Bradford/Rose Headquarters Camp Website: Camp Facebook: Camp Youtube: Vaughn s Brigade Website: I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather and sun. As I am writing this I am reminded of the things going on in the world today and how our ancestors must have felt with what they had to deal with. We have not had to deal with someone coming into our town and take over the way they had to deal with. We have not had to deal with sending our brothers, husbands, and fathers all away to leave our wives and daughters to take care of the home place. Do not get me wrong, if you have someone in the military today you may experience some of these things but the majority of us have not experienced this. Our ancestors fought to keep what is happening today from happening but evidently the people of the northern side did not learn from THEIR mistake. We the people of the south must stand strong and carry on the pride and honor that our ancestors carried and stand up for them and everything they stood for. Lastly I would like for everyone to please keep the Perkey family in your thoughts and prayers. Ray was a very good southern gentleman and loved his southern heritage and his SVC/UDC family. I will always remember Ray for his sense of humor and his love for his family and friends. Rest In Peace compatriot Ray Perkey you will be missed by all. Sincerely, Roy S. 5 BRADFORD/ROSE HEADQUARTERS Lt. Commander Kevin Witherell Fellow Compatriots and friends, This is in memory of our SCV Compatriot and friend 'Charles Ray Perkey', may he Rest in Peace. Please remember the good times we all had during his short time as a member of the Bradford/Rose Camp. Phyllis told me he was so "looking forward to going to eat at the IHOP after the meeting". We called it the "meeting after the meeting"...usually anywhere from 4 to 8 camp members might be feeling a little hungry after the camp meeting and we would go to the IHOP and try to "solve the world's problems. Please keep Phyllis, Tara and Telia in your prayers as they try to cope with his loss. I hope everyone will have a chance to participate in the camp yard sale (July 1) at the Longstreet Museum. With all the bad in the world we must take time to cherish the good! We as the SCV, more then ever, need to come together and fight. It must start from the camp level up. Bradford/Rose, we are the future of our heritage! Bring your stuff to sell, make a $20 donation to the museum an you keep the rest of your money. Anything you do not sell must be removed from the property at the end of the sale day. Also, after the yard sale, at 6pm we will have our rescheduled (due to Ray Perkey's funeral service) "June meeting" at the Longstreet Museum. Weather permitting we could meet outside as we have done in the past. Bring a folding chair. Our regular July meeting will be held at the Grainger County Tomato Festival during the last full weekend of July. (there are 5 Saturdays in July this year). The Charlie Daniels Band is scheduled to perform this year at the festival. Strong possibility that I may be attending the SCV National Reunion this year (if only for one day) in Memphis, TN with Tim Massey and Caroline Blanks. Caroline will be speaking to the OCR. Roy and I have kinda thrown around the idea of moving our camp picnic to later in the year...late Sept/ Oct in the hopes of cooler weather. Last year was so muggy/humid/hot that it was hard to enjoy. What DO YOU THINK? OUR HERITAGE IS STILL UNDER ASSAULT, KEEP OUR SCV NATIONAL LEADERS IN YOUR PRAYERS. DEO VINDICE Kevin God bless, Jordy Barnette 2nd Lt. Commander Jordy Barnette jbarnette1994@gmail.com. IT IS GOOD THAT WAR IS SO HORRIBLE, OR WE MIGHT GROW TO LIKE IT. SOUTHERN HERITAGE PAGE 5

