Ahoy: Members, Shipmates, Family Members and Friends, Reunion time is fast approaching and we just want to remind everyone...reservations need to be made quickly in order for you to assure your reservation. As a reminder, reunion dates are October 1-4. It is a difficult task to plan a party when you have no idea who will be coming, so please get your reservation in Now! If you did not receive the reunion packet or have lost it, please contact Donna Kraus at or her at krausdf@cox.net and she will provide you the information. WOW...the last few months have been extremely busy. With the passage of the Congressional Bill requesting the names of the Lost 74 be added to the wall; with the setting and dedication of Memorial Stones in several states; the many parades and Memorial Day events and the dedication of the new Navy Garden in the National Vietnam War Museum at Weatherford, Texas, our members have been extremely busy. We cannot remember a time when our Association s objective to have the names of the Lost 74 added to the Wall has received more press, whether it be through electronic media, newspapers, radio or television. We must keep the pressure on and keep this issue foremost in our government representative s field of vision. It is important for everyone to contact their U. S. Senators to request the same provision that was in House Bill 4435 be included in Senate Bill Make sure you make it clear you are asking their support urging the Secretary of Defense to put the names of the Lost 74 from the USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. On behalf of the entire Association we want to extend our thanks and appreciation to Del Francis, Loretta McKay and Terry Vjer for representing our Association at the 3 June 2014, Memorial Ceremony in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Many thanks to our Aussie friends CAPT Stevenson, Ron Baker, Trevor Davies, and all shipmates in Australia. And for always being there when we call, our hats are off too to Pete Peters, Mary Manley, Rich Burke, Dean Wyse, Bob Mason, Jeff Hotter, Glen Belec, John Coffey, Joe Sissel, Earl Marchbanks, Patriot Media, Paul Sherbo, Louise Esola, Ed Hopsopple, Tommy Anthony, Nick and Jennifer Nichols, Tim Wendler, the King family, Hannah Ackerman, Nolan Craig, Larry Webb and USS KIDD (DDG 100). We are truly in awe of and humbled by the people of Meansville, Georgia. A few of our stories and photos follow in the next pages. Please forgive if we missed anyone. As always, we wish you the very best. J. C. Campbell, Steve Kraus, Association President Association Vice President 1

MEMORIAL HEADSTONES AND DESCRIPTIONS As stated in the last newsletter over the next several issues, individual and group memorials would be featured. Mostly through the efforts of survivor Terry Vejr, 10 more headstones have been located: James R. Baker, Larry W. Cool, Dennis R. Johnston, Willie L. King, Douglas R. Meister, Earl F. Preston Jr., John A. Sauvey, Robert J. Searle, Gerald W. Smith, and Jon K. Stever. MEMORIAL DAY 2014 GRANBURY, TX - FIELD OF FLAGS - by J C Campbell The big Memorial Day program was followed by a parade on the square in Granbury. The main speaker was Gordon England, Former Secretary of the Navy. The American Legion and VFW had the honor of folding the flag with verbiage describing what each of the 13 folds represent. A wreath laying ceremony was comprised of the local JROTC posting colors, accompanied by a bag piper, and then a fly over by four Bonanza Aircraft from Pecan Plantation doing the "missing man" formation. THOMAS B. BOX City Cemetery, Athens, AL DEVERE R. GRISSOM LAWRENCE J. REILLY JR. RONALD A. THIBODEAU Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA ROBERT G. BRANDON Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress, CA Our banner with the Lost 74" generated talk and questions about USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754). Several brochures were handed out which was a tremendous help in explaining how the ship went down, and that the "Lost 74"'s names are not on the wall. There was an essay contest with 5th Grade students who described "What Memorial Day Means To Me." The winners were recognized by the Mayor of Granbury, and their names were listed on a plaque located in their respective schools. Thanks to everyone for your hard work, especially to Bob and Tony Mason for the banner, and Frank and Steve for the 3 fold brochure. I'm not sure who else, but thanks for all the work everyone has done. Everyone have a wonderful Memorial Holiday, and remember those who made it possible! 2

