Define Motif: What does the story of Taborlin the Great show you about the world these characters live in and their beliefs? What happened to Carter and his horse? What do we learn about the inn-keeper in this section? What are your thoughts about the book thus far? Do you like it? Hate it? Why?

4 Chapter Two: A Beautiful Day All of Chapter 2 Due: 10/17/11 Give one example of personification from the story. The second paragraph of this chapter is designed to be both humorous and ironic. Define irony and explain how this is an example of it. What is a scribe? The robbery is very civilized, though it is hinted that many are not even in the world of the story. What does this show about the state of the world and what does the robbery reveal about Chronicler s character? In what ways did Chronicler outsmart the thieves?

5 Chapter Three: Wood and Word Beginning of the chapter thru and no one minded in the least. Due: 10/18/11 What is one simile that is used in this chapter? Why do you think Kote named his sword Folly and is having it mounted on the wall? (It doesn t say explicitly, this is your educated guess based on what you have read.) What metaphor does Kote use to describe the sword? The song the children sing is about the Chandrian. What does it make you think/feel about them?

What does this make you think about the innkeeper? How is the author foreshadowing what may happen in the story through his hints about the innkeeper s past? What is Bast s relationship with Kote? 7 Chapter Four: Halfway to Newarre All of Chapter 4 Due: 10/20/11 In what ways do we see the motif of songs and legends repeated in this chapter? What does this chapter show us about Chronicler s character? What does this chapter show us about Kote s character?

8 Chapter Five: Notes All of Chapter 5 Due: 10/21/11 What does this chapter reveal about Bast s character? What does Bast s song tell us about Kote? What are the biggest questions/mysteries the book has raised for you so far? What do you most want to know that it hasn t revealed yet?

9 Chapter Six: The Price of Remembering & Chapter 7: Of Beginnings and the Names of Things All of Chapters 6 & 7 Due: 10/24/11 Chapter 6: Kote s inn is in the town of Newarre. When Chronicler asks where he is, Kote tells him he is in the middle of Newarre. What did the author make the name of the town sound like, and why did he make it sound like that? Quote a line in which Kote is being sarcastic. Kote says I was disappointed to learn that dragons didn t exist. That s a hard lesson for a boy to learn. This line deals with the disillusionment of children, and a lesson we all have to learn as we grow up. This lesson is a theme in this story. What lesson is it? We see the motif of stories, legends, and myths and their creation again in this chapter, but with an interesting twist. What does Kvothe say when chronicler tells him some people think he is a myth? How does Chronicler convince Kvothe to tell his story? What emotions do we see Kote go through and which ones most powerfully affected you as a reader?

10 Chapter 7: Name 3 beginnings that this chapter talks about and how they set the tone for the beginning of Kvothe s story. Why is it so important to Kvothe that Chronicler get his story exactly right? Kvothe s father told him that his name means to know. This is significant throughout the story. At this point, what do you think is significant about it? This chapter marks the end of the frame story. The fact that Kvothe is telling his own story as opposed to an omniscient narrator telling it is very important. What does this change for us as a reader? What are your thoughts about the book thus far? Do you like it? Hate it? Why?