NEWS FROM THE FRONT: BRADFORD/ROSE CAMP Bradford/Rose YouTube Channel Update From Adjutant Joe Gibson The Camp Youtube Channel now has 398 subscribers. That is pretty impressive. The Channel is also pushing near 70,000 total views of the published videos. This is an excellent opportunity for outreach. Every time we post a video to this channel the subscribers receive a notification. Maybe not each subscriber for every new post, but you do see channel updates when you are subscribed to a channel. If you have any Confederate Heritage related videos you would like to add to this channel please let me know. Any of these videos involving Camp members or Camp functions as well need to be uploaded. Put a video camera in front of you and tell the world what it means for you to be a blood descendant of the finest fighting men the world has ever known. We can post that too! And those types of videos get lots of views and comments. Comments can only be posted if they are approved. This keeps the hate and vile language off the channel. 9 NEWS FROM THE FRONT: SCV HEADQUARTERS Confederate Monument Stays Put in Texas VICTORY!!! The Lamar, Texas County Commissioners voted to keep the Confederate Monument! The difference is that 150 compatriots and Friends showed up to express their desire to keep the monument right where it has been for over 110 years. OUTSTANDING!!! St. Louis Monument Deed Found by UDC and Sold to Museum, Lawsuits to Follow Against Mayor The Executive Director of the Missouri Civil War Museum, Mark Trout, said the museum is now the new owner of the monument and has the papers to prove it. According to Trout the original ordinance said that the Daughters of The Confederacy were the owners of the monument and Tuesday they handed the deed to the monument to the museum.trout said the ordinance passed by the city in 1912 stated that the United Daughters of The Confederacy could erect a monument in Forest Park but they would be responsible for maintenance.the mayor has previously said they want a say in how it is displayed in the future, to ensure it will that will never celebrate the confederacy. Trout said he can guarantees it won't be displayed until an appropriate historical setting is found and that it will never be re-erected in the city of St. Louis. Trout said he has reached out to the city and has not herd back. If he still doesn`t hear anything they will draft a document to send over to city hall. Southern Heritage Group Forces Anti-Monument Foe To Back Down Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller who is in league with the Anti-American Erase-ists had planned a on introducing a New Orleans style history purge at a Commission meeting earlier this June but pulled it after he didn t find public support of the plan. This is the home of SUNCOM and SOCOM. It would be political suicide to disrespect soldiers and tradition this way here in Hillsborough County said Save Southern Heritage Florida ( SSH FL ) spokesman, David McCallister. After press reports of his plans surfaced, SSH members and supporters were notified and the intense push back pre-empted his plans. County insiders reported there were few calls to take down the historical war memorial dedicated to Hillsborough County s fallen soldiers, while hundreds of angry voters swamped county commission switchboards demanding that the statue remain where it is. 12 I Am Their Flag by Dr. Michael Bradley In 1861, when they perceived their rights to be threatened, when those who would alter the nature of the government of their fathers were placed in charge, when threatened with change they could not accept, the mighty men of valor began to gather. A band of brothers, native to the Southern soil, they pledged themselves to a cause: the cause of defending family, fireside, and faith. Between the desolation of war and their homes they interposed their bodies and they chose me for their symbol. Their mothers, wives, and sweethearts took scissors and thimbles, needles and thread, and from silk or cotton or calico whatever was the best they had even from the fabric of their wedding dresses, they cut my pieces and stitched my seams. On courthouse lawns, in picnic groves, at train stations across the South the men mustered and the women placed me in their hands. "Fight hard, win if possible, come back if you can; but, above all, maintain your honor. Here is your symbol," they said. They flocked to the training grounds and the drill fields. They felt the wrenching sadness of leaving home. They endured sickness, loneliness, boredom, bad food, and poor quarters. They looked to me for inspiration. I was at Sumter when they began in jubilation. I was at Big Bethel when the infantry fired its first volley. I smelled the gun smoke along Bull Run in Virginia and at Belmont along the Mississippi. I was in the debacle at Fort Donelson; I led Jackson up the Valley. For Seven Days I flapped in the turgid air of the James River bottoms as McClellan ran from before Richmond. Sidney Johnston died for me at Shiloh as would thousands of others whose graves are marked "Sine Nomine," - without a name - unknown. With ammunition gone they defended me along the railroad bed at Manassas by throwing rocks. I saw the fields run red with blood at Sharpsburg. Brave men carried me across Doctor's Creek at Perryville. I saw the blue bodies cover Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg and the Gray ones fall like leaves in the Round Forest at Stones River. I was a shroud for the body of Stonewall after Chancellorsville. Men ate rats and mule meat to keep me flying over Vicksburg. I tramped across the wheat field with Kemper and Armistead and Garnett at Gettysburg. I know the thrill of victory, the misery of defeat, the bloody cost of both. When Longstreet broke the line at Chickamauga, I was in the lead. I was the last off Lookout Mountain. Men died to rescue me at Missionary Ridge. I was singed by the wildfire that burned to death the wounded in the Wilderness. I was shot to tatters in the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania. I was in it all from Dalton to Peachtree Creek, and no worse place did I ever see than Kennesaw and New Hope Church. They planted me over the trenches at Petersburg and there I stayed for many long months. I was rolled in blood at Franklin; I was stiff with ice at Nashville. Many good men bade me farewell at Sayler's Creek. When the end came at Appomattox, when the last Johnny Reb left Durham Station, many of them carried fragments of my fabric hidden on their bodies. In the hard years of so-called "Reconstruction," in the difficulty and despair of years that slowly passed, the veterans, their wives and sons and daughters, they loved me. They kept alive the tales of valor and the legends of bravery. They passed them on to the grandchildren and they to their children, and so they were passed to you. SOUTHERN HERITAGE PAGE 12

WAR IN TENNESSEE: VOLUME VI July 1862 After the loss of Memphis, General Grant wasted no time in turning the former Confederate city into a Union stronghold. His first act was to remove from Memphis all citizens holding commissions or those who voluntarily enlisted in the C.S. Army, employed by the Confederate government, or holding state or local office while loyal to the Confederacy. Afterwards he was able to instill those loyal to the Union to enact and carry out the business of a Union controlled Memphis. In East Tennessee, the bumbling General Bragg had decided to move the Army of Tennessee from Mississippi to Chattanooga. This would be the beginning of the Bragg years in Tennessee and Kentucky. Another Confederate General though would be the one to make a mark during July. On July 13, Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest captured a Union garrison at Murfreesboro, Tenn., after a surprise attack by his cavalry. Forrest left Chattanooga on July 9 with two cavalry regiments and joined other units on the way, bringing the total force to about 1,400 men. The major objective was to strike Murfreesboro, an important Union supply center on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, at dawn on July 13. The Murfreesboro garrison was camped in three locations around town and included detachments from four units comprising infantry, cavalry, and artillery, under the command of Brig. Gen. Thomas T. Crittenden who had just arrived on July 12. Between 4:15 and 4:30 am on the morning of July 13, Forrest s cavalry surprised the Union pickets on the Woodbury Pike, east of Murfreesboro, and quickly overran a Federal hospital and the camp of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment detachment. Additional Rebel troops attacked the camps of the other Union commands and the jail and courthouse. By late afternoon all of the Union units had surrendered to Forrest s force. The Confederates destroyed much of the Union supplies and tore up railroad track in the area, but the main result of the raid was the diversion of Union forces from a drive on Chattanooga. This raid, along with Morgan s raid into Kentucky, made possible Bragg s concentration of forces at Chattanooga and his early September invasion of Kentucky. SOUTHERN HERITAGE PAGE 13

