1 an ff 5 VOLUME 3 NUMBER 44 STONY BROOK, N.Y. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 970 Black Students United a Opinion Recognize Prejudices By STU EBER Te defacement of Professors Walker, Golson and Lipton's doors is just te most recent politicalracial incident on tis campus. Wile te vast majority of students, faculty and administrators ave been content to sit back tis year and talk about ow "tings bave cal med down," small but significant events ave been occuring. Black people are demanding teir rigts as uman beings. Tey ave reaced te point were tey feel tat any attacks upon tem sould be met in kind. Witin te past mont Black Students United and tis paper ave ad a confrontation regarding a news story tat was racist in content, if not in design. A group of black and wite students confronted eac oter over te question of a late party one nigt. A casier in te Union and some blacks ad a eated argument over an overcarge. Swastikas ave appeared in Gerswin College wic attempt to link BSU and antisemitism. Tese overt incidents, plus more subtle forms of racial confrontations as placed BSU in te precarious position of issuing teir succinct militant note to te University community. t is very easy to sit back and talk about ypersensitivity and overreactions. t is convenient to play sociologist and deal in abstract terms wit te poverty cycle and institutionalized racism. t is selfsatisfying to point out te prejudice of oters and infer ones' own purity. But it is difficult, if not impossible, to directly confront yourself and examine your own mind and ow te sickness and ate as destroyed your ability to live wit oter people. Above all, wat man can onestly say e is te cancer but is working to discover te cure? Te fact is tat wite students ave been provoking black students. We are fond of saying tat we're different from te Sout, but a ex sign was all te vandals left on Mrs. Walker's door. WARNNG!!! Open letter from Black Students United, to te Racist Universities of Stony Brook. Let tis warning serve notice tat We. te Black community at Stony Brook, ave found it necessary, at tis time, to openly confront all LiberalConservative/racist on campus. Te administration, faculty and students ave subtly embarrassed, overtly intimidated, openly arassed and tried to inflict violence on te Black faculty and students. Tis is THE FNAL WARNNG TO ALL OF YOU. Te next incident perpetrated against Black people, weter small or large, will be taken as an act of open aggression against te Black community at large. AND WE WLL RETALATE N SELFDEFENSE. Te fact is tat black students ave been provoking wite students. Bleeding earts tend to ignore te pus and sove, te treats at knife point and racial comments directed at wites. Te fact is tat all people conveniently stereotype. Alec Pond didn't deface mm Waker's door nor would e sanction suc an action. Two black students were recently arrested on drug carges, but tat does not mean tat Black Students United in any way wants to contribute to te drug market at Stony Brook. Te seeds of ate and destruction are witin all of us. But tat does not mean we sould allow social conditions to be rationalizations for our instincts. We must be willing to face eac oter and recognize our own prejudices. Te incidents will continue. We can do noting to prevent tem. But te violent mass confrontations tey tend to breed (Cornell, CCNY, Queens) can be avoided if we try to deal wit oters as people, not political or social labels. STATEMENT BY T. A. POND Marc 7, 970 "Te incident was repreensiblea discredit to te entire University. Column Blacks To Transcend Martyrdom BY ROBERT CALLENDAR Tere is suc a ting as de jure segregation, tat is wen te course and tendencies of racism becomes protected under te constitution. Tere is also anoter ting called defacto segregation, and tat is wen te effects of racist beavior is not considered criminal in spite of te contemptuous conduct of te ruling class, or autoritative citizenry. n bot cases, tere ave been provisions under certain laws to promote a sow Mack studff Program Dbrector Ann Mae WCkr of false adjudication. For an Oscar, it would be perfect, but for te person wo is "te victim," all tis language and conduct means is tat, wenever wite racists are ready, tey can declare open season on Black people, and te law as, witin its structure, te capacity to suppress te complainant. Well, it stands to reason tat in te most mentally, unproductive community, te suppression of a legitimate voice leads to tat voice transcending te subordinated capacity in wic e exists and begins to deal condescendingly and metodically wit is enemies. We, te Black people of Stony Brook, tis racist institution, do ereby recognize tat you, all te wite racists, ave declared open season on Black people. Wat is permeating ere at or. walkers dow f a/ Stony Brook is simply a reflection of a nationwide trend. Tere was te Panters in California, llinois and New York. Teir destruction, bot collective and individual, is an example of wat te American religious wite racist as in store for Black people living on borrowed ground. n te immediate racist environment of Stony Brook, youtful wite racists bum crosses on te doors of Black faculty members, plus tose wite faculty members wose association wit te Black nation implies a lucrative association and te potential missing link between te mutual institution of te wite racist culture. Understand tis, te Black people ere at Stony Brook do not intend to be te martyrs of te seventies. Tis is a period in wic we find transcending te current trends to be a most satisfying life giving force. Black people are not saying tat open season will be met by someting wic is ludicrous, barbaric and reflective of witeness displaced. Wat we are saying is tat open season by wite racists and Black people is going to create one of te most classic examples of evolution, one wic would cause Darwin to turn in is grave and tell all you oter wite racists to cool it, cause you are dealing wit a generation tat is, by nature of our teacings, prepared to transcend above and beyond te stage of martyrdom. So wite racists, you ad better cool it, cause you can't cope wit it.

