Connie Dicks presents Finances and the 150 th Anniversary of UMW will be observed. Greetings All! As I write this just two days before Thanksgiving I am looking out the window at a winter wonderland way up here on the northern border of Iowa. It s pretty and white but I know that it can be treacherous for travelers. So I keep you all in my prayers as you go about you busy days. Our 2018 Annual Meeting in Janesville was a success. We hosted a wonderful group of United Methodist Women and enjoyed fellowship, training and an excellent speaker. We now look forward to an earlier 2019 Annual Meeting that will held in early September. That will be a change for all of us. As this has been my first year as your president I am still learning but I have a wonderful board of executive leaders to help. I am very grateful to all of them. Sadly, our leadership team is suffering some very difficult health problems. Our dear friend, Judy Porter, past away last month. Our prayers are with her family. Other members to keep in your prayers are Norma Orum, Ruth Tucker, Donna Copper and Jackie Reams. Please pray for improved health and recovery for each of them. We will be planning our special events for 2019 in February at our next executive meeting. I encourage all of you to take one more look at your UMW papers and forms. Be sure all your forms are sent to the proper person by the scheduled date. You will find the 2019 Bible verses in this issue of The Link. If you have questions of any kind please feel free to call or me. If I can t answer them I will find someone who can. The 2019 shepherdess list is also in this issue. You may call your shepherdess with questions as well. You are all in my prayers everyday. I pray that you will continue to do the wonderful mission work of the United Methodist Women. I pray that you will encourage each other to participate in any way you can. I wish you all a very blessed and Christ filled Christmas season! Becky Ullom. Pres. rullom@outlook.com FROM YOUR VICE PRESIDENT Cleo Farris Notice change in location for 2019 Annual NE District meeting. I've talked to the President of the Strawberry Point UMW and she said yes to our request to host the Annual Meeting Fri., Sept. 6th. She also said they would host our executive meeting on Feb. 18th, Monday and the meeting on the 5th of Sept. to get the packets put together. I'll be talking to her again once I know all of the details. Their basement as rooms but we would need to use the stairs so that's the only thing that may be a bit of a problem. Thanks all for your help and hard work as executive team. God bless, Cleo Farris cleoafarris@q.com

Emily Pearce, substituting for Jackie Reams, led the devotions. Barb Collins, Secretary for Education and Interpretation, gave the roll call of units. There were 75 women in attendance representing 31 units. Conference officers were recognized as special guests: June Klinefelter and Chris Werling. There being none, a motion was made by Joann Lambertson that the slate of officers be accepted. Bev Kester gave the second. The motion was carried by unanimous voice vote. Treasurer, Kris Stewart, gave the treasurer s report. She reported an August 1, 2018 balance of $ Receipts for August were $5,677.01, expenses were $5, for a balance on August 31 of $3, The 2018 pledge from NE District to the conference was $62,000. The district has paid $35,899 with $26,101 of the pledge remaining to be paid. The NE District board voted to reduce the pledge to the Iowa conference to $55,000 for At the national level, Iowa conference pledged $475,000. Of that $210,962 has been paid leaving an unpaid balance of $264,038. A candle was lit at 10:20 to burn for 5 hours in honor of and memory of UMW members from the NE District who have passed away during the past year. See the attached list of those honored and remembered. The burning of this candle illustrates how long we have been sharing the light of Christ. Joyce Anderson, president of Nashua UMW, invited the group to come to Nashua for the 2019 NE UMW District Annual Meeting. The business meeting was adjourned. Becky Ullom introduced the speaker, Kip Ladage, a local naturalist, who presented a slide program of his photographs of nature around us, including many from nearby Sweet s Marsh. It was announced that the silent auction would be closed after lunch. The dollars raised will be divided between the three Iowa UMW missions: Bidwell Riverside in Des Moines, Hawthorn Hill and Shesler Hall. The quilts that were brought by NE units and displayed on backs of the pews will be given to Friends of the Family (choice of Janesville UMW). The group broke for a salad lunch with sandwiches