4 1 WHEREAS, Jesus Chamorro graduated from George Washington High School in ; and after graduating from high school, he began serving the people of Guam as 3 an employee of the Public Utility Agency of Guam (now the Guam Waterworks 4 Authority); and 5 WHEREAS, in 1958, Jesus enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 25th 6 Infantry Division "Tropic Lightning" at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii; and 7 WHEREAS, in 1961, Jesus Chamorro married Sylvia Francisco Campos, and 8 together they raised four (4) children: Mark, Sylvina, Matthew and Mikangelo; and 9 WHEREAS, after returning home from serving in the Army, Jesus worked at 10 the Department of Revenue and Taxation, where he held numerous positions and 11 performed various duties, to include Processing, Processing Supervisor, Audit, Audit 12 Supervisor, and Technical and Research; and he was detailed to work in Saipan to 13 assist the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands (CNMI) in the adoption of the U.S. 14 Internal Revenue Code in their tax system; and 15 WHEREAS, in 1973, Jesus received the Chi Omicron Gamma, Honorary 16 Scholastic Society of University of Guam (UOG) Award for his outstanding scholastic 17 achievements and academic excellence; and 18 WHEREAS, in 1976, Jesus Chamorro began working at local radio station 19 KUAM 610 with his brother, Tommy Charfauros, when they took over the 20 "Chamorro Hour" radio show, which later became known as "Programma 21 Chamorrita," which filled the airwaves with Chamorro language and music; and 22 WHEREAS, in 1985, Jesus Chamorro retired from the government of Guam; and 23 after retiring, he worked for Landscape Management Systems, Inc. (LMS) and 24 DeBiasi Landscaping; and 2
5 1 WHEREAS, in 1989, Jesus Chamorro began Programan Kombessasion and 2 performed in numerous evening Chamorro shows at several local venues, such as Joe 3 & Flo's, Lanchos, Major Mango, Cheap Charlie's, Double A and Mungi Lounge; and 4 WHEREAS, in 1991, Jesus Chamorro received the Guam Annual Media 5 A ward for Excellence in Public Service Program/Broadcast; and 6 WHEREAS, Jesus Chamorro will forever be remembered for his passion and work to 7 preserve the Chamorro culture and language through music; and his knowledge and 8 creative use of the Chamorro language has inspired countless local Chamorro singers 9 and artists; and 10 WHEREAS, Jesus Chamorro will forever serve as a role model to many of our 11 island's radio disc jockeys, who have been inspired by his eccentric, entertaining, and 12 original on-air performances; and 13 WHEREAS, during the UOG Spring 2012 Commencement Ceremony, Jesus 14 Chamorro received an honorary Master of Micronesian Traditional Knowledge from 15 the University of Guam to honor him for his lifetime of work in promoting the 16 Chamorro language and culture; and 17 WHEREAS, in September 2012, Jesus Chamorro was honored at a celebration 18 on his behalf in a musical event called, "One More Night with Jesus Chamorro 19 Charfauros," where numerous Chamorro musicians came together to play many 20 popular Chamorro songs; and 21 WHEREAS, the musical and cultural legacy of Jesus Chamorro Charfauros 22 will forever remain and continue to live on in the hearts, minds and memories of the 23 people of Guam; and many people will fondly remember how he would often end a 24 joke or finish his program with the phrase, "Oba Skoba!"; now therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, that the Committee on Rules of I Mina 'Trentai Dos Na 26 Liheslaturan Guahan does hereby, on behalf of I Liheslaturan Guahan and the people 3
