3 Masking pain is known as Repression Repression - is a thought, feeling, or emotion that is NOT expressed. Often there is denial that the thought, feeling, or emotion even exists.

4 Negative Impacts of Repression Unawareness of our emotions prevents us from recognizing how it can be affecting & harming us & others. Distorts our observations of the moment Distorts our memories of the past Distorts our expectations of the future

5 Repression to Depression Research has proven that repression is a major cause of DEPRESSION 1) Major Depression is known as the most common mental health illness world-wide 2) 1 out of 6 people in the U.S. will suffer with clinical Depression in their lifetime 3) Women are twice as likely to develop Major Depression

6 Suicide Statistics 35,000 people commit suicide yearly 2,750 monthly / 634 weekly / 90 daily From the suicide rate among U.S. citizens between the ages of rose 30% More Americans now die from suicide than from car accidents (according to the Center for Disease Control) 68% of suicides are among males. (hold in) Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds. (<coping skills) 40% of all suicides are among the elderly.

7 Suicidal Ideation Suicidal thoughts, also known as suicidal ideation are thoughts about how to kill oneself, which can range from a fleeting consideration to a detailed plan and does not include the final act. The majority of people who experience suicidal ideation do not carry it through. Some may, however, make suicidal attempts. Most suicidal ideations can be deliberately planned to fail or be discovered, as a means of crying out for help.

But thou shalt have a perfect and a just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. ~Deuteronomy 25:13-15 (KJV)

11 Living Without Limits Why don t we take appropriate care of ourselves? Why are so many Christians, along with the rest of our culture 1) Frantic 2) Exhausted 3) Over loaded 4) Hurried

12 Living Without Limits Few Christians make the connection between love of self and love of others. Self care is never a selfish act it is simply good stewardship of the only gift you have, the gift you were put on earth to offer to others. Taking care of yourself IS taking care of others

13 What does scripture say? Deuteronomy 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

15 Isaiah 58:13-14 (MSG) If you watch your step on the Sabbath an don t use my holy day for personal advantage, if you treat the Sabbath as a day of joy, God s holy day as a celebration, If you honor it by refusing business as usual, making money, running here and there then you ll be free to enjoy GOD! Oh, I ll make you ride high and soar above it all

16 Emotional REST 1 Kings 19:1-8 In our lives we experience the same kinds of emotions that overwhelmed Elijah after he battled the chiefs of Baal on Mount Carmel. No doubt he felt fear, exhilaration, terror, confidence, panic, delight, & doubt all mixed together. No wonder he felt like he wanted to die. Yet the first thing that Yahweh does for him is put him to sleep. à
