Lovin, Jr. Kevin Witherell Jordy Barnette Joshua F. Cameron Mike Beck Bryan Green Roy Lovin Sr., Roy Lovin Jr., Jordy Barnette, David Cornell, Jlon Frecka Camp Website: Compatriots and Friends, Jordy and I returned home from the 2018 Tennessee Division Reunion on Sunday, April 22. To say we had a good time would DEFINITELY be an understatement! We left from the Longstreet Museum Friday morning around 9am and went straight to SCV HQ s hoping to visit with Executive Director Michael Landree, but he had left the day before on a trip to Pennsylvania. After a short visit with the girl working the store, we headed back east for the 30 minute ride to Henry Horton State Park where we rested before going to the boyhood home of Brig. General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The site held the Friday night social before officially starting the reunion on Saturday. I got the surprise of being sworn into the SCV Mechanized Cavalry before about a 100 or so friends. Saturday morning, two of your camp members forwarded the Colors in the opening ceremony of the reunion. SCV business was conducted and shortly after 1pm, we finished up and ate lunch. That night was the awards ceremony where I (LOLOLOL) won best newsletter for camps over 50 members, I corrected Frank Heathman, Division 2nd Lt. on the error and made sure that Joshua Cameron received the accolades for his work. After all this, Jordy goes back to the room and rests, I go find my middle Tennessee friends and hang out with them till we re all tired and sleepy. It was a great reunion with lots of business taken care of and spending time with fellow Compatriots from across the state! Lt. Commander Kevin Witherell WAR MEANS FIGHTING, AND FIGHTING MEANS KILLING. PAGE 2

4 Commander Lovin Addresses Issues at Bethesda Cemetery Everyone, I have heard back from the board at Bethesda and I waited on more answers, but this has nothing to do with our Camp/SCV and we are in good graces for now. That being said, Please do not share or post/ comment anything pertaining to the issue at Bethesda. This has turned into a serious situation for the ones involved. Everything about the issue on Facebook is being watched and our Camp and members should not say or post anything. If you have any questions, please ask. Thank you all! Commander Roy S. Lovin, Jr. After Action Report: Private Eidson Marker Dedication About a month or so ago, I received a phone call from the Vaughn s Brigade Commander, Billie Joe Holley regarding a headstone dedication. A family in Texas wanted to place a headstone on their Confederate ancestor, Private Wellington J. Eidson, Company K, 29th Tennessee Infantry. When looking for a SCV camp close by the Cemetery the family contacted Mr. Greg Ware, Commander, Scott County Clinch Mountain Rangers #1858, in Gate City, VA. The family told Commander Ware want they wanted to do; Commander Ware then contacted Commander Vaughn, and then I got the phone call. Within a month s time, The Linton family, and I, phoned and ed each other to prepare for the dedication. The date of April 21, 2018 was set for the event at the Shanks Cemetery in Surgoinsville, Hawkins County, TN at 11 AM. As with every event the Color Guard is involved with, Devine Intervention is requested for pleasant weather and the request was answered. God sent the soft sweet Texas wind to Tennessee for the dedication. Along with the soft breeze, a cloudless blue sky was provided by Him and temperature in the 60 s. Arriving about 9:45-10 AM, I started to study the cemetery and planed the placement of the flag stands and podium when the family arrived. We exchanged our greetings and went right to work on the dedication. No event would be complete without last minute changes, including this one. At 11 AM sharpish The Color Guard was called to attention. We marched to the flag stands, posting the Colors. Reverend Jamie Eidson, great great grandson of Private Eidson rendered the Invocation and welcomed everyone to the dedication. Commander Ware led everyone in the Pledges and Salutes to the Flags. 1st Sergeant George Linton, Texas Lone Star Color Guard read the SCV Charge and sounded the Confederate Soldiers Roll Call. Miss Esther Eidson Linton great great granddaughter of Private Eidson, read his biography. Then the family gathered to unveil the headstone. The Ladies of the Sam Davis Chapter #410, from Morristown, TN, conducted the UDC grave marker dedication followed by the placing of flowers at the grave. A rifle salute was given and Taps were sounded by the Bugler. Reverend Eidson gave the Benediction which was followed by a hearty rendition of DIXIE by all. The Color Guard marched to the Flags and retired the Colors concluding the service. The Color Guard continued its tradition of calling out our ancestor s name after the Colors were retired, and by thanking those participating in the Color Guard: Jason Bellamy, Patrick Watson, George Ware of Scott County Clinch Mountain Rangers Camp #1858; Frank Smith and George Linton of Upshur County Patriots Camp #2109, and I of the Bradford/Rose Camp #1638. God Bless the South and those who offered their lives in maintenance of its Principles. Deo Vindice. Bryan R. Green, Color Sergeant, Tennessee Division, SCV Color Guard PAGE 4

