1 1 I PROPHESY: BLOOD MOON September 10, 2012 PRE-TITLE TEASE Are these the last days for planet Earth? There s going to be great famines. There s going to be uh great earthquakes. The biggest calamity that s going to be coming is war not just middle-east war, but worldwide wars. Ancient Biblical prophecies seem to suggest that we are moving towards an alarming destiny. It says immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be dark and the moon will turn to blood, the stars from heaven will fall, the powers of heaven will be shaken. But what does this language really mean? From my perspective the Book of Revelation is ultimately about hope. It's saying, Don't be deceived by appearances. 2 2 Some Biblical scholars believe that the Bible s most studied prophecies may soon come to pass. Pastor Mark Biltz Senior Pastor El Shaddai Ministries In Joel it says the sun will turn to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and dreadful day of the lord. Images of a changed sun and moon are found in apocalyptic warnings throughout the Bible. Revelation is the final book of the Bible and has the most studied prophecies of all time. It was written by the Apostle John while exiled for his faith. The apostle John saw into the future and saw the great calamities that are coming. The Book of Revelation is all about the prophesies of end time events the last days - when the Lord will come. This book contains writings believed to foretell events surrounding the return of the Messiah. Revelation states. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of hair, the whole moon turned blood red Dr. Jaymie Matthews Professor of Astrophysics University of British Columbia ASTRO-PHYSICIST The only thing that can completely obscure the moon in the sky is heavy cloud. But atmospheric pollution can dim the moon, and even make it look blood red. Pollution from industry and war could change the appearance of the sun and moon across the earth. But could this prophetic language have another meaning? The prophets write in poetry precisely because they want to impact people, and they choose these very powerful images. So the book of Revelation uses this symbolism to say 2

3 3 that everything you ve trusted, everything you ve ever known is going to collapse around you. New research has led others to believe these prophecies connect to physical signs from the heavens. There are different levels of interpretation but the plain meaning of this text is an eclipse. Well during a lunar eclipse the moon turns orange, sometimes even red. Molecules in the earth s atmosphere scatter light from the sun around the edges of the earth so that it falls on the moon even when the moon is completely in the earth s shadow. This earth shine can make the moon turn blood red. In March 2008 I saw a total lunar eclipse over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem Israel, so I went to NASA s website to do some research. It records 5000 years of eclipses telling you exactly when and where these eclipses occur. I noticed in 2014 and 2015 there were four total blood moons in a row, back to back. I noticed these four blood moons happened on the first day of Passover, then the first day of Tabernacles. Then again, the first day of Passover and the first day of Tabernacles and these days are incredibly significant. From the Jewish perspective, Passover is a memorial of their redemption out of Egypt, when God said to take the blood of a lamb and put it as a sign and those that marked their door post - the death angel would pass over those homes. For Christians, Passover is a memorial of Jesus death on the cross. And he died at the very same time the Passover lambs were being slaughtered. So the same time they were binding the Passover lamb to the horns of the altar, they were binding Jesus to the cross. IMAGES CRUCIFIXION The Feast of Tabernacles was a memorial that the Jews were to remember of the exodus from Egypt when they lived in tents for 40 years in the wilderness - where they were to totally depend upon God to meet all of their needs. The concept of a tent or a tabernacle was that it was to be a temporary dwelling place. God wanted to impress how this body is a temporary dwelling place and even this world is a temporary dwelling place. Are the blood moons set to fall on Passover and Tabernacles a sign that 3