6 Page 6STATESv'AN Marc Marc 8, 970 Compulsion Won t Work Next year. te Office of Teacer Preparation plans a new program of incommunity residence for student teacers. Te program, wen fully enacted next Spring wilt require all tose seeking certification to live in te community in wic tey student teac. Te program as definite advantages over te current system, bot educationally and practically. t s enactment sould create more available spaces for student teacers by allowing teir placement in scools outside of te immediate campus area. and students living in te communities in wic tey are teacing need exposure to different environments and te insigts tat community residence can elp provide n poverty areas in Wyandnc. Riveread, Bellport and New York City suc exposure is'vital. However, te mere placement of te student teacer in suc an environment will not insure interaction wit te community. Students will be living in otels and motels wit oter students, not in te neigboroods wit tose tey are teacing. (Peraps a secondary aim for te program is to elp solve te campus ousing problem). Te Education Department sould understand tat student teacers are still a part of te University, tey must be given te coice to decide were tey will live, on campus or off. Te goal of te Education Department sould be to provide alternative, meaningful structures and not arbitrarily enforce any one; tis will lead to resentment on te part of tose forced into te program. At a meeting for student teacers on Monday nigt. Provost for Education Palmer stated tat if students do not go along wit compulsory incommunity residence ten, " will assume students do not want to become certified." He continued, "f you want to become certified go to anoter scool, like Fredonia, Cortland or New Paltz." Te arrogance of tese statements reveals an icy indifference to te needs of students wo want to teac. pwyr and te director of teacingpreparation. S'r Kreuter. spew fort lofty principles, but te facts indicate tat teir real motive is to discourage students from student teacing. Te number of student teacers will be limited to tree undred per semester. f J tere is an overload of applicants tey will be screened by te following criteria grades, te number of openings in te cosen field and if te student as taken a metods course tat satisfies te department. We ave known all along tat te University does not ave adequate staff or te desire to prepare large numbers of students for teacing. And now te eads of te Education Department are going along administrative priorities at te expense of te student body. Palmer and Kreuter are quick to point out tat te idea of incommunity residence was first tougt of by students during te Tree Day Moratorium. t is true tat students expressed te desire for community involvement, especially in getto areas. We question just ow meaningful residing in a otel in Setauket or Port Jefferson can be. Te Education Department is betraying te real aims of incommunity residence by forcing students to live off campus. nstead, tey sould educate students to te need for residing in certain communities and provide willing students wit te means to do so. Te Education Department must realize tat a program of coercion is doomed to failure. We urge tem to eliminate compulsory offcampus residence in teir plans for incommunity residence. f te program is to survive its goals must not be obscured by a flood of student rage and resentment. Racial Strife Yesterday's racist vandalism calls to mind te tenseness and conflict wic plagued tis campus last Spring, culminating in a near riot and a student strike. Te causes were attributed to a polarization bot racially and politically of campus sentiments; over reaction and paranoia were caracteristic of te actions of all sides. We ave te setting now to repeat last Spring. Tere was a racial incident; BSU as reacted to tat incident. Te logical progression will occur unless all of us. all of us, first analyze our own attitudes and attempt understanding wat we react to wit fear. resentment, or antagonism. Obviously, tere are some amg. L? w o 2re incapable of rational beavior but tere is no reason for tis campus of supposedly intelligent people to discard logic and turn to teir emotions. Minor incidents will probably continue to occur, if only from misunderstandings; it is up to eac of us to prevent tem from escalating into a racial war. To a Cristian, Holy Tursday is a memorial of te Last Supper. Good Friday commemorates te most significant event in te istory of mankind. Almigty God, in te person of Jesus Crist, allowed imself to be nailed to a cross and ang tere for tree ours of indescribable agony, to sow is love for te uman race. No greater gesture of love for fellow man as ever been made by anyone. Te significance of tis act may be explained briefly. Wen God created te world and mankind, e created a paradise. But Man, in is pride, sinned gryvously against God and was driven from paradise and lost is rigt to immortality. But God, in is infinite mearcy, promised tat Man would be redeemed by one wom e would send. Little did Man know, ten, tat God imself would come, as Jesus Crist, to make amends for te sins of te world. Crist, indeed, could ave mapped is fingers and ave accomplised