as well as a variety of desserts provided by the ladies of Janesville UMW. DOTE groups met after lunch followed by group singing in the sanctuary led by Emily Pearce. Kris Stewart announced that the silent auction netted $349 from 30 items. Kris Stewart announced that the Date certificates were placed in the president s packets. Kris also noted that 47 units were recognized as 5-STAR units. Penny Morse, Coordinator for Program Resources, reported the units that received awards for reading. Instead of certificates, Penny placed bookmarks in the president s packet for the awards. Pastor Linda Thompson from Dysart United Methodist Church served communion followed by the singing of the UMW Purpose song and 149 years of UMW. Becky Ullom, NE District President, expressed thanks to our hosts, Janesville UMW, for their gracious hospitality. Annual meeting was dismissed at 2:30 p.m. Karen Page NE District Secretary Minutes of the Leadership Team of UMW NE District meeting St Mark s UMC Evansdale - 12 November, 2018 President Becky Ullom called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. after the group was served coffee and cinnamon rolls by the ladies of St. Mark s UMW. Those present were Becky Ullom, Pat Huxsol, Donna Copper, Kris Stewart, Karen Page, Barb Collins, Donna Flint, Norma Orum, Joann Lambertson and Cleo Farris. Names of our team needing prayers for healing were lifted up: Norma Orum for health issues, Judy Porter who is under hospice care, Jackie Reams who was being treated at Rochester and has now been sent home, Ruth Tucker who is recovering from surgery at home, Donna Copper who still recovering from shoulder surgery, and Bev Kester who may be having back surgery in the future. Becky shared a story about her uncle and led us in prayer before we began the business meeting. The evaluations from the annual meeting were discussed briefly. Concerns mentioned were lack of space in general for all the activities, stairs to get to the dining room downstairs were difficult to use for many, and rooms for DOTE were small and other areas designated for groups were crowded together. The minutes of the annual meeting were read and approved as printed. Donna Flint is still searching for the list of attendees that signed in at the registration table. Kris Stewart gave the treasurer s report. Beginning balance on October 1, 2018 was $ Receipts during the month totaled $6, and disbursements were $5, leaving an ending balance on October 31, 2018 of $4, At the time of this report there were 64 active units. An active unit is one that pays a pledge amount or contributes any amount to the NE UMW District. The NE District pledge for 2018 was $62, Pledges paid to date total $44, leaving an unpaid balance of $17, Out of 64 active units, 58 have reported with pledges so far. Units that have not reported are Beaman, Earlville, Gladbrook Chapel, Grundy Center, LaPorte City, Manchester (they have dropped), Rudd and Shell Rock. It was noted that a LOVE gift was not requested nor collected at the annual meeting. Nor was an offering collected during the afternoon session. Kris emphasized during her report that we do have a larger balance than usual because expenses have been low. If the money is not spent, it will be returned to the conference. Board members were advised to submit vouchers for mileage and other expenses they may have such as paper and ink cartridges. Mileage used for shepherdess visits should be requested. Vouchers should be received by Kris before December 10. The shepherdess list was reviewed and changes made. Donna Flint will re-write the list with changes and send it to Ruth Tucker for publication in the LINK. Donna Copper showed samples of designs for pins to be worn by a shepherdess when she visits. Norma Orum, Nominations chair, reported that the Committee on Nominations (CON) had successfully filled 3 positions for 2019 terms: Pat Huxsol will serve on Nominations, Donna Copper will serve as Social Actions chair, and Cleo Farris will serve as Vice President. The committee still needs a replacement for Penney Morse whose term has expired. Barb Collins has volunteered to help Penney and to be trained for that office with the expectation of being elected next year. The nominations committee met several times this past summer, but did not request payment for mileage. Karen Page moved that members of the CON may submit vouchers for mileage when meeting to discuss nominations. The motion was seconded by Donna Flint. Motion carried. Donna Copper, out-going VP, reported on the annual meeting. She said the Janesville unit was great to work with and that the meeting went well. There were 75 in attendance.
