Not a Holiday lets do customs Hi everyone! I usually talk about holidays but I thought maybe if there is not one right now we should start talking about customs (boy that could go on forever)! So I decided lets start at the beginning LIFE: In Jewish law the soul exists prior to birth BUT life begins at birth that is when the baby is more than halfway through the birth canal. In Judaism there is no original sin (sin from Adam and Eve in the garden) so a baby is born pure, completely free of sin. A prayer is said daily that says, Oh G-d, the soul you gave me is pure. You created it, you fashioned, you breathed it into me. Traditionally there are not baby showers or buying of anything for the baby prior to birth, the reason is a superstition that drawing attention to the baby also brings bad luck to the baby. This is starting to change and some people are having showers, good for them, you gets lots of great stuff at showers just ask any mom!!! Brit Milah; otherwise known as circumcision: This commandment (Gen 17:10 and Lev 12:3) is the one that is followed by all Jews from secular to Hassidic. Most people just call it a BRIS. This covenant was originally made with Abraham and is therefore the first commandment that is specific to the Jews. A bris as stated in the bible is an outward physical sign of the covenant between G-d and the Jewish people. (as an aside circumcised males have a lower risk of certain cancers). A father is obligated to have his sons circumcised or they will have to have themselves circumcised when they become adults. The circumcision is done on the eight day of the baby s life and is done during the day. The day the 5

6 baby is born counts as day 1. The circumcision is done by a mohel, a pious man educated in Jewish Law and trained in the surgical technique used. Bet you did not know that sometimes a baby boy is born without a foreskin. In that case then a pinprick of blood is taken from the tip of the penis as a symbolic circumcision. While the bris is being done the baby is held by person known as a sandek (we would call that person a godfather). Also an ornate chair is set-aside for Elijah, who they say presides over all circumcision. Traditional blessings are said and a drop of wine is placed in the baby s mouth. The baby is then given a formal Hebrew name. And of course like all special events Jewish or not the traditional ritual is followed by a festive meal. (since it is usually in the morning lots of bagels and lox). So there are more traditions surrounding birth but it goes on and gives me more to write about another time!
