Tuesday, 22 November Lost and Found: the Bodleian Shakespeare Folio Dr Emma Smith (Fellow and Tutor in English, Hertford College) Dr Smith will discuss the story of how the Bodleian lost its First Folio of Shakespeare in the seventeenth century, and the efforts to get it back at the beginning of the twentieth. It s a story of personal rivalries as well as national ones, of a wonderfully amateurish and individual fundraising campaign, and of the way Oxford was changing on the eve of the First World War - as well as about the value of the book itself. 9 What s Online What s Online Treasures of the Bodleian A website and a free mobile app will accompany the autumn 2011 exhibition. They will feature all the items on display in the Exhibition Room. The website features additional material including: John James Audubon s Birds of America. John Donne s only surviving poem in his handwriting. Handel s conducting copy of Messiah. Several items are accompanied by video presentations made by experts from the University of Oxford. Podcasts of music and readings from a number of manuscripts in both the original language and English will bring the ancient items to life. Gough Map The Gough Map is internationally renowned as one of the earliest maps to show Britain in a geographically-recognizable form. Yet to date, questions remain of how the map was made, who made it, when and why. This website presents an interactive, searchable edition of the Gough Map, together with contextual material, a blog, and information about the project and the Language of Maps colloquium. A book about the Gough Map has also been published by the Bodleian Library: The Gough Map: The Earliest Road Map of Britain (see Maimonides S Mishneh Torah ox.ac.uk The website features part of the first comprehensive code of Jewish Law, Mishneh Torah. Written between 1170 and 1180 by the rabbinic scholar Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, known as Maimonides or by his Hebrew acronym Rambam, the Mishneh Torah is one of the most important manuscripts of the Bodleian s world-class Hebrew collection. Maimonides (1137/8-1204) is known as the greatest Jewish scholar of the Middle Ages, as well as an eminent royal physician and philosopher. The manuscript, which has been kept in the Bodleian Libraries since the 17th century, has unique significance in that the copy is signed by Maimonides himself, who declares in his own handwriting that this copy is the authorized version.