MISHAWAKA, IN - MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - by Bob Mason - Just before Memorial Day, Bob and Dixie Mason, Glenn and Sue Belec, and Jeff hotter and his fiancee spoke to Indiana Representative Jackie Walorski. They shared our story of working to get the Lost 74" names placed on the Vietnam Memorial wall. Jackie took a brochure with our information and history. She was immediately on task. Bob received a call from the U.S. State House informing him about their interest and willingness to work with us. About the same time, an article was printed about USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754) and our mission to have the names placed on the wall. Granbury, Texas On Memorial Day, while driving the parade route Bob Mason saw a lady holding up a picture of a young sailor. It was one of our 74, Joe Luis Gonzalez. Her name is Frances Hastings. She had seen the newspaper article and brought her family to the parade. They moved to Mishawaka from Clovis, New Mexico. Frances met with EVANS group and said, I didn't know anyone cared! Wow! Bob will be meeting with her to share what the association has been doing along with pictures. She wants to attend a reunion and meet everyone. It made for a totally great day. Who would have thought? The large banner with the names and pictures really did make a difference! Fast forward to 2 Jun This morning a crew showed up for the news coverage of our on going efforts to get the names on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. You can go to to view the story. It aired 3 Jun at 0530 and 1700 during the evening news. Bob hopes he and his fellow shipmates made the Association proud and was a little helpful in getting the story out to the community for added support. The message was for everyone to call their Senator and ask for support of Senate bill S2294. Frances Hastings was also interviewed off-camera. She does not like her picture taken. Mishawaka, Indiana RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA - by Pete Peters - Green Hills Memorial Park hosted one of Southern California s largest annual Memorial Day services. Sgt. Daniel Rodriguez, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart was the Keynote speaker. Other highlights included the release of 100 doves, a performance by the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, the 21st Century skydiving team, flyovers, and a hometown heroes ceremony. 3

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA by Del Francis Survivors Del Francis and Terry Vejr, accompanied by Loretta McKay, journeyed to Australia to attend Memorial Services honoring th the 45 anniversary of the collision on 3 Jun 1969, between USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754) and HMAS MELBOURNE R 21. The ceremony took place at the Australian National Maritime Museum where a plaque commemorating the event was dedicated and affixed to the entrance wall. Steve Kraus & Pete Peters Rancho Palos Verdes, CA...Loretta and I boarded the plane in Dallas after a short delay when apparently someone else had the same passport number as Loretta. The flight down under took 22 hours with a short stop in Brisbane for fuel. We left Dallas Wednesday May 25th and arrived in Sydney on Friday... haven t found Thursday yet. Phil Whitten (RAN) met us at the airport. He drives a tourist coach and gave us a mini tour of Sydney, a beautiful city of 5.5 million. Ron Baker arrived at the hotel the same time. We walked to the train to meet his daughter Tiffany, then onto a walking tour which included St. Mary s Cathedral and the ANZAC Memorial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They have a custom of placing names of lost friends on stars and throwing them into the tomb. The stars are collected and burned. School children scatter the ashes where service men have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Ron and I both took part. The reunion/memorial was organized by Rear Admiral Tony Horton, who invited us to dinner along with Ron Baker and his daughter. Admiral Horton picked us up at our hotel and drove us to their home in Northern Sydney. Mrs. Horton served a wonderful meal of roast lamb, green beans and creamed rice Australia (I think); it was delicious, followed by chocolate mousse. Sunday morning there was a service at the Garden Island Navy Yard Chapel, a beautiful historic building, the oldest chapel in the RAN. Principal Chaplain (Dr) Gareth Clayton OAM RAN (Rtd) officiated. Loretta McKay read the lessons after the U.S. Navy declined. After the service we toured the Captain Cook Dock and HMAS NEWCASTLE FFG 06. Terry Vejr arrived in time for the chapel service after gallivanting around the globe. (We will let him tell that story.) Phil managed to get a bus and took the group to Harley Davidson to get t-shirts for Loretta s son-inlaw. We toured Sydney including Bondi Beach where we stopped for a beer. Terry was exhausted and went back to the hotel. We went on to the Golden Dragon for Chinese food. Monday we cruised Sydney harbor. Captain Stevenson was piped aboard by Cec Young and Phil Whitten. The Captain was brought to tears. Captain Steve has a new lady friend who has done wonders for him. He was very active and certainly alert. Jan is a lovely lady. The Captain had Jan bring me his binoculars to hold for the day. A good time was had by all. 3 JUNE -...at the Australian National Maritime Museum. Welcoming speeches followed by Dedication of a Plaque for the 74. A permanent display,it is the only U.S. ship in the National Museum. Memorabilia of HMAS MELBOURNE and FRANK E EVANS were on display and there was a video presentation in the USA Gallery. HMAS VAMPIRE, which was involved in Exercise Sea Spirit was available for tour. 4

