In everything we do and are, we strive to be God's good news to a world in need. We hope that you will take time to browse our Web Site; and if you are in our area, please come visit us. 2 FROM THE DESK OF Kennedy M. McGowan SPEAKING IN THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE May 20th, we did something very cool. We heard the story of Pentecost in 11 different languages! Members of our church family each took a verse and shared it in languages that ranged from Spanish to Urdu, while we follow along in English on the screen above. Doing so reminded us how on the first Pentecost Sunday, God spoke to each person there in the languages they had learned at their mother s knee, the language that had first spoken love into their life. The church has always been more faithful to God s call when we have followed the Spirit s lead and spoken in ways that reach people where they are. That has meant missionaries not only learning new languages, but new ways of living and thinking as they traveled the world to share the Good News of God s love. For the missionary pioneers of Wycliffe Bible Translators, it has meant living for decades in remote villages so that every tribe and tongue has the Bible in their own heart language. But it has also meant reaching people in other ways. Twenty-first century churches have adapted new styles of music and new designs for church buildings to reach folks far from God. In our ministry to our preschool, we use high energy, child-friendly music to reach these kids with God s love. But beyond the languages we hear, Christians have used visual languages, too. Christians created stained glass windows (such as those gracing our sanctuary) so that people who could not read could learn the stories of the Bible. Today, Christians have done the same by creating mass market movies, or simply using videos in their worship and on their websites. Today we are doing the same as we add our first video to our website. In the future, we hope to video the story of every person who joins the church. That way we can speak to our neighbors in this powerful visual language. In a more concrete way, we will be doing that, too, with an exciting new flag ministry. Our elders got the idea when we saw the Scottish flags Bart and Alice Carlisle put up on our church sign to advertise the Kirkin O The Tartans. So we thought: how could we communicate God s love all the year round with such flags? And we came up with a plan to put different types of flags to mark different occasions of significance in the life of our community. We are inaugurating this plan with a flag of special significance to a group of folks in South Florida who has often felt rejected by the church: the gay and lesbian community. In doing so, we want to communicate to this community a powerful message that here at First Presbyterian we believe God welcomes everyone. And, as next month is officially Gay Pride Month to signify the beginning of the Gay Civil Rights movement, in June we will fly the Rainbow Flag along with the American flag. Interestingly the idea of a rainbow flag has its origins in the Protestant Reformation, as the radical reformer Thomas Muntzer used it to signify the new thing God was doing in those days. In the future, we will add flags with our church and learning center logos, and we want your ideas, too. Let us know of flags that we could put up to celebrate and reach other groups in our community. We want to use whatever languages God gives us to share the transforming power of God s love with everyone in Hollywood and beyond! 2
