After the Flood I. Introduction and review A. The flood has now come to an end B. What now for Noah and his family II. Genesis 8 A. God remembered Noah [8:1] 1. This word as used here does not imply forgotten 2. Remembered rk;z" zakar {zaw-kar'} Meaning: 1) to remember, recall, call to mind a. It is in the imperfect tense b. The imperfect differs from the perfect in being more vivid and pictorial. The perfect expresses the "fact", the imperfect adds color and movement by suggesting the "process" preliminary to its completion. Further, its the kind of progression or imperfection and unfinished condition of the action may consist it its frequent repetition. c. We should understand this word to mean: thinking about with loving concern 3. God Elohim, the strong, faithful, covenant keeping God a. You see that in 8:1; 8:15-16; 9:1, 8-12 b. But in 8:20-22 it uses Yahweh, why? 1 6
c. Because now we are dealing with sin, judgment and righteousness and Yahweh is the holy, righteous God B. Noah sends out a raven 8:7 1. Scavenger, could perch on surfaces that would be objectionable to say a dove 2. He never returned 3. The dove would return until she had a place to nest C. God directs Noah to leave the ark 8: He and his family had been in that ark for 377 days [Ryrie] 2. He comes out to a brand new world 3. Its radically different and much more hostile a. Longevity decreased b. Habitable land areas reduced c. Polar regions too cold d. Equator too hot e. Oceans much more extensive f. Territory unknown g. Animal estrangement h. Land areas left barren as a result of the flood D. The seasons [8:20-22] 1. As Noah leaves the ark what is the first thing that he did a. Offered a sacrifice to his God 2 6
b. If he offered an animal, there were only two of each kind, that would guarantee extinction wouldn t it? c. Offered one or more of the clean animals, of which he took seven d. Where had the human race gone wrong before, the religion instituted by Cain in offering to God a new way, from the fruit of the ground e. Noah immediately started things off right in reestablishing the correct way to worship God and to deal with man s sin f. This the way God had taught Adam and Eve (1) the animal(s) He killed to cover their nakedness as their blood covered their sin g. This sacrifice represented to God their gratitude to Him for saving them; represented a form of confession of sin and spiritual worship 2. Smelled the soothing aroma a. Best understood as a smell of satisfaction 3. This is the first mention of seasons 4. With a canopy you would have the same weather all over the world 5. There would be no seasons 6. But what about Genesis 1:14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; 3 6
a. Seasons d[eam mow`ed {mo-ade'} or d[emo mo`ed {mo-ade'} or (fem.) hd'['am mow`adah (2 Chr 8:13) {mo-aw-daw'} b. Meaning: 1) appointed place, appointed time, appointed meeting, appointed sign or signal 7. Could it be that prior to the flood the earth s axis was at 0 but that after the flood it had changed to 23.5 III. Lessons to learn A. Noah learned that sacrifice always proceeds spiritual success 1. Noah lost everything that he had that he didn t take into the ark with him 2. His friends and other family members, coworkers and acquaintances all died 3. Noah had to start a whole new civilization with just he and his family 4. Imagine that for a moment B. God s will made up of three parts 1. What 2. How 3. When 4. Examples: a. Abraham and Sarah b. Moses c. Noah [8:13-16] 4 6
(1) Leave the ark when its God s will 5. Do circumstances tell us what is God s will a. No b. They confirm God s will at times c. Can Satan control circumstances (1) Consider story of Job d. Consider David and Saul (1) In the cave (2) In Saul s camp e. Here the circumstances indicated that Noah should leave the ark on the 1 st day of the year f. But Noah waited until God instructed him to leave 6. We must leqrn to ask God for patience during difficult times of waiting C. Noah s life was all about two floods 1. The first was a flood of evil into his world as tidal wave after tidal wave of wickedness washed over humanity, until the number of those who still loved God and chose to serve Him dwindled down to eight 2. Second there was a flood of judgment and clensing, which destroyed the world Noah once knew and wiped out everything that had been built or established 3. Why did Noah s wife, three sons and three daughters in law follow Noah? a. Their belief in God 5 6
b. Their belief in Noah s God c. Their commitment to their father s faith d. Real spiritual leaders attract their followers by the strength of their God in them 6 6