8 NEWS FROM THE FRONT: VAUGHN S BRIGADE Gen. Morgan Camp to host Michael Hardy Join Compatriots from the Morgan Camp as they welcome Michael Hardy to their May 8, 2018 meeting at Casa Guerrero at 6:30 pm. NEWS FROM THE FRONT: TN DIVISION Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery now in SCV Control In August 2017, the city of Chattanooga announced that they wanted to divest themselves as the Trustees of the Confederate Cemetery in Chattanooga. Immediately the local Camp, Tennessee Division and SCV National started working with the City of Chattanooga to become the Trustees. This past Monday, April 9th the City of Chattanooga and the SCV appeared before a Chancery Court judge in Hamilton County and the newly formed Veterans Cemetery Trust was given control of the cemetery. This newly formed Trust is comprised of all SCV members, with the three Trustees being from the local Chattanooga Camp, the Tennessee Division Commander and SCV National properties manager. It has taken 8 months of going through the legal process, but the SCV now controls the Chattanooga Confederate cemetery! I would like to especially thank Scott Hall from the Knoxville Camp for all of the legal work that he has done to make this happen. Endeavor to Persevere! I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant, James G. Patterson, Commander Tennessee Division Sons of Confederate Veterans PAGE 8

12 Private William R. Clark First Confederate soldier to die for the Cause by Bryan Green Very little is known about Private Clark, however, research illustrates that he was about years old and a Baltimore City firefighter just before enlisting in the Confederate army just days before the Baltimore riots in April Research also states that Private Clark had not mustered in to a unit before he was killed. As every schoolboy and schoolgirl knows, several Yankee regiments were in route to Washington, DC answering the call for volunteers from the President on that fateful day. On April 19, 1861, Union troops including the 6 th Massachusetts Infantry were being transported to Baltimore by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad which terminated at the President Street Station. There were no connecting or direct railroads to allow travel from Pennsylvania and the north to Washington, DC and the South. In order to continue onto Washington, the troops had to march down Pratt Street to the Camden Station of the B&O Railroad about one mile. During the trip to Baltimore, the order was given to lock and load. Like the day before, the Union troops were met with hostility by the citizens of Baltimore along Pratt Street. The crowd grew larger and more hostile than the day before. Bricks, stones, bottles and other small objects were hurled at 6 th Massachusetts. A shot was fired from somewhere and the troops returned fire into the crowd that contained unarmed people. When the smoke cleared and the 6 th Massachusetts was loaded onto the train at the Camden Station; 12 Marylanders including William Clark lay dead in the street. The final resting place for Private William Pratt, CSA is unknown. A member of the Maryland Division, SCV, and his dear mother erected a monument honoring Private Williams at Confederate Hill in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD. I believe it done around God Bless the South and those who offered their lives in maintenance of its Principles. Deo Vindice. PAGE 12

13 A Letter to the Southern Baptist Convention from Gene Andrews (courtesy of Dear S.B.C., When I went to your website to find your mailing address, I noticed that a topic of discussion from a recent convention was the concern over the decrease in membership. May a lowly rank and file member offer a suggestion? No one wants to be a member of any organization run by a bunch of suck up, ass kissing, politically correct cowards. Your vulgar attack against our honored Confederate Battle Flag was disgusting. It was nothing more than a pathetic display of pandering to the criminal element of our society. I promise you most assuredly that you have lost one worker from Crievewood Baptist Church in Nashville. I will never donate another dime to you effeminate whiners, nor will I ever again waste my time cleaning up after programs, working the neighborhood picnic, or servicing the grounds. Ask the loudmouth, vulgar thugs from Black Lives Don t Matter to Other Blacks to cough up the tithe money for your salary so that you can spend time insulting Southerners who had ancestors fight under St. Andrew s Cross against a brutal, sadistic enemy who used churches in the South to stable their horses and the pews for feed troughs. Ask George Soros to work at the church since you wimps are more concerned about Marxist liberal perverts than you are about Southern Baptists. My ancestors fought and some died under the Confederate Battle Flag. Those men never did anything to make me ashamed of them. Nor would I do anything that would make those Confederate patriots ashamed of me, like consorting with South-hating cowards. I suggest that you read about real Southern religious leaders such as Father Abram Joseph Ryan, Rev. Robert L. Dabney, and Rev. D.C. Kelley. They were Christian soldiers on and off the battlefield. They were also men, something you never will be. Former Southern Baptist, Gene Andrews Gene Andrews, former Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (Tennessee Division), served as a combat officer with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. Back in the states, he played football and ran track for the Marine Corps and was invited to the tryout camp with the Cincinnati Bengals. Gene coached football and track in high school where he also taught history during a time when they allowed factual history in schools. Gene is now retired and works as the caretaker of the Nathan Bedford Forrest home near Chapel Hill, Tennessee. PAGE 13