Ron Baker presented Admiral Horton a Texas state flag which flew over the Capitol Building for his tremendous e f f o r t s i n o r g a n i z i n g t h e reunion/memorial. After his remarks, Admiral Horton asked me to address the crowd, to which I managed a hearty Thank You! Wednesday June 4, Admiral and Margaret Horton took Terry, Loretta and me to the Blue Mountains. We had a wonderful outing but not one kangaroo! Australian Navy Fleet Commander, Del Francis, CAPT Stevenson, Terry Vejr, and RADM Tony Horton SOUTH CHINA SEA - 3 Jun USS KIDD (DDG 100) Today marks the anniversary of a tragic event in our Navy s history the sinking of USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754). In order to commemorate the event KIDD crew members and Midshipmen read passages from Unsinkable Sailors The Fall and Rise of the Last Crew of USS FRANK E. EVANS and struck a bell for each of the 74 sailors who perished that fateful night over the 1MC. The KIDD crew shares a special Friendship Alliance with the surviving members of the FRANK E. EVANS and is proud to carry on their heritage. Please take a moment to remember those sailors whose lives were lost due to this tragic event. Our sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to the crew of USS KIDD. I can't think of a better tribute to our "Lost 74" then to have a memorial ceremony on a U.S. Navy ship in the South China Sea on 3 June. Bravo Zulu USS KIDD, you continue to win the hearts of all America. God bless America and God Bless USS KIDD. Steve Kraus We bow our heads in remembrance of those we lost that day and for the families whom miss them. God bless. Bernice Varella The Lost 74" - For Whom the Bell Tolls LONG BEACH, CA - by Pete Peters - A memorial service was held Tuesday on the 45th anniversary of the deadly collision between USS FRANK E. EVANS and the Australian carrier HMAS MELBOURNE on the South China Sea. More than 50 survivors and their loved ones gathered at the Long Beach Naval Memorial to remember when EVANS, based out of Long Beach, made an incorrect turn during a training exercise, causing MELBOURNE to cut through her. I think this camaraderie just helps everybody deal with that loss they had 45 years ago, said Tim Wendler, a Pasadena resident who lost his father, Richard Thibodeau, in the collision. Tuesday s service was the 10th annual gathering in Long Beach to remember the 74 dead. The event included a color presentation by the Hawthorne High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, a laying of the wreath donated by the HMAS Melbourne Association, a bell ceremony and a reading of the names of those who died. Trevor Davies, a boiler fitter aboard MELBOURNE during the collision, traveled from New South Wales, Australia, to attend the memorial for the first time. Davies recalled the ships being filled with young lads during the horrifying accident in the middle of the night. Many of the survivors have 5

Ron Stephens, Duane Conely, Pete Peters, Rich Burke, Dean Wyse, Steve Kraus kept in contact with MELBOURNE crewmen over the years. No matter what battle you re in, survivors survive the test of t i m e. I t s a n e t e r n a l brotherhood, he said. Roy Pete Peters, who was standing messenger mid-watch during the fatal accident, thanked those aboard MELBOURNE, which turned around to rescue and treat the survivors. If it hadn t been for the Australians, there would ve been a lot more than the 74, Peters said. The Frank E. Evans Association has worked to get the names of the 74 sailors on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in the nation s capital. EVANS was about 110 nautical miles outside the official combat zone when the crewmen died, and their names have been absent from the wall since its dedication in 1982, despite the ship s previous war support efforts. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, has pushed for the 74 Lost" to be placed on the war memorial, and he recently met with the DOD s Chuck Hagel about the cause. Just before Memorial Day this year, the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the defense authorization bill, calling on the DOD to add the names to the Wall. LONG BEACH, CA - 74, is a number that haunted Tom Manley until the day he died, one that brings his widow to tears whenever she recalls the prophecy her husband echoed before his heart finally broke. M a n l e y, a y e a r - o l d boilerman 3rd class when HMAS MELBOURNE collided with the N a v y d e s t r o y e r, survived and lived another 40 years. Before he died, he told me the names wouldn t be on the wall in his lifetime, said Long Beach native Mary Manley, his widow, choking back tears. I thought he was nuts. I really did. A lifelong Long Beach resident, Manley, 66, speaks softly and gives way to tears when thinking about the 74 names missing from the wall. But Manley also shared a sense of humor with her husband that still lives on. The Evans 74, over Thomas Manley s objections while still alive, is memorialized on his widow s arm. I told him I wanted to get a tattoo of a heart red, white and blue, Mary Manley said. He said over my dead body will you ever have a tattoo. He died in February. On my birthday, April 3, that year, I got my tattoo. MEANSVILLE, GA - by John Coffey - This day, 3 June 2014, was the 45th anniversary of the collision between my ship, USS FRANK E EVANS (DD 754) and the Australian aircraft carrier, HMAS 6

