Lakeside Presbyterian Church THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols December 23, 2018, 11:00 a.m. PRELUDE Noël Louis-Claude Daquin HYMN #140 Once in Royal David s City IRBY (verse 1: Will Griewe & Carson Guenther, verses 2-3: choir, verse 4: all) * BIDDING PRAYER The Rev. Louisa Umphres * LORD S PRAYER LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE Leaders: Prepare the way of the Lord. All: We light this candle as a sign of love. Leaders: God s love is like an invincible power, a safe place, a new adventure, a comfy blanket. All: Thanks be to God. Leaders: We know God s love through love from: brothers, aunts, Pops, Grammies, Moms, sisters, Mamaws, Daddys, Grandpas, and friends. All: Sing and rejoice! Leaders: God will renew the people with love! FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:8 15 Jentry Eck God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent s head. Boris Ord Adam lay ybounden, bounden in a bond; Four thousand winter thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, an apple that he took, As clerkes finden written in their book. Ne had the apple taken been, the apple taken been, Ne had never our lady abeen heavené queen. Blessed be the time that apple taken was, Therefore we moun singen, Deo gracias. SECOND LESSON Genesis 22:15 18 Kylie Holloway God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed. Ian Higginson Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine, Love was born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the sign. Worship we the Godhead, Love incarnate, Love divine, Worship we our Jesus, but wherewith for sacred sign. Love shall be our token, Love by yours and love be mine, Love to God and all men, Love for plea and gift and sign. There is no children s sermon. If you plan to take your child(ren) to Nursery Care, you may either take them before the Third Lesson or during the singing of O Lord, How Shall I Meet You. THIRD LESSON Isaiah 9:2 7 Will Umphres Christ s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah.

Philip M. Young Arise, the Kingdom is at hand, the King is drawing nigh; Arise, with joy, O faithful band, to meet the Lord most high. The King is very near; Look up, you drooping hearts today; O cast your griefs and fears away, for lo, your help is here. Look up, you souls weighed down with care, salvation is not far; Look up, faint hearts, from your despair, behold the Morning Star. The Lord is with us now, who shall the sinking spirit feed With strength and comfort at its need, to whom e en shall bow. Arise, the Kingdom is at hand, foretold in ages past, Arise with joy, O faithful band, the King has come at last. For this to God alone we raise on high a gladsome voice, And evermore with thanks rejoice before God s glorious throne. FOURTH LESSON Isaiah 11:1 9 Trystan Guenther The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown. arr. Howard Helvey Lo, how a Rose e er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse s lineage coming, as those of old have sung. It came, a blossom bright, amid the cold of winter, When half spent was the night. Isaiah twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind; With Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind. To show God s love aright, she bore to us a Savior, When half spent was the night. O Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, Dispel in glorious splendor the darkness everywhere; True man, yet very God, from sin and death now save us, And share our every load. *HYMN #104 O Lord, How Shall I Meet You VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN FIFTH LESSON Luke 1:26 38 Rosemarie Deye The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. arr. Fred Gramann The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came SIXTH LESSON Luke 2:1 7 Gary Davis Saint Luke tells of the birth of Jesus. Kelly Vaneman The highway to Bethlehem was rocky and worn As Mary rode faithfully to that first Christmas morn. She could have ridden on a grand, noble steed But instead God chose a donkey: it was all that she d need. He chose the lowly; He chose the small; He chose the littlest one of them all. He chose the humblest of them all. The road to Jerusalem with palm leaves was paved As Jesus rode into town, all people to save. He could have ridden on a grand, noble steed, But instead God chose a donkey: it was all that he d need. He chose the lowly; He chose the small;

