell - Chaplain, Gus Sanchez - Trustee, Doug Simon - Trustee, Reggie Lester - Trustee, Alex Bello - Past President CMB COMMISSIONER ED TOBIN=ROOKIE MBPD OFFICER ED TOBIN This is an interesting piece. Ed Tobin, a current sitting city commissioner and lawyer got his colleagues on the city commission to change an ordinance to allow him to apply as a Miami Beach Police Officer. The interesting thing is that Tobin helped approve the ordinance two years ago that kept him from applying; but now he wanted to be exempted from it...politicians!! At 52 years of age, he decided that it was time to make an effort to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a Miami Beach cop. He even took steps in 2011 to make that dream come true by successfully graduating from the police academy. So the story is that when Tobin was 18, he really wanted to be a cop, but his parents were dead set against it, so he became a lawyer instead. Of course, he eventually moved up in the world and got himself elected as a Miami Beach Commissioner, which I guess is an honorable thing, depending on who you ask, (just don't ask me). So this is a very interesting story. If he does get hired, how would it work, going from basically being a Miami Beach lawmaker to a Miami Beach law enforcer? I'd love to see how it plays out. I recall back in the early 80's, when City Manager Rob Parkins was also a reserve police officer. He used to ride with me on occasion, and as I recall, he was pretty good. But times were different then. "Officer Tobin" might get into a situation where he does or says something that, as a commissioner he would criticize an officer for doing, but because he's a cop, he might possibly have a better understanding of the realities of the street. I think it might be an interesting project to undertake. I don't know Ed Tobin, and I don't care to know him. I haven't heard anything good or bad about him and I wish him the best. Perhaps it might be good for 'royalty' to finally get to experience what the REAL Miami Beach is like; to wit, the Miami Beach that emerges after hours, when the scumbags come out to play. Best of luck to him! -Editor S. Gam CAPTAIN JULIO YERO, SURFSIDE POLICE DEPT. BY CHIEF DAVE ALLEN I am pleased to announce Julio Yero as the new Captain for the Surfside Police Department. As you are aware, I was interested in an experienced police commander with expertise and experience in law enforcement operations including patrol functions, criminal investigations, internal investigations, and special events. Captain Yero has all this and more. He is a recently retired Lieutenant with the Miami Beach Police Department who has held command positions in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Internal Affairs Unit, and has managed staffing and logistics for many Special Events including the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Spring Break, Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July and New Year s Eve celebrations in Miami Beach as well as leading a contingent of Miami Beach Police Officers as a security detail in Washington, DC for President Obama s Inauguration. He has supervised the Homicide Squad and investigated many murders as well as several high profile death penalty cases and police officer involved shootings. He was also the Commander of the Hostage Negotiations Team for the past seven years and worked ( 5 ) closely with the SWAT Team on numerous critical incidents. Most importantly, I sought a sound, decisive leader with a strong work ethic who will be accountable and hold others accountable. Captain Yero has these qualities and comes from a law enforcement family and has family residing in Surfside. He began his career as a Surfside Police Officer. Please welcome him home. (Captain Yero was sworn in on November 3, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Surfside Police Department. No doubt his dad- Julio Yero Sr. would have been very proud) Chief Dave Allen swearing in Captain Julio Yero RETIRED MAJOR JOHN DICENSO John DiCenso is back at Surfside, this time as the interim Town Manager. He was previously Assistant Chief at Surfside PD after leaving Miami Beach. We don't know if he wants to be the permanent Town Manager, but as soon as he makes his decision, we will break into your television programming to make that announcement. Hopefully it won't be during "Dancing with the Stars". ORGANIZATIONAL CHART One of our members was kind enough to send us the current MBPD Organizational Chart (see page 7). Notice that communications is no longer associated with the police department. We thought you'd get a big kick out of how things of changed over the years. z z z

The 2014 MBPD Retirees Holiday Party! ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH, 2014 On Saturday, November 15th, 2014, the Annual MBPD Retirees Association Holiday Party was held at the Tropical Acres Steakhouse on Griffin Road in Dania Beach. There were 60 retirees and guests attending. The food was delicious and the company was great. At the party we honored Celia Locke for her thirty years of service working as the Executive Director for the Miami Beach Police and Fire Pension System. President Vinny spoke about Celia, and pointed out that when we first heard of her retirement, our first feelings were of shear panic! Then we realized that as professional as Celia is (and when you look up the word professional, you would find Celia's picture there), she would never ever leave without training someone to take her place. The new Executive Director is Donna Brito, who has been working with Celia for four years. Director and her loyal staff of Myriame, Eileen and new employee Ceila. Celia advised that it has been an honor and privilege serving each retiree, beneficiary and active member along with the Union presidents. She also thanked us for the support and respect that she had been shown over the past 30 years. Celia also stated that she has been blessed to be able to work in a job that she truly enjoyed working, along with people that she respected. May God bless you all who have gone into harm s way for the rest of us. We also honored a couple of our over 80 s members, Ray Duncan and Gene Toreky. We only started to honor our over 80 members in February. We have always had the tradition of giving free membership to our over 80 members but we wanted to do more by recognizing them at our luncheons. We appreciate the history they bring to the organization which many of them being founding members of our organization. Celia has been a true friend. The people who worked closest with her throughout the years, included FOP presidents like Ray Duncan, Joe Brownlow, Lynda Veski and Bobby Jenkins. Others included Pension board members like Lenny Veski, Greg Butler and Bill Riley. Chief Dan Oates was unable to attend the luncheon but the new Chief of Staff Wendy RichGoldschmidt attended in his place. That is why the second feeling that came to mind is 'gratitude', which is why we joined together as a group to celebrate Celia's retirement with George. During the ceremony, President Vinny Aprile presented Celia with a photo album that was engraved "To Celia, Thank you for being our friend from the Miami Beach Police Retirees Association ". Celia was also given a check for $1,175 from the Retirees Association. We also welcomed Celia as a lifetime member of the retirees association.
