1 The Shofar January 2008 Synagogue Etz Chayim, 7705 Bailey Cove Rd. Huntsville, AL Av 5768 Last Yom Kippur I spoke about the Hunstville impact on my life. How the joy of sharing Shabbas with the wonderful Etz Chayim community, teaching Torah to involved caring people, making merry with the children of the religious school, have all lead me to reconsider the path of my life. I miss the joy and the pain of working with a Jewish community, the excitement of sharing ideas, life events and just plain relating to people on a simple human to human and Jew to Jew level. Two weeks ago when I received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary, it was a statement that my career of nearly 30 years has been a worthy endeavor; that the highs and lows of the rabbinate balance out to a continuing opportunity to love Torah and Jews. This week I will be speaking to the Rabbinical Assembly about a possible attempt to return to the full time rabbinate. Nothing is certain, but I need your help, if I am to get back into the world where my neshoma belongs. Jewish War Veterans float with our scouts 11/12/2007 If anyone would like to write a letter of reference or testimonial about my involvement with you in Etz Chayim, I would be very grateful and thankful. You have been so instrumental in my desire to reclaim my legacy. It is an honor to know you all. Allan Meyerowitz PS-please send any such letter to ameyerowitz@bellsouth.net Rabbi Weekends: Jan , 2008 Feb. 29 March 2, 2008 April 11 13, 2008 May 2 4, 2008 What I like most about this time of year is the ongoing celebrations we have at the end of the yea from Chanukah through a second New Years it is a wonderful time to embrace family, friends and reflect on the year just past and make new goals for the year ahead. While we are in the chill of Winter, we need to think about Spring in Israel. Tu B'Shevat will be on January 22, 2008 and the Religious School will be celebrating on Sunday, January 20th. Pam Rhodes will be leading our children in a Seder. Rabbi Meyerowitz will also be in attendance on Sunday. Pam will need volunteers to help her on January 20 th. Please let us know if you can help. This is also the time of year that JNF begins their annual TREE PLANTING fundraiser. We will be The Shofar Page 1 of 6

2 receiving envelopes to plant trees in honor of someone or in memory of someone. You can make your donations now and present their certificate at the time of their personal celebration. This is a wonderful mitzvah for your loved ones and the state of Israel. We had our first Family Service on December7, 2007 and the 5th graders, lead by Blair Eurton, did a fantastic job. Monica Ward helped the 1st graders talk about Hanukkah. They were fun and informative (sorry that Sandy Pepper was ill that night). The kindergarten children had an art and photo exhibit. I love to see the new children who join the community of learners. The next Family Service will be on Friday, February 1, 2008 at 7:00pm and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will participate. Tot Shabbat will meet again on Saturday, January 12, 2008 from 10:00 to 11:30am...the topic will be Tu B'Shevat, naturally. Thanks again to all who participated in the Etz Chayim Latke Party. Where do we begin, the Sisterhood, Mens Club, cooks, graters, peelers, set up, clean up, everyone who participated, made it a huge success. We had a terrific time at our annual Chanukah Latke Party held on Sunday, December 9 th at the synagogue. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped purchase the food, peel the potatoes and onions, tossed the salad, set up the tables and the decorations, collected the money, prepared the delicious lunch and assisted with the clean up! And, thanks to Joe Sacks & Sam Kleiner, who conducted Bingo prior to lunch, and to BJ Brigadier for conducting the raffle for the framed needlepoint menorah. What a huge success!! Interfaith Mission Service: 12 bags were delivered to Food Pantry. Let s keep up the good work. Deliveries are made biweekly. Please continue to support the Food Pantry and First Stop. In February, the Sisterhood is hosting a White Elephant Sale. Start saving all of your items that you wish to donate to this event. (They should be at least a $5.00 minimum value.) Look for post cards with more information on all upcoming events!! Wishing you all a Happy New Year!! Sue Paddock Rosh Chodesh - A Celebration of Women Rosh Chodesh, the celebration of the new moon, is a minor Jewish festival that became a traditional celebration of women. The connection dates as far back as Talmudic times, where women were permitted to refrain from all work on Rosh Chodesh as a reward for not participating in the sin of the golden calf. Modern commentators link the cycle of the moon to the cycles of change in women's lives from young woman, to mother, to elder in the community. Learn more about the history and practice of Rosh Chodesh and how it relates to women's spirituality and Jewish observance when Huntsville Hadassah, Temple B'nai Sholom Sisterhood, and Etz Chayim Sisterhood, host Cantor Jessica Roskin from Bir- The Shofar Page 3 of 6

4 mingham. She will present a program at Temple B'nai Sholom on Sunday, January 13 th at 2pm in the Temple sanctuary. All women are invited to join us for a program filled with history, spirituality, song, and a question and answer period. There is no charge, and you don't have to be a Hadassah or Sisterhood member to attend. The program is co-sponsored by Huntsville Hadassah, Temple B'nai Sholom Sisterhood, and Etz Chayim Sisterhood members. The same goal will then be what we will want to achieve for Shabbat Morning, later. I would like to know if you are interested in participating and also if you have several preferred times, late afternoon/early evening during weekdays or possibly on Sunday. I would like to start soon, so please respond ASAP to zevgold@yahoo.com I am also looking for some assistant instructors, so if you wish to help, I would appreciate hearing that too. Thank you for your consideration, Bill Goldberg Cantor Jessica Roskin joined Temple Emanu-El in the summer of She was invested as clergy and received her master s degree in sacred music from the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion, and she received her Bachelor s degree in music and religious studies from Indiana University. Taken from the website of Temple Emanu-El - Birmingham, Alabama. We have our very own local Israeli Baker. Marcie Hami, the wife of the Israeli liaison officer used to have a bakery business in Israel. She bakes all kinds of cookies and cakes. If you are interested in specific baked goods please contact Marcie via at: hamiy@bellsouth.net We have not had a Junior Congregation available to help train our youth in leading Shabbat Services and I believe that we should try to correct that. I propose to conduct a series of weekly one hour classes at the synagogue starting with the prayers in the Friday night services and then moving to the Shabbat Morning Services. Classes would be for persons age ten years and older. The main enrollment requirements are some ability to carry a tune and to read Hebrew, although most of the material will also be available in transliteration. The main melodies/tunes are mostly available on line at and can be downloaded. The goals of the initial classes are to develop enough skill & familiarity that you will be able to lead parts of the Friday night services soon and eventually able to lead the entire service. If you have High School & college students that might be thinking about Summer jobs, Redstone Arsenal has openings for Science/Engineering apprentices and Defense Intel Agency has openings here and in Washington DC. See below. Science/Engineering apprentice positions are for US citizens 15 year old (as of 2 June 2008) and older High School & College students. Employment periods are 8, 10 & 12 weeks and are for math, physics, chemistry, engineering, & computer science. Application deadline is Jan. 31, Contact Julie Lumpkins at Civilian personnel.