Melbourne R-21, which took the lives of 74 young men. It is also the day the ship s association placed a memorial to Georgia native, Willie Lee King, BMC, USN, in his hometown of Meansville, a small town in South Central Georgia. Here are a few highlights of the dedication. The ceremony took place in Meansville Memorial Park which was designed and built by four Eagle Scouts. A Boy Scout sold his deer rifle to raise the money to have the flag pole placed in the park. American Legion Post 197 Commander Billy Payton opened the ceremonies. In attendance were Robert Hukabee who served in Vietnam with Col Hal Moore in the Ia Drang Valley, now Sergeant At Arms with the American Legion; and Mr. Rufus Durrah, a 103 year old Army Veteran of WWII who was a cook in the European and Pacific Theaters. The King family, many generations, was well represented including Ophelia, Shorty s wife. USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754) was well represented by CSC (Ret) Earl Marchbanks just two weeks after back surgery, Survivor Joe Sissel, and John Coffey. Willie would have been proud! 7

Our family was humbled and proud of the overwhelming show of pride and love for our loved one. Our thanks to the USS Frank E. Evans (DD754) Association, The American Legion Pike Post 197, Mayor Gayle Burden, The Pike County Journal, Pike County community, Commander Payton, Messrs. Roy Hughley, John Coffey, Huckaby Sr. (Seargent Of Arms), all family and friends who attended or sent words of support. Pike county will always be near and dear to our family, never forgetting our humble beginnings and thanking God for a place filled with love, honor and respect for our veterans. Thank you all. Sincerely, Mrs. Willie Lee King (Ophelia) Children: Sonya N. King, Karen Y. King McCoy, Kelvin D. King And the entire King Family. MILITARY AUTHOR RADIO - 3 Jun :00 PM CST, USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754) Memorial Program, GUEST HOST: PAUL SHERBO, Author Unsinkable Sailors: The fall and rise of the last crew of USS Frank E. Evans th Paul Sherbo joined the program as Guest Host to commemorate the 45 anniversary of the 3 Jun 1969, sinking of the American destroyer USS FRANK E. EVANS( DD754), which was struck by the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS MELBOURNE. Operating as part of a combined force with the Royal Australian Navy and other allied naval ships, EVANS executed a starboard turn into the path of MELBOURNE at 0315 a.m. on June 3, 1969 and was cut in half by the heavier and larger war ship. EVANS broken off bow section sank almost immediately taking 73 unfortunate crew members with her. Only one body was recovered in the aftermath of the collision, bringing the total lost to 74. Out of the 273 crew members on board, 199 survived. The stern section, although severely damaged, remained afloat. The courage and heroic spirit of both ships' crews add a genuine admiration for their bravery despite their confusion in the sudden turn of events. Paul interviewed survivor Steve Kraus, now VP of the USS Frank E. (DD754) Association, Ed Holsopple and Nolan Craig former EVANS crew members, and author/actor Hannah Ackerman who all provided updates on the Association s activities and efforts to have the Lost 74" names added to the Vietnam Memorial Wall. 7 JUNE MINERAL WELLS, TX The National Vietnam War Museum- On Saturday, 7 Jun 2014, The National Vietnam War Museum held its 5th annual update to the replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall. Since its dedication in 2009, this half scale replica of the Wall in Washington has been updated to keep pace with the changes to the original. By Del Francis - Loretta and I attended the dedication of a memorial stone to Texan RD3 Con Wesley Warnock, and a monument dedicated to our Lost 74. JC and Sylvia Campbell, Nick, Billie and Jennifer Nichols, Tommy and Leslie Anthony were present. The site for the National Vietnam War Museum used to be the training ground for most of the Helo pilots who served in Vietnam. There is a wonderful display of war artifacts including a 300 foot long, ½ half scale replica of the Wall. This year four names were added to the Wall. Next year, there will be at least 74! Five gardens are dedicated to each service branch with three having been completed. The NAVY garden is being established with a monument dedicated to our Lost 74," which will be installed later. Monica Lil Sis Harvey sang our National Anthem and Welcome Home. Jim Vines, Commander AMVETS post 133 introduced the guest speaker Army CAPT Sarah Blum USA ret. Sarah ended up a nurse after the Air Force and Navy turned her down because she was too short. At 73 she is still a practicing nurse psychotherapist. 8

