1 Introduction For two thousands years people have been arguing about grace and the law. From the time of the beginning of the church in Jerusalem until modern times, there have been people who have said that salvation can only come when we are obedient to the law. Other people have stated that the grace of God means that we don't have to obey any law. What is the truth concerning grace, salvation, and the laws of God? 2 Salvation By Grace - Part 1 In the beginning of the Christian church, the Jewish priests who believed in Christ wanted to make everyone conform to the Jewish ceremonial laws including circumcision and said that no one could be saved unless they kept the law: And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved. But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. (Acts 15:1,5 NKJV) A council was held in Jerusalem to decide the issue. Peter rose up and spoke before the congregation and recounted their failure to keep the law and how God had saved both them and the gentiles through grace: So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they. (Acts 15:8-11 NKJV) After listening to Paul and Barnabus describe the work of salvation of God among the gentiles, the Church issued a ruling and stated that the gentiles did not need to keep the law of Moses in order to be saved: Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. (Acts 15:19-20 NKJV) Paul tells us that no one is justified by keeping the law: Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20 NKJV) Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. (Galatians 2:16 NKJV) Paul told us that our salvation is purely because of the grace of God and not because of anything that we've done: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ 1
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NKJV) James tells us that once we are saved, we demonstrate that we have saving faith by the good works we do, by our obedience to God: But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. (James 2:18-24 NKJV) Our good works don't save us, instead they follow after our salvation. But they do follow our salvation, and someone who has no good works to show, someone who is disobedient to the commands of God, should question whether they are really saved. Our obedience to the commands of God demonstrates our saving faith. Every Christian who is growing in grace and knowledge will have the fruit of the Holy Spirit in their lives to the glory of God. However, just because someone exhibits good works doesn't necessary mean that they are saved. There are many, many people in the world who don't know Christ, who aren't saved, and yet they demonstrate good works. We cannot use a test of works to say whether someone is saved or not. We can't see into other people's hearts. The judgment of who is saved is not left up to us. God knows those who are His: Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (2 Timothy 2:19 NKJV) James' statement that works follow faith and works prove faith is echoed elsewhere in The Bible when drawing a parallel between belief and obedience and unbelief and disobedience. The Israelites in the desert refused to believe that God loved them and would be with them to conquer their enemies and were disobedient to His command to enter into the promised land: When your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, and said, It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they do not know My ways. So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest. (Psalms 95:9-11 NKJV) It was a disbelief or distrust of God that led to their disobedience. The author of Hebrews confirms that their disobedience was because of unbelief: And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. (Hebrews 3:18-19 NKJV) 2
There are people who have hyper extended the idea of grace to mean that there are no commands or laws that we need to follow. They claim freedom to engage in any behavior whatsoever. But Paul rebukes this thinking: Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law. (Romans 3:31 NKJV) What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (Romans 6:1-2 NKJV) We are saved by faith, and because of our salvation, we are obedient to the commands of God. God commands us to love Him, to love others, and to abstain from sin. Since our salvation leads to obedience to His word, are there laws in the Old Testament that still apply to us? What laws were superceded by the covenant of grace and what laws does God expect us to live up to? 3 The Law of God - Part 1 Before we can talk about the law of God we have to understand what we are referring to when we use the term "law." Is there more than one law? Is The Bible speaking of the same thing everytime it uses the term law? Are the Christian writers throughout history speaking of the same thing whenever they use the term law? We might say that the law can refer to one of three different concepts. 3.1 The Moral Law of God - Part 1 The first concept is that the term law refers to a moral law based on God's righteousness and holiness. God has set a standard of behavior of right and wrong. It is based on His unchanging character. When Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment, He replied: Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV) The Ten Commandments are just enumerations of these two great commands, to walk in love towards God and man. The moral law of God is a standard of righteousness that we can always use to measure ourselves against. The moral law of God is an unattainable standard because it is based on the infinite righteousness and holiness of God. Anytime we look into the moral law of God we see where we've fallen short: As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one. (Romans 3:10-12 NKJV) The Ten Commandments 1 can be divided into two sections, the love of God, and the love of man. The love of God is encapsulated in the first four commandments: 1 Exodus 20:3-17; Deuteronomy 5:
You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make any carved image for worship. You shall not take the name of your Lord in vain. You shall observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy. The love of man is encapsulated in the remaining commandments. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder You shall not commit adultery You shall not steal You shall not bear false witness You shall not covet anyone or anything that someone else has. Jesus explained the moral law of God by saying that it wasn't just if someone acted contrary to the requirements of the law who would be condemned, but anyone who violated the law in their thoughts would also be condemned. 2 People had to exhibit righteousness in their thoughts, in their speech, and in their actions. God never changes, and He never lies. Since the moral law is based upon the character of God, it also will never change. What God has declared righteous will always be righteous and what God has declared wicked and immoral will always be wicked and immoral. God loves righteousness and hates wickedness, and commands all of His children to exhibit the same character as He has: Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:15-16 NKJV) Never will the conventions of society change what God has called wicked and immoral into something righteous. It will never happen, and the societies in the past who tried to make it happen were destroyed! When God gave the law on Mount Sinai, the Israelites said that they would obey it: So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, All the words which the Lord has said we will do. And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord. And he rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins, and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient. And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, This is the blood 2 Matthew 5-6, the Sermon on the Mount. 4
of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words. (Exodus 24:3-8 NKJV) We think of ourselves as better educated and more enlightened than people of the past. If modern man had been in the place of the Israelites, if we had been in the presence of God when He gave His moral law, we would have said the same thing, "All the words which the Lord has said we will do." And, we would have been just as successful as the Israelites. We would have failed to keep the law. The moral law of God showed that mankind needed a savior because everyone has failed to keep the law. Paul called the law of God our tutor to bring us to Christ: But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor [KJV:schoolmaster] to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