te Redemption. However, e cose to sow man ow muc God loved te worid. And so, te Lord of All, te Almigty and Eternal God, took on te fles of Man and for tirtytree years e knew joy and eartbreak; sickness and ealt; te warmt of friendsip and te cold of loneliness; and, in fact, experienced every facet of uman life. He spoke only of love. He made te blind see, te crippled walk, te lepers clean and te sick well again. Wen is our came, one of is cosen friends betrayed im into te ands of murderers. He was led like a. lamb to te slaugter. Scourged, beaten, crowned wit torns and nailed to a cross, is only gesture to is tormentors was to raise is eyes to eaven and cry out, "Fater, forgive tem; tey know not wat tey do!" For tree ours e ung tere in agony and umiliation; is eartbroken moter standing beneat is cross. Te Redemption accomplised, e ten willed up is spirit and allowed imself to die. Satyricon is Fellini's submission to is dreams, and wat occurs is te totality of fantasy, a kingdom tat exists as a magnificent imperfect spere, referring only to its creator for guidance. Wit is fantasy triumping, Fellini can gleefully lure us into being swept away spellbound, our bodies limp and flailing, ' to become participants in te world of is mind, witnesses to te most spectacular visual cinematic orgy of decadence, splendor and unrestrained lust ever filmed. Fellini's work is remarkably faitful to wat remains of Petronius's novel of te odyssey of two boys caugt in te decadence of Rome under Nero. Fellini remains as episodic as te original autor, maintaining little unit structure by te lack of a connection of one cinematic pase to te next. Te only weakness of te film stems from By HAROLD R. Te sentence it breaka is frs, still waiting to be completed. Te words wait to be written. Fellini willingly bestows tis good upon us. Unlike Visconti and Antonioni te two oter talian masters wo released teir films earlier, e as not employed a blasting decadence in order to acieve guilt. His two contemporaries fail because of teir amreaded insistence of our social evils. Fellini as released imself from tis social sceme and is able to make is own pleasures and vices in a world no one else dared to create. And witin tis tingling ugliness e sows us ow to Wurare unarmed. Fellini's world does not end S does Visconti's and Antonioni's. He as one of teir bellowing or teir solemnity. So muc of te Satyricon is funny and deceptive tat e can twist one's sensibilities, making one laugqao te most repugnant of perversions. By enticement into is world of amorality, morals are forgotten and one literally laps it all in. Witout te need for restraint, one feels te s e n sual ity o f rape, omosexuality and blood lust. Fellini makes us frigtened, but tis creation of fear makes us realize a new awareness in ourselves. We travel into tis fantasy to find tat we will discover ourselves in tis place of unreality. Fellini's world does not end wit a bang, but wit a wimsy. His joys, decadent or not, are not to be taken too seriously. Life is cyclical and is not going to stop because of some people's stupidity. Someone else will carry on. We are to revel in Satyricon, wallow in its feast of visual splendor and emerge intact ready to do te same in a world tat ates fantasy. t is all so beautiful tat we need no enticement to e t ayrncon is suc a s ' allucination l i n g irresistablo ' 0 n a t i t i s lik._. A n d w i le we grab s starving cildren at it, Fellini must be grinning.

Conversations wit Atletic Director, Leslie Tompson, and A. Henry VonMecow, wo coordinated Stony Brook's leasing of te gymnasium, cleared up certain misconceptions ad and may ave served to propagate in my article. ad felt tat as atletic facilities at tis University are so limited it was unfair to students to ave tem loaned to ig scoolers. t is now clear tat altoug te gym floor was closed from six o'clock to about nine fortyfive for te Suffolk County basketball games,, te area would not in any case ave been open to University students. On te tree nigts in question te gym would ave been occupied by a men's intramural wrestling tournament, women's volleyball, and an SAB, sponsored teater project respectively. Tis in itself is not a rationale for denying te facilities to te University at large. But te fact tat Robert Snider,, director of men's intramurals, Judit Lapiner, wo coordinates women'ps volleyball, and te student run SAB were consulted lends more credence to t argument. Tese tree groups consented to move or cancel teir events in order to allow te basketball games to be played. And even toug te SAB only consented to cange teir program to te following evening at least te students concerned were not deprived of te sceduled activity. My primary aim was ten and will continue to be in te' future to protect te rigts of Stony Brook students. Since now believe tat te interests of te students were taken into consideration and te leasing of te gym to te ig scools may in te end be a great service to te university in general retract my previous criticism. maintain tat university needs must come first. But if student rigts are guarded, te improvement of communityrelations '.!(as advocated by Lenny Lebowitz's letter on tis page) is an admirable goal to aim forr