14 Historic Tennessee Places to visit that played a part in the War for Southern Independence Information from tnvacation.com Belle Meade Plantation Location: 5025 Memphis-Bristol Highway Nashville, TN Phone: (615) Once one of the largest private estates in Nashville encompassing 5,400 acres and home to five generations of the Harding-Jackson family, Belle Meade Plantation today is a 30-acre historic site 6 miles west of Nashville. Before the Civil War, Belle Meade flourished; today bullets from the Battle of Nashville scar the house. Known as "Queen of the Tennessee Plantations," Belle Meade was widely known for its horses. Owner John Harding, who expanded the home from its original log cabin, loved horse racing and bred horses to win. He was also a supporter of the Nashville Female Academy. His son Gen. William Giles Harding became expert in the breeding of Thoroughbreds. He was the first man in Tennessee to use the auction system for selling Thoroughbreds and won more purses than any man in America. Belle Meade had a large population of slaves, many of whom developed specialized skills as tradesmen, while others became jockeys, trainers, and groomsmen. Best known among them was Robert Green, head groomer, much sought after for his knowledge of horses. After the Civil War, he stayed on as a valued--and the highest paid--employee. During the Battle of Nashville, Belle Meade's front yard was the site of skirmishes, and the mansion was riddled with bullet holes. It served as headquarters for Confederate Gen. Chalmers. Visitors to the mansion through the years included Andrew Jackson, President and Mrs. Grover Cleveland, Robert Todd Lincoln, General U.S. Grant, General William T. Sherman, General Winfield Scott Hancock, and Adlai E. Stevenson. Experience frontier life of 1819 through living history demonstrations at the Harding Cabin. Demonstrations available every Friday and Saturday April through October. Guided tour of the 1853 Greek Revival mansion available year round. Belle Meade Plantation also produces hams and honey. The restaurant, Martha's at the Plantation, open from 11 am to 2 pm daily, sets the standard for locally raised seasonal food with a network of farmers and organic suppliers. The Harding Garden, Martha's on-site urban farm organically supplies the restaurant with heirloom tomatoes, purple okra, sweet corn, rainbow chard, herbs, peppers and more. Martha's: PAGE 14

16 CONFEDERATE PROFILES Leonidas Polk Affiliation: Confederacy Unit: Dept. of TN, AL, & LA Rank: General West Point classmate, encouraged Polk to accept a commission in the Confederate army, and Polk eventually agreed. He was commissioned major general on June 25, In the early months of the conflict, he commanded the vast territory of Department No. 2, which included the Mississippi River defenses from the Red River to Paducah, Kentucky. He also organized the Army of the Mississippi, later a part of the Army of Tennessee. Polk commanded the Confederate right at Shiloh, leading four charges personally. At Perryville, he was second-in-command to General Braxton Bragg, who criticized him for not attacking the Union forces when ordered. Polk commanded the right flank at the battle of Stones River, and his corps took the pivotal Round Forest twice before Bragg's army withdrew. At Chickamauga Bragg relieved Polk of command and ordered him court-martialed for disobeying orders. After careful investigation, Jefferson Davis dismissed the charges. Episcopal bishop and Confederate General Leonidas Polk was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, April 10, He briefly attended the University of North Carolina before entering the U.S. Military Academy. He became an Episcopalian during his senior year and resigned his commission six months after graduation to enter the ministry. He was ordained a deacon in Polk took command of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana in December 1863 with headquarters in Meridian, Mississippi. General Joseph E. Johnston, who replaced Bragg following the battle of Chickamauga, ordered Polk's forces to assist him in the Atlanta campaign. While examining the Federal position in company with Generals Johnston and Hardee, Polk was instantly killed by a shot to the chest at Pine Mountain near Marietta, Georgia, on June 14, Polk married Frances Ann Devereux in May 1830 and immediately was posted as assistant to Bishop Richard Channing Moore of Monumental Church of Richmond. In 1832, he moved his family to Tennessee, where he received a portion of the Polk lands near Mount Pleasant and built a home called "Ashwood." 17 THE EDITOR S THOUGHTS Compatriots, Friends, I hope that this newsletter finds you in good spirits! What a strange and wild April this has been weather wise. If it ain t 80 on Thursday and snowing Friday afternoon, it apparently ain t East Tennessee weather. April did bring us some good news that the SCV has taken over the stewardship of the Chattanooga cemetery and the legislature also voted to withhold money from Memphis as punishment for their actions. I am glad they took at least some action! On another note, I have been a bit dismayed at some things I have noticed lately. We all know that if you do not learn from history, you will repeat it. If we do not study history and pass a true representation to our children they will be lied to. We have all witnessed this first hand with our Confederate history and heritage. I got to witness it on a couple other fronts over the past couple weeks though. One was with this whole flat earth non-sense making the rounds. I was astonished at the amount of students in one of my classes who actually thought the earth was flat and they pointed me to several YouTube videos as evidence that we had been lied to. I was dumbfounded. I thought that was the limit of the ignorance, but then there was a debate amongst some of the same students on the legitimacy of the Holocaust! Once again YouTube was the vehicle of truth here as I was shown a video with evidence that suggested the numbers of deaths were inflated to make Hitler look bad and the death camps were just work camps were people unfortunately died. I was told that only those Jews who were gassed count toward the Holocaust. I asked what about the blacks, homosexuals, sick, elderly, and Jews that were just murdered by other means. Those I were told were just collateral damage. Once again I was dumbfounded. I really don t know if there is hope for a better tomorrow when ignorance like this abounds and is accepted. Misinformation and ignorance are the tool of the enemy and it is not limited to our Confederate history and heritage! Your Servant to the Cause, Joshua F. Cameron Deo Vindice Editor JOSHUA F.