In 1967, in Vietnam she was forced into trying to save the hand of a 19 year old private. That private was Jim Vines, the man who introduced her. Sarah stands mighty tall in the eyes of all the Vietnam Vets I know. She wrote a book, Women Under Fire. Other speakers were COL Mant Hawkins USMC, and CAPT Gilbert J. Miller, USN commanding officer Naval Air Station Fort Worth. The bagpiper played a special song for USS FRANK E. EVANS. As the song of each service was played the appropriate flag was hoisted. As Anchors Aweigh sounded, the Navy flag was raised...tommy Anthony and I unveiled the memorial stone of Texas born RD3 Con Wesley Warnock. This was a great tribute and USS FRANK E. EVANS (DSD 754) figured prominently. I suspect JC did a little arm twisting. Thank you JC from a grateful crew. 17 JUNE MILITARY AUTHOR RADIO - Guest: Louise Esola,a journalist and author is aiming to release in August a self-published book titled American Boys: The true story of the Lost 74 of the Vietnam War. She says the government tried to quickly pull the collision from the Vietnam narrative. Esola says a first draft press release had EVANS sinking 200 miles off Vietnam on 3 May 1969 the date was later corrected. Later press releases put the collision 650 miles off the coast of Manila, which was true, but it was not the closest land, which was Vietnam. Some higher authority said get this away from Vietnam, Esola said. Still, media from across the country immediately published reports of the collision. Esola says the only reason EVANS left Long Beach was to participate in the Vietnam War, and the surviving members and their families will fight along with relatives of the dead until they are honored on the memorial wall. This book is not about a ship that sank, she said. It s about a war that sank and took a ship with it. American Boys: The True Story of the Lost 74 of the Vietnam War, August 2014, read it! 24 JUNE by Ed Holsopple and Del Francis - Seventy-four is the number that will always haunt Ed Holsopple. That number means 74 lives lost and 74 men who paid the ultimate price for their country. It means 74 souls who will never be forgotten. Seventy-four sailors died while aboard USS FRANK E. EVANS (DD 754) on 3 Jun 1969, after the warship was sliced in half following a collision with a larger, Australian Naval ship during a training exercise in the South China Sea. The incident occurred in the thick of the Vietnam War, but the names of those 74 were never inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Holsopple and a group of others in the USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) Association hope to change that. We feel it s the honor they deserve and earned, Holsopple, of Johnstown, said. We promised those 74 young men we would never forget them and that s the premise for our efforts today. Because the incident occurred outside the Vietnam War combat zone, the names were never inscribed on the memorial Wall, but the Association is pouring its resources into convincing congressional leaders to put pressure on the Department of Defense to make an exception. Exceptions have been made in the past and names have been added to the memorial following DOD approval. Since the wall was dedicated in 1982, nine groups of names were added to the list of nearly 60,000 who paid the ultimate price. Holsopple, who served on the ship from as a gunfire control technician, wants the Lost 74 of the EVANS to be the tenth addition. Several resolutions have been submitted since the wall was erected and have been repeatedly denied by the DOD. In addition to Patrick Corcoran, from Philadelphia, four other men from Pennsylvania were killed and lost at sea when the ship partially sunk in a staggering three minutes. They were: Victor Thomas Rikal, Butler; Donald Eugene Gearhart, Lewistown; Stephen Donald Fagan, Huntingdon; and Raymond Joseph Earley, Mahony City. Another 199 sailors aboard EVANS survived. 9

Holsopple said he s working closely with the office of Bill Shuster, R-9th district, who serves on the House Armed Forces Committee. Gretchen Gailey, a spokeswoman in Shuster's office, said it s looking into the information sent by the association. th June 24 found Dell Francis, our roving reporter and intrepid scribe in Johnstown, PA for the dedication of the Pennsylvania memorial stone to Vic Rikal, Patrick Corcoran, Raymond Earley, Stephen Fagan, and Donald Gearhart. Some were present and in support of the event including Ed Holsopple, organizer and main speaker, Barbara and Vic Jr. Rikal, Tom Vargo, Loretta McKay, Lora Prentiss and mother, and John Coffey.
