A conversation with F. Lee Bailey, Bailey & Elliott Consulting Co-sponsored by the Criminal Law Section and the Litigation Section Francis Lee Bailey, Jr. is a former criminal defense attorney. For most of his career he was licensed in Florida and in Massachusetts, where he was disbarred in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Among several high-profile matters, he served as the lawyer in the re-trial of physician Sam Sheppard; was counsel to Albert DeSalvo, known as The Boston Strangler ; was the supervisory attorney in the court martial of Captain Ernest Medina for the My Lai Massacre; and was one of the lawyers for the defense in the O. J. Simpson murder trial. From 1952 to 1956, Mr. Bailey also served in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Bailey has had meaningful success in the courtroom as well as a number of visible defeats, and even legal controversies and personal troubles with the law. In 2014, he was denied a law license by the Maine Board of Bar Examiners and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. As of 2016, Mr. Bailey resides in Maine with his partner, and runs their consulting business, Bailey & Elliott. Aware that the court was seeking a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, he pled guilty in order to receive two 25-year sentences (with a chance for parole) to be served concurrently in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. He went on to spend 6 years studying Comparative Religion and Developmental Psychology while becoming a State of Tennessee Board-approved Licensed Barber. Eric was paroled in 2004 after 10 years. Plenary Remarks Youth Justice and Fair Sentencing A Discussion of Reform Eric Alexander Youth Justice Advocate, Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth President-Elect Speeches DeBry & Associates After his release he began to volunteer in Alternative Schools for students with behavioral issues. He joined AmeriCorps Community Health corps and assisted in establishing full service medical clinics inside of local high schools that provided health care to poor and underserved students and families. Eric now serves as the Youth Justice Advocate with the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY). In his role he speaks to groups throughout the country in support of CFSY s public education and advocacy efforts. Eric is a founding member of ICAN or the Incarcerated Children s Advocacy Network. All auction proceeds will benefit and Justice for all. MANDATORY CLE: The Utah MCLE Board has approved the 2019 Spring Convention for up to 10 hours of CLE credit, which includes up to 3 hrs. Ethics, 3 hrs. Prof/Civ, 2 hours for the CLE film presentation (Friday, 3:15 5:45 pm), and 1 hour for the Friday luncheon. Sign in required for all ethics and professionalism/ civility CLE sessions. Separate CLE certificates will be distributed during those sessions for attendees.
