1 313/1 CRE PAPER 1 JULY 2017 END OF TERM II EXAMINATION MARKING SCHEME 1 a) Give the reasons why the Bible was compiled into its present form by the early Christians. - The eye witnesses of Jesus were being killed - In order to prevent information from getting lost - Due to the expansion of the Church/ increased number of believers/ who needed materials to refer to. - To counteract false teachings/teachers who were confusing the believers. - To ensure that same doctrines/beliefs were being taught to all Christians. - To reach out to the Jews in diaspora /gentiles. - To preserve an orderly account of Biblical theme /avoid distortion. (4x2=8mrks) b) Identify six effects of translation of the Bible into African Local Language. - Led to development of African languages. - Led to spread of word of God to many people. - People were able to apply to Bible teachings in their lives. - Contributed to improved literacy levels among Africans. - Led to emergence of African Independent Churches/schools. - Contributed to numerical growth of the church/expansion of church membership. - Give people an opportunity to analyze the Bible in relation to their cultures. - Made Africans to incorporate their cultural practices into Christian worship. - Enhance development of printing press/bookshop/ creation of jobs. - It has made the people to carry out researches in African beliefs/practices. - Led to ecumenical cooperation among Christians in Africa. 2 2 a) Describe the sealing of the Sinai covenant (Ex 24:1-8) - Moses built an altar at the foot of mountain Sinai using 12 stones representing 12 tribes of Israel. - He sent young men to offer burnt and peace offering of oxen to Yahweh. - Moses divided the blood into two halves and poured it into basins. - He took half of the blood and poured it against the altar. - He read the book of covenant to the people. - The people responded that they would be obedient to God s law. - Moses took the remaining half of the blood and sprinkled it to the people. - - Moses told them that the blood had sealed their covenant with God. 7x1=7mrks b) State seven ways in which Israelites worshipped God in the wilderness. - They offered sacrifices to God. - Gave offerings to God/burnt incense. - Use of the Ark of the Covenant and tabernacle which they approached with respect. - Observed festivals e. g Passover, feast of weeks. - Built altar for God. - Observed the Sabbath. - Dedicated their male first borns to God. - Assembled at Mt. Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments which they made use of. - Prayed to God. - Song and danced. c) List six lessons Israelites learnt about God from the renewal of the covenant. - God is loving. - He is forgiving/forgives those who repent. - He hates evil/punishes evil. - He doesn t share His glory/ he is a jealous God. - He is merciful - He fulfils his promises/faithful. - He is slow to anger. - -God is holy. - God demands obedience. 3 a) Identify seven characteristics of local Canaanite religion. - It was polytheistic/ many gods/goddesses. - Had elaborate virtues to the gods/ goddesses.. - Human sacrifices were offered. - Had prophets and prophetesses for each gods/goddesses. - The gods were represented by images and symbols. - Built high places for gods and goddesses /many places of worship. - Had feasts in honor of their gods/ goddesses.. - Temple prostitution was practiced. - Nature religion/cyclic/changes in season. - Each god/ goddess played a specific role in the community. - Had chief god and goddess/ had family gods.
3 b) Give reasons why Elijah faced danger and hostility as a prophet of God. - He had pronounced 3years drought in Israel which resulted to severe famine. - He ordered the killing of prophets of Baal. - He declared God s judgment to Ahab when he possessed Naboth s vineyard. - Baalism was the official religion and any prophet who preached against it was killed. - Advocated for unpopular Yahweh worship/ stood for the covenant way of life. - Proclaimed doom on the entire family of Ahab. - He blamed Ahab and Jezebel s sins for being the cause of the drought. 6x1=6mrks c) Identify seven qualities of Prophet Elijah that a Christian leader should possess. - Truthfulness. - Courage. - Faithfulness. - Loving/caring. - Honest. - Responsibility. - loyalty/obedience - Respectful - Prayerfulness. 7 x1=7mrks 4a) Identify ways in which prophets in the Old Testament received God s revelation. - Dream and visions - Through word or messages which come into their minds with great power. - Through events and experiences in their lives. - Through signs - Through prayers - Through written scrolls/ scriptures. - Through other men of God/prophets. 6 x1=6mrks b) Give seven teachings of prophet Amos on the day of the Lord. - It will be a day of terror and disaster. - God will punish Israelites for disobedience/remember their evil deeds. - Land shall tremble/earthquakes. - People will mourn/no happiness. - Darkness at noon. - Feasts and festivals will not be joyful. - People will thirst/hunger for word of God. - People will faint in process of searching for word of God. - It will be a day of disappointment to Israelites. - The wicked will not escape God s judgment. 7x1= 7mrks
4 c) State the relevance of prophet Amos teaching on election of Israel to Christians in Kenya. - Christians are God s people. - It is God who chooses them to be Christians. - God protects his people from their enemies. - Christians are chosen by God to proclaim the good news/services. - Christians will be punished by God if they do wrong. - They should always repent their sins/ask for forgiveness. - Priests/Bishops/church leaders are chosen by God. 6x1=6mrks 5 a) Identify the final reforms Nehemiah carried out to restore the worship of God in Judah. - Cleaning of the temple. - Reinstating the levities and others temple workers. - He ordered closure of Jerusalem for proper Sabbath observance. - Separated the Jewish from foreigners. - He threw out the household of Tobiah from the chamber. - Cleansed the chamber in the temple. - Returned the vessels of the house of God. - Appointing treasures of the storehouse. - Stopped buying and selling of wares on the Sabbath day. - He ordered an end to mixed marriages/foreigners. 6x1 =6mrks b) Explain the different occasions when Nehemiah prayed. - Before asking King Ar-ta-xerxes to let him go back to Judah. - When he learnt that the Jews in Judah were suffering and walls of Jerusalem were in ruins. - When his enemies made fun of Jews and discouraged them from building wall of Jerusalem. - When the enemies conspired to attack Jerusalem to the construction work. - After he condemned the leaders for oppressing the poor. - When his enemies planned to harm him. - When he was frightened by Shemaiah to hide in the temple claiming that there was a plot to kill him. - When he cleansed and reorganized the temple for worship. - When he warned the people of Judah against violating of Sabbath. - When he chased away a son-in-law of Sanballat. - After clearing Israelites of foreign influence. 8 x 1=8mrks c) State six ways in which Christians resolve conflicts among themselves. - Praying over the issue/problem. - Offering guidance and counseling to the affected. - Paying visits/talking to the offended. - Involving church leaders as arbitrators. - Forgiving one who has wronged/ ask for forgiveness. - Willingness by offenders to accept their mistakes/accept liabilities/ pay for damages. - Withdrawing some privileges for the period of time so that one can reform. - By sharing meals/eating together. - Through shaking/accepting greetings. 6 x 1=6mrks