He chose the littlest one of them all. He chose the humblest of them all. The path we are walking on is barely begun, But we re chosen to follow it by God s gracious Son. He chose the lowly; He chose the small; He chose the littlest one of them all. He chose the humblest of them all. The lowly, the little, the meek and the small, God chooses the humblest of us all. SEVENTH LESSON Luke 2:8 16 The Rev. Louisa Umphres The shepherds go to the manger. arr. John F. Wilson O who s that yonder? Looks like the shepherds kneeling by a manger, Looks like Joseph standing by a manger, Looks like Mary sitting by a manger, Looks like my Lord lying in a manger. EIGHTH LESSON Matthew 2:1 11 Sterling Pratt The wise men are led by the star to Jesus. Neil Harmon On this day earth shall ring with the song children sing To the Lord, Christ our King, born on earth to save us; Him the Father gave us. Gloria in excelsis Deo! His the doom, ours the mirth; when he came down to earth Bethlehem saw his birth; shepherds kneel before him, Praise him and adore him. Gloria in excelsis Deo! God s bright star, o er his head, Wise Men three to him led; Kneel they low by his bed, lay their gifts before him, Praise him and adore him. Gloria in excelsis Deo! On this day angels sing; with their song earth shall ring, Praising Christ, heaven s King, born on earth to save us; Peace and love he gave us. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Congregation stands. * NINTH LESSON John 1:1 14 The Rev. Dr. Ewen Holmes Saint John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation. * HYMN #119 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing MENDELSSOHN WELCOME The Rev. Dr. Ewen Holmes OFFERTORY John Rutter What sweeter music can we bring than a carol, For to sing the birth of this our heav nly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string! Dark and dull night, fly hence away, And give the honour to this day that sees December turn d to May. Why does the chilling winter s morn Smile like a field besest with corn? Or smell like a meadow newly shorn thus on the sudden? Come and see the cause, why things thus fragrant be: We see him come, and know him ours, Who with his sunshine and his show rs, Turns the patient ground to flow rs. The darling of the world is come, and fit it is,

We find a room to welcome him. The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart, Which we will give him; and bequeath this holly, and this ivy wreath, To do him honour, who s our King, and Lord of all this reveling. CLOSING PRAYERS AND BLESSING Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Let us pray. O God, you make us glad with the yearly remembrance of the birth of your only son, Jesus Christ: Grant that we, who joyfully receive him as our Redeemer, may with sure confidence behold him when he comes to be our judge; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. All: Amen. Leader: May he, who by his Incarnation gathered into one, things earthly and heavenly, fill you with peace and goodwill; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be upon you and remain with you always. All: Amen. *HYMN #133 O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELES VOLUNTARY In dulci jubilo J. S. Bach The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, celebrating the birth of Jesus, follows the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of Messiah, and the birth of Jesus. Told in nine Scripture readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas Carols and Choir music, the format was based on an order first observed in 1880 on Christmas Eve. The best-known version is broadcast annually from King s College, Cambridge. TODAY Christmas Caroling Join the Board of Deacons for caroling today. A list of church members who are homebound or who are glad to have us come sing to them has been made. We drive from home to home, bringing Christmas cheer. Carolers of any age, any ability, are welcome. We simply need you to make a joyful noise. We have caroling books to guide our mirth. We leave the church at 2:45 p.m. JOIN US TOMORROW FOR CHRISTMAS EVE Monday, December 24 Family Candlelight Evening Service: 5:00 p.m. The heart of this family worship service is the pageant telling the Christmas Story, involving all children who wish to be included! We sing familiar carols, and read the Christmas scriptures. Communion Candlelight Evening Service: 9:00 p.m. This service provides time to share the Christmas Story and to enjoy the music of the Chancel Choir.

Your gift will provide assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and developing our future leaders at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color. Offering envelopes are available in your church pew. CHRISTMAS EVE COMMUNION SET UP For Christmas Eve, at the 9 pm service, the church needs volunteers to set up communion and clean up communion trays after the service. It only takes about 30 mins for setup and about the same amount of time for clean up. MURPHY-CAM PROJECT The Murphy-Cam Project is photographic and spiritual journey of man and dog along the river in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Through this journey we found a call to help the homeless neighbors we met along our trek. The latest book entitled Year of the Flood, captures the haunting beauty of the 2018 flood, while celebrating the resiliency of a historic river town through the many festivals along mighty Ohio. It makes a wonderful coffee table book, and a great Christmas gift. The proceeds are going to Our Daily Bread, one of many organizations in Cincinnati making a difference in this community. Help Murphy and I do some good. Books are available at coffee hour today and also Joseph-Beth Booksellers, and my website peterteremi.com. Reach out to Peter Teremi with any questions at pteremi@me.com KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PRESBYTERIAN MISSION WORKERS Visit PCUSA.org for more information about ongoing missions and keep all mission workers in your prayers. DEACONS ARE PROVIDING RIDES The deacons are also trying to identify people in the congregation who are willing to provide rides to those who can t drive themselves to worship. Lynne Baker, or lynne.b416@gmail.com, will be compiling a list of drivers, so please contact her directly if you want to volunteer to be a driver. COFFEE HOUR SHARE CHRISTMAS COOKIES & TREATS Please bring in Christmas Cookies & Treats to share with your friends at the Coffee Hour on December 30th. We are also looking for help with the set up and clean up for both weeks. Paper products will be used. There will be a sign up sheet in Fellowship Hall. Thanks in advance!
