4 I n Yo u r O w n Wo r d s Germain s Story A 12 year-old boy named Germain came to Summer Camp having only attended school for one year (Preschool 1) since his family could not afford to send him to school. He knew how to write some letters, but did not know enough to write his name. I would work with him on writing his first and last name and after some practice, he was able to write it without any help. When I divided the children into two groups, I asked Germain where he would like to go. He asked if, instead, he could sit by himself and write his name over and over again on a piece of paper. Towards the end of camp, Germain would come to class with his hand over his mouth. He showed me a brown, decaying tooth, with a hole in the middle. TOHH arranged for a dentist to come look at and extract the tooth. After Germain s tooth was looked at, his stepfather said the most sincere and grateful mesi (meaning thank you in Creole) that I had ever heard. We posted Germain s story on Facebook as a #SponsorSaturday child. Now, thanks to a generous sponsor, Germain is able to attend school at Mission of Hope International. Germain came to TOHH, and I worked with him to write a letter for his sponsor. After he finished dictating the body of the letter, he proudly signed his name at the bottom of the page. Tree of Hope Haiti changed this boy s life, and his family is grateful beyond words. Cassandra Clemente, Summer Camp Coordinator 2016 Stewart s Story I have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day since I was 15. That means that I have been smoking for over 35 years. I even continued to smoke after watching my father die of lung cancer. Until I met these kids in Haiti, and I thought, Man, I waste a lot of money on cigarettes how many kids could I sponsor if I could just stop smoking? I became very emotional and went inside upstairs at the mission house really looking for help. I sat with my wife, Pam, and Angie and they offered to pray with me. That was Thursday, February 18, 2016 and I haven t had a cigarette since. Now that was definitely, obviously not me I was never able to do that by myself. That was the power of prayer, and of God at work. I honestly haven t even thought about smoking since then. All I think about is the 2 children I was able to sponsor with that money that used to be wasted. I work in an office with close to 300 people, and I can t tell you how many people at my business have stopped me and asked Did you go to Haiti? Why were you in Haiti? I gave one lady the Tree of Hope Haiti website. She went on-line and found all of the kids listed on the sponsorship page and she s been sharing it with everyone around her in the office. I shared it with only a couple of people but maybe 30 to 40 people have now seen the website, seen the kids, seen the houses we built and they are asking How can I help? So it s changing things there and it s changing things here. All from one little week-long trip. It s easy to do it s easy.
