1 Tippecanoe County Historical Association Life &Information Times for members, Winter 2017 TCHA to Purchase New Building The Tippecanoe County Historical Association has entered into a formal signed agreement to purchase the Masonic Lodge building at the corner of 6 th Street and Columbia for $350,000. The 1967 building at 533 Columbia Street will be converted into a Community Center and Museum. The sale will be a cash purchase utilizing a portion of the funds from the Fowler House sale. This is an exciting project and just what TCHA has been needing said Executive Director Craig Hadley. We will now be able to offer all manner of programs not only to our membership, but to the residents of Tippecanoe County as well. Hadley also noted that this will not affect anything in regards to the Arganbright building. The library, archives, collections and administrative offices will remain intact there he said. The new building is approximately 15,000 square feet in size with a banquet room, commercial-style kitchen, an auditorium, office space, basement storage and other smaller rooms. TCHA will move all of its off-site collections that are both in the Fowler House and in various storage facilities around town, to the basement storage area. We have been in critical need of additional collections storage space for some time, said Hadley, and this new building has the added bonus of giving us that space. As for exhibits, there is approximately 1,100 square feet available. These exhibits will highlight just a taste of what TCHA has in its large collection. The new exhibits will be professionally designed and fabricated by exhibit design firm Taylor Studios based in Illinois ( These will include some interactive exhibits as well. The TCHA exhibit team will work closely with Taylor Studios to determine which items from the collection to highlight and some of the new exhibit areas will actually rotate exhibit items and topics. TCHA will spend 2017 raising the money for all of the building renovations and improvements with construction to begin sometime in the fall. The hope is that the building will be ready for a grand opening in January of Monies will consist of a combination of grants, individual donations and corporate sponsorships. Once completed, TCHA will be able to offer everything from public programs, monthly lectures, classic film nights, workshops and even galas. We also want this space to be a resource to the community, says Hadley. Just like the Feast of the Hunters Moon event where we support more than 50 non-profit organizations, we want to make this space available to those smaller non-profits in Tippecanoe County for event space that they could not normally afford elsewhere. That will then make this a true community center and a valuable resource in the heart of Lafayette. Hadley notes that there will be a few limited programs offered in the new building throughout 2017 that include some of the 50/300 anniversary events. Additionally, as part of the sale agreement with the Masons, TCHA will allow the Masons to continue to use the building for their meetings for an additional 6 months following the sale to allow them time to find a new home.

It has been a privilege to work at TCHA with such an amazing group of staff and volunteers and I have fallen in love with the area and its rich history. Now we are embarking on a great vision for the future together beginning with the purchase and renovation of a new building that will pave the way for future growth. It s truly exciting. I believe that 2017 will be a landmark year for TCHA. It is the year of the 50th annual Feast of the Hunters Moon event, the 300th anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon, our first annual black-tie fundraiser (the Great Gatsby Gala), and the purchase of our new building and its renovation. That is a lot to accomplish for any sized organization. The groundwork and foundation for this growth has been laid in recent years and it is my task to now work with all of you to move this association forward. This is a team effort and if we all work together, we can raise the monies that we need and have successful conclusions to all of our projects. In the end, it is about people. To make our dreams for this association and its future a reality I am asking each of you to join me in any way you can. Donate as much as you can, renew your membership and even increase your membership level of commitment. If you are not financially able to contribute as much as you would like, then donate your time and energy whenever you can, and promote the association to others and solicit donations on our behalf. Be a volunteer. There are so many ways you can help TCHA and we are a stronger organization with everyone pulling together. TCHA Life & Times 3 Winter 2017 A GREAT GATSBY GALA FUNDRASIER TCHA is starting a new annual event this year to help raise funds for the new building project.

This will be a black-tie event and the ladies are encouraged to dress as a flapper, silent film star, or simply dress elegantly. The event will include the live New Orleans jazz band Razzmatazz Jazz.

There will be an open bar and a series of heavy hors d oeuvres and appetizers. A silent and live auction will take place at the event as well.