4 4 God is about to change this temporary world forever? When God is sending a lunar eclipse falling on those feast days, he s trying to tell us something. BUMPER OUT BLOCK TWO BUMPER IN Blood moons have fallen on Passover and Tabernacles only three times in the last thousand years. And each time has coincided with a deadly turning point in human history. The Prophet John s Book of Revelation speaks of the sun turning black and the moon turning blood red in the last days of the world. But how is this language meant to be interpreted? Could he be speaking of eclipses with remarkable timing? Dr. Jaymie Matthews Professor of Astrophysics University of British Columbia Well astronomers now know extremely accurately how the earth and the moon move in their orbits. That means that we can predict when the alignment is necessary for lunar and solar eclipses will occur. And we know when those alignments have occurred in the past. A tetrad is when four lunar eclipses occur in a row spaced by about six months. In the 1500s, there were five times that the tetrads appeared - or four blood moons. But none of them happened where they all fell on the feast days. 5 5 Over five centuries ago a saga unfolded that echoed the Jews Biblical exodus out of ancient Egypt is very significant, that s when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but that s also when all the Jews were kicked out of Spain. This was during the Spanish Inquisition, and sure enough we have four blood moons 1493, 1494, on Passover and Tabernacles. The Bible was written by Jewish people. And it s all about the history of Israel, and it s a prophecy of the future of Israel. So to have these eclipses happen on Passover and Tabernacles you can see the connection to the Jewish people. After this event, no tetrads of blood moons coincided with these holy days for nearly 500 years. Then, the events of World War 2 led to a new global migration. Jewish people from across the world returned to their ancient Holy Land. After hundreds of years of not having a nation to call their own, the 1948 War of Independence confirmed the existence of a Jewish homeland the state of Israel. The newly national state of Israel was able to repel them all and retain the land that it received from the UN. What s really amazing to me is here Israel becomes a nation in 1948, and then what do we have in 1949 and 1950 but four blood moons right in a row on Passover and Tabernacles. The mysterious alignment of blood moons and Jewish holy days happens once more in the 20 th century following another deadly war. 5

6 6 MIRON REZUN In 1967, Israel was once again attacked. Instead of losing land, at the end of the Six Day War, Israel was able to bring under its own control both Jerusalem and the entire west bank. After the Six Day War, a tetrad of blood moons occurred on Passover and Tabernacles in 1967 and And that s why having these signs fall on Passover and Tabernacles is very significant. A tetrad of blood moons will again occur in 2014 and I believe these eclipses in 2014, 2015 are a sign of war that s coming to Israel. Are the conditions set for an impending war? MIRON REZUN Nobody wants war, but war is inevitable because Iran is hell bent on becoming a nuclear power in the middle-east, and it has some strong allies. If Iran gets the bomb and there is a nuclear exchange, the calamity will be felt throughout the entire middle-east, and its repercussions will be felt throughout the entire world. Is a major war inevitable? A war with a global impact? A nuclear war? Dr. Julian Schofield Professor of Strategic Studies Concordia University If a nuclear weapon did go off over a major population center, the message would be that nuclear war is doable and we could conceivably see thousands of nuclear weapons being built very quickly. Tens of thousands of people train with nuclear weapons, and after a while they accept the apocalyptic vision. It's just a matter of time before a small nuclear war becomes a big nuclear war. 6

7 7 But for some, signs that the world nears a major confrontation abound. MIRON REZUN I believe that war is not only inevitable, it s imminent. BUMPER OUT BLOCK THREE BUMPER IN Prophetic phrases fill the bible that the moon will turn to blood ; that the sun will turn to darkness. Are these writings symbolic in nature, or could they be fulfilled through environmental conditions, or through celestial events? Dr. Jaymie Matthews Professor of Astrophysics University of British Columbia During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes almost directly between the earth and the sun, and the ratio of the sizes of the moon and the sun and the ratio of their distances from the earth almost exactly balance. And that means that the moon can almost exactly block out the bright disc of the sun. Pastor Mark Biltz Senior Pastor El Shaddai Ministries But what s significant in 2015 you also have two solar eclipses: a total solar eclipse beginning the religious year and then another solar eclipse on the Feast of Trumpets. The solar eclipse on September 13, 2015 is set to fall on the Feast of Trumpets it also known as Judgement Day. Judgement Day has different meanings. One of them is how every year on the Feast of Trumpets all of mankind appears before God and he looks and decides who s going to live and who s going to die this next year. 7