CONFEDERATE PROFILES Dr. Samuel H. Stout Affiliation: Confederacy Unit: 3rd Tennessee Infantry Rank: Physician Samuel Hollingsworth Stout, who became famous for developing mobile hospitals, began his Confederate military career as regimental surgeon of the Third Tennessee Infantry Regiment, training with and treating the men at Camp Cheatham located in Robertson County, Tennessee in Due to the protracted illness of many of the men in his regiment, Stout recommended the relocation of the regiment to another camp. As a result, the Third Tennessee was ordered to complete training at Camp Trousdale in Sumner County, arriving on July 26. Stout resumed his treatment of the men in a well appointed hospital tent near a spring of excellent water, moving with his men to Bowling Green, Kentucky, after orders came down for the city to be occupied. On October 1st, Stout was transferred to Nashville for General Hospital duty at Gordon Hospital, in which capacity he served until the fall of Tennessee s capital in February Stout relocated to Chattanooga, and shortly after his arrival, he was made Medical Director of Hospitals for the entire Army of Tennessee. In this capacity, Stout was in charge of coordinating the acquisition of medical supplies and materials, the management of doctors and other medical personnel, and the near constant relocation of 60 hospitals in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. After the war, Stout taught at the Atlanta Medical College before resuming private practice in Georgia, and then Texas, where he died in SOUTHERN HERITAGE PAGE 14

Confederate Campfire: Recipes from the War Between the States Cabbage Stew Ingredients: - one head green cabbage - onions (slice the cabbage and onions - approximately ½ & ½) - salt pork (cut the salt pork into small cubes) - stewed tomatoes - salt, garlic salt, pepper, cajun seasoning or ground red pepper 1) Fry the salt pork in a very large, hot, cast iron pot until well browned (do not drain). 2) Turn the heat down (move to a cooler fire area). 3) Add cabbage and cook until wilted 4) Add onions and cook until wilted 5) Let cook approximately 1 hour (low fire) 6) Add tomatoes to more than cover 7) Let cook...and cook...and cook...simmer is a good word. You can't really overcook this dish - the flavors will blend nicely the longer it cooks. 8) Add garlic salt (small amount), then add salt and pepper to taste. 9) Add a very small amount of cajun seasoning or ground red pepper. Be sure to taste after adding each time. It takes the seasoning a few minutes to make themselves known. Better to add too little than too much. 10) Stir occasionally. 11) After approximately 2-3 hours, start tasting then season/cook more if necessary. SOUTHERN HERITAGE PAGE 15

SOUTHERN HERITAGE VOLUME 24, ISSUE 7 JULY 2017 THE EDITOR S THOUGHTS Compatriots, Happy July to everyone! I hope June was a good month for you and your family. I know we all had a hard month in May with the news of monuments being taken down and removed from the public places they had inhabited for over a 100 years, but June brought some good news with heritage protection in several states being upheld and here in Tennessee we saw the move to rename Forrest Hall at MTSU put on hold for a while. In other news of a more personal nature, Emily and I found out we will be having a little one in the near future! While I was in shock and still am, that I will be a father, I am happy to know that God has seen fit to grant us this gift. I know that Emily and myself will be in need of your prayers going forward as we take on this new addition to our lives. I have no doubt we will have a future SCV or UDC member when they reach the appropriate age!! Finally, as we start July, most of us will take time to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th and the birth of the United States. I know in my family, there were a few that stepped forward in the 1770 s to take up arms against the British monarchy and see that freedom be established here in America. I m sure there are many of you who can trace your ancestry back to some American Patriot who fought the British. In those days, they weren t necessarily considered a Patriot, in fact, mostly they were called Rebels. Rebel tends to have a negative connotation to it for some reason these days. I ve read several who do not like to call Confederates, Rebels. They say their ancestors were Patriots just like Washington, Jefferson, etc. While I tend to agree with them on that, I do not find Rebel offensive. I like to think that from the Revolutionary War to the War for Southern Independence, I have the blood of people running through my veins that would not be ruled!! They were called Rebels as a way to marginalize and mock their cause, but I see Rebel as a badge of honor. Whether it was the Revolution or the War for Southern Independence our forefathers wouldn t take anything lying down and if that makes you a Rebel then I will gladly accept that name!
