5 Reasons the Ten Commandments were given to Israel: Reveal His glory Reveal man s sinfulness Mark them as His chosen people; set-apart Provide Israel with a standard of godly living Prepare us for Christ

6 The Ten Commandments 1. You shall have no other gods before me 2. You shall not worship idols 3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God 4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy Commands 1-4 focus on our duty to God.

7 The Ten Commandments Commands 5-10 focus on our duty to people. 5. Honor your father and your mother 6. You shall not murder 7. You shall not commit adultery 8. You shall not steal 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor 10. You shall not covet

8 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Mother em ame a primitive word; a mother (as the bond of the family); in a wide sense (both literally and figuratively (like 1)): dam, mother, X parting.

13 What does honor look like? Expressing esteem in all occasions in thought, word, or gesture Obedience / submission to their lawful instructions and corrections, both gentle and challenging Receptive of the advice, direction, and consent of parents

14 What does honor look like? Acknowledge offenses against them Behave in a very respectful manner Doing everything you can to provide comfort to them; making their old age easy for them

15 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 17 Obedience to God s authority We are obedient because the Redeemer saved us. By being obedient we can inherit the promise of God. Obedience to God s authority is the Christian response to the question, Who has the right to rule in our lives? God is concerned about His people. Rebellion is costly, but obedience promises long life!