8 8 There is also prophecy of an ultimate Judgment Day. It says in Joel, There has never been a day like this, nor will there be any day like it after it, even to many generations. So we can see it s not going to be a very sweet time. The tribulation is a time of darkness and gloominess. It s a day of clouds and thick darkness. Clouds, darkness, and even blood red moons are appearing across the world. These events connect to the current state of the earth s atmosphere and not eclipses. The worst type of pollution for human health is actually fine particles suspended in the atmosphere. In heavily populated cities with a lot industry and a lot of automobiles, the moon can look red even when it's not close to the horizon. On a very polluted day, the midday sun can look as red as it does at sunset due to scattering of sunlight by heavy smog. Car exhaust and certain industrial emissions are major sources but another major source is a natural one: forest fires. Rikk Watts Professor, New Testament Regent College Growing up in Australia, one of the things you know about are bush fires, and they re horrifying things. What you have is this really dense smoke, just billowing up like columns. And it makes the sun look dark in the middle of the day and at night, through the smoke, the moon looks this brilliant blood red. Regarding these prophecies, I think it s a very similar thing going on. The smoke is affecting the appearance of the sun and the moon. Are the blood moons appearing across the Earth, and forecast for the near future, signs that we are about to engage in a war without equal? In the Book of Joel we have this picture of blood, fire and columns of smoke. This is the imagery associated with an advancing army. The same language is picked up in the Book of Revelation. Will nuclear winter be a part of a final judgment? Are we facing an inescapable fate? 8

Will these prophesies be fulfilled as the result of pollution and war? Rikk Watts Author Isaiah s New Exodus in Mark Most of the prophets write in poetry because they want to communicate the power of the events they're describing. And in Joel: fire, blood, columns of smoke; these advancing armies; the destruction. And so the sun appears dark at midday and the moon looks like blood in the night. So even though Joel is using poetic imagery, they will really see the sun darkened and the moon looking blood red. But what it actually means is something far more terrifying: the destruction of their crops; the destruction of their cities; the end of their social order as they know it. So the Book of Revelation uses this symbolism to say that everything you ve ever known, everything you ve ever trusted, is going to collapse around you. Now this could happen in a whole manner or ways, or it could happen through war, because God has historically used war to judge nations. IMAGES IRAN Are these prophecies merely symbolic, or is the threat of an apocalyptic war a real and present danger? MIRON REZUN If Iran gets the bomb, any terrorist organization can get the bomb, and that tactical nuclear weapon can then be used, indiscriminately, by any terrorist organization, anywhere in the world. 18:00 9

10 10 Dr. Julian Schofield Professor of Strategic Studies Concordia University If a nuclear weapon was detonated over a major population center, the message it would send is that nuclear war is doable. It's an open secret that nuclear weapons are incredibly usable. You can build a lot more nuclear weapons than the other guys got cities, and cities can't run and hide. It's not about winning nuclear war because nuclear war is not winnable. It's about maintaining control so that you don t have escalation and the two sides don t destroy each other. The secondary effects of nuclear war would include the collapse of the medical system, the food supply, the transportation system, the ecology and it would result in the deaths of millions. In the Middle East you have a very fragile ecology because the food supply is very concentrated. You have large numbers of people living in very large cities. A nuclear war in the Middle East would have a huge effect politically and economically on these populations. Is mankind marching towards an inevitable demise? Dr. Jaymie Matthews Professor of Astrophysics University of British Columbia Well nuclear or biological weapon holocausts are self-inflicted ends to civilization. Species suicide if you will. If we were to unleash the world's entire nuclear arsenal all at once we'd inject huge quantities of fine particles in to the atmosphere. This global super smog could be dense enough to filter the sunlight reaching the earth's surface, triggering a catastrophic global cooling cycle - a nuclear winter. Pollution from the wide-spread use of nuclear weapons would completely block out the sun and moon. 10

11 11 Dr. Julian Schofield Author Militarization and War We'd be in the dark - all the time, possibly for years. In a nuclear winter the dust thrown in to the upper atmosphere by the nuclear explosions would obscure sunlight - cooling the earth, reducing agricultural output and threatening mass starvation. Pastor Mark Biltz Senior Pastor El Shaddai Ministries So to summarize, it s, it s basically total calamity that is coming with all of the earthquakes and the famines and wars that are going to be encompassing the entire earth. These predictions don't satisfy my common sense as a human being or my standards as a scientist, and they have all failed the ultimate test. We're still here. Although God has used wars in the past to judge nations, Revelation is so full of symbolism that I'm just not persuaded it's prophesying a final climatic battle. NARRATION Is the ultimate message of the Blood Moon prophecy one of fear, or one of hope to those who heed their warnings? To see Revelation as some kind of road map to the future or primarily about this frightening thing, I think is to miss the point. It really is about hope. People should get from Revelation that no matter how bad things might look, God is in control of the future. END CREDITS 11