3 TCHA Life & Times 3 Winter 2017 A GREAT GATSBY GALA FUNDRASIER TCHA is starting a new annual event this year to help raise funds for the new building project. The Great Gatsby Gala will take place on Saturday, April 1 st of this year at the Fowler House. This will be a black-tie event and the ladies are encouraged to dress as a flapper, silent film star, or simply dress elegantly. The event will include the live New Orleans jazz band Razzmatazz Jazz. Dancers from the area ballroom dance club will be on hand to demonstrate various 1920 s dances from the Lindy and Charleston, to the Foxtrot. There will be an open bar and a series of heavy hors d oeuvres and appetizers. A silent and live auction will take place at the event as well. Various artifacts from the 1920 s prohibition era will be on display, including Lafayette Brewing Company artifacts as well as a gun collection. This is just the beginning of this annual event and each year will have a specific historical theme to it. Next year we hope to have the gala at our new community center, said Executive Director Craig Hadley. That one will be a World War II big band swing dance! Tickets for the gala are $125 per person or $200 per couple. Formal invitations will be mailed out to the entire membership on February 1st, but the event is open to the public. All proceeds will go towards the creation of new exhibits at the new community center and museum on Columbia Street. TCHA Has a New Web Site! The Tippecanoe County Historical Association has launched a new web site replacing the old one. Still at the same URL of www. tippecanoehistory.org, this new web site is a facelift offering easier navigation and more content with an up-to-date look. Some of the new features include a section where board minutes and other association-related records, such as the annual report, will be made available to the public in the name of transparency. Additionally there will be highlights from the collection visible as an online exhibit and even a searchable database of some of the thousands of records and archives at TCHA. The web site was constructed by Maximumedia located in Lafayette ( and will be maintained by TCHA with new content being added regularly.

The entire report is available for viewing and downloading in PDF format on our web site at 50/300 program Series In commemoration and to celebrate the 50th Annual Feast of the Hunters Moon event and the 300th Anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon, TCHA will be holding a series of monthly events that revolve around topics related to these events. These will include the following events: Feast of the Hunters Moon TCHA celebrated a wonderful 2016 Feast, where 42,899 people came to view the pageant of 18th century life at Fort Ouiatenon recreated by over 6,000 enthusiastic participants. 3,777 school children enjoyed learning the history and cultural heritage of Ouiatenon over the span of two Feast school days, crafted especially for them by master traditional artisans, program performers, and living history reenactors. TCHA is now looking towards the 2017 Feast, with lots of planning being done to ensure that the 50/300 Feast is one to remember! The Feast of the Hunters Moon is treasured by the community it serves, and is an institution in the cultural arts. Are you interested in volunteering for the Feast? 5 TCHA Life & Times 5 Winter 2017 A Note of Thanks from the Tippecanoe Battlefield Staff As the Tippecanoe Battlefield Interpretive Center and History Store nears the end of what will surely be the best sales year since our 200th anniversary, the museum staff would like to thank all the visitors, volunteers, TCHA Board of Governors and TCHA staff for making 2016 a year to remember. We are very fortunate to participate in the stewardship of a special and hallowed site that holds such special meaning for the thousands of visitors we welcome each year. We are truly blessed to meet such a wonderfully interesting array of folks from all over the world, but it is equally rewarding to meet local people who are astounded that such an incredible treasure exists in their own back yard. If we had a nickel for every local resident who has said I ve driven by a hundred times but never stopped. I m so glad we stopped today, let s just say we d have many, many nickels! Many visitors are so impressed with their first visit that they often return to show off the battlefield, the museum and our unique and reasonably priced history store to visiting friends and family. The Battlefield staff would like to extend a special invitation to any members or governors who have not done so to pay us a visit. It s less than a ten minute drive from the north side of Lafayette, and as members, you are entitled to free museum admission and a 10% discount on purchases in the History Store. We are thrilled to share our excitement and devotion to this hallowed place with our visitors young and old, in the hope that some of them may become as passionately engaged in the special history of this site as we are. Found early in the excavations of the original fort site, this item has long been both a treasure and a mystery for researchers. Local jewelers have determined the stone to be white garnet. The image, a boy riding on a dolphin and playing a lyre, is a symbol associated with French royalty of the time. A seal like this would have been used in a ring or on a fob to authorize official documents or to seal important packages. So the mystery is, who was using this important symbol at a small French outpost on the frontier and how did it become lost at the fort?
