Why is it so easy to promote one s self? Notice its both a religious and political event probably trying to unify the kingdom hence no name of a god is mentioned. Instigators - 3:7-12 Co-workers Why would they do this? Do people behave the same way today? How should we respond to them? Page 4

5 A 2 nd Chance - 3:13-15 Isn t the king being so gracious? Why not change here after all? Why not go and pray about it (Martin Luther did) What are some other logical reasons to yield? 1. Maybe God is giving you this out? 2. Your life and example have a greater impact than many others you are needed alive 3. God put the king there you should obey him 4. Idols are nothing thus worshiping nothing is nothing 5. The king likes you just give a slight bow (not a full prostrate) and both will be happy What rationale do we use to excuse our disobedience? How do you identify a compromising situation? How do you choose your battles? Are these compromises? Mac vs. PCs Going into a bar with friends from work Giving a low quote, like all the other competitors, knowing you can add $$ to the contract later Giving grades differently to different students Reading the Bible or watching your favorite tv show? Watching movies? Going to the beach? Hard work? No work all time with family and friends? Ask where is the real battle? Is it between me and the person? Is it between God and the system? What if they had not held to their convictions? CONCLUSION: They knew 3 things: 1. God is sovereign a. He is able b. He WILL deliver c. But He doesn t HAVE too.. 2. The scriptures 3. They understood the costs Since God is in control: - Purpose not to defile yourself - Turn to him in prayer - Don t compromise Page 6
