The Newsletter of Congregation Beth Jacob CONGREGATION BETH JACOB P.O. Box 3284 Plymouth, MA How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel! MARCH/APRIL 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Shalom All!! I m writing this on the eve of a much anticipated blizzard, which is supposed to start tomorrow morning and dump about a foot of snow on the South Shore. So, it seems appropriate that I should be looking toward the Spring in this message! 5777 HOLIDAYS Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the dates listed. March 12 Purim April 11th Passover Some of my favorite holidays are in March and April! We have Purim coming up in March, with the Megillah reading and costumes and hamentaschen! This is yet another instance in which Judaism faced down and survived the worst sort of anti-semitism, and another example of the bravery of Jews like Mordecai and Esther, who refused to be intimidated! Then of course, there is Passover - the remembrance of our slavery in Egypt and ultimately, our freedom! In stark contrast is Yom Hashoah, where we remember and mourn the 6 million Jews, who along with many other minorities, could not be saved from hatred and bigotry. Clearly, there is always work for us to do in the world to make it a better place! And while we may never completely rid ourselves of hate, we can at least do our best to contain it, to fight against it and to minimize the damage it causes. As members of CBJ and as citizens of the world, I hope you all will join in observing these important holidays! Our Temple will be hosting events for all of them, and I look forward to us coming together as a community to recognize all we ve been through already, and how much more there is for us to do!!! Inside this issue: Rabbi s Message 2 Beit Sefer News 3-4 Sisterhood News 5 Onegs, Congrats and Condolences Card Program Info 7-8 Donations 9 Donation Form 10 Yahrzeits Calendar 13 6 Best to you all, Marjorie

MARCH/APRIL 2017 PAGE 2 Rabbi s Message A minor feast in the Jewish calendar, Purim is highlighted by the reading of a special scroll, called the Megillah, which narrates the ancient Purim story. The Megillah is identical with the Biblical Book of Esther. The key protagonists in the story are, on the one side, Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, and on the other side, Haman, who has been appointed prime minister of Persia. The king of the realm is a weak-willed character who time-and-again is moved to action by events that are incidental to the main issues. Vashti, the former queen, is herself removed as a result of one of the king's emotional outbursts. She remains in memory as a silent and silenced witness to the independence of Woman in a time and place ruled by insecure men. It is perhaps ironic that, alone of all the books in the Tanach (the Jewish Scripture), the Scroll of Esther makes no mention of the deity. It is as if God, too, is silent in such a time, when human beings are responsible for working out their own destiny. The figure of Haman has become a conventional stereotype for the anti-semite. According to the narrative, Haman suffers a loss of pride when he is apparently slighted by Mordechai, who does not bow down to the self-important prime minister. Not wishing to seem so petty as to go after Mordechai alone, Haman manufactures a charge against Mordechai's people, that is, against the Jews in general, based upon the observation that they are somehow different. The Jews are targeted for destruction, and are saved through the intervention of Esther. Ironically, one of the keys to Esther's success is her initial concealment of her identity as a Jew. At the turningpoint of the story, it is her disclosure of her true identity to the king that turns the tide against Haman. Like Esther herself, each and every one of us knows what it is like to be part of a minority in a large and diverse realm. In fact, today's America is so diverse, that at one time or another, even members of the so-called majority have probably experienced the feeling of being in a minority. Like Esther, who initially concealed her identity, we too may have accepted the conventional wisdom that "discretion is the better part of valor," and refrained from acknowledging our heritage. In the face of such "discretion," the Book of Esther teaches us that there is a moment of truth, when one must stand up and be counted. As the rabbinic sage Hillel used to say (as quoted in the Mishnah), "If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am for myself alone, what am I?" The Festival of Purim, also known as the Feast of Lots, in this year s civil calendar, begins on Saturday evening, March 11th. Please join us that evening for a Community Purim Celebration in our Synagogue. We will hear the reading of the Megillah; and many of us will come in costume. Watch CBJ s Weekly Update for details!

MARCH/APRIL 2017 PAGE 3 BEIT SEFER NEWS Beit Sefer prepared for Chanukah with a morning of making four separate holiday crafts. The following week PTO and our teachers made the Beit Sefer Chanukah Party. We had a good turnout. The children of Alef and Bet Classes made a small presentation to delight us. We ate yummy latkes, applesauce, bagels, cream cheese and pastries. Then we had face painting, dreidle and Chanukah Bingo games, Pin the Candle on the Menorah, songs and storytelling with the Rabbi. As every child got a gift bag with homemade Chanukah lollipops, chocolate gelt, stickers, erasers, a dreidle, a Jewish theme pencil and a happy face pencil sharpener. We then had four Sundays off (!) for school vacation, a snowstorm cancellation and MLK weekend. We resumed regular classes Sun Jan 22. We have a new regular volunteer at Beit Sefer! Shoshana York who lives in Carver has been coming every Sunday since mid- December. Shoshana was born and raised in Israel. She was the Educational Director for Shirat Hayam in Marshfield for many years. We are truly blessed to have her with us reinforcing our Beit Sefer students with their introduction to the Hebrew letters and language. She really enjoys being a part of our school program. On Feb 12 for Tu B'Shevat/ The Birthday of the Trees- all classes were visited by volunteer storyteller Jackie Winokur. She read to the students various age appropriate themed literature highlighting nature and our relationship with the environment as partners with God in Tikkun Olam /completing creation and fixing our world. Also everyone enjoyed a messy time making pine cone bird feeders to hang in our backyard trees for the hungry winter birds. In March we will be learning more about Mitzvot and Purim. We have planned to attend the terrific Purim Shpiel and Carnival at Cong. Sha'aray Shalom in Hingham Sunday March 12. The weeks following teachers will be instructing classes about Israel and also Passover. There is a lot of learning going on in all classes about different Judaic subjects. Be sure to ask your children what they have been doing in class! Geveret Aharoni Beit Sefer Principal

MARCH/APRIL 2017 PAGE 4 BEIT SEFER CONTINUED Jackie Winokur recently spent time at Beit Sefer and read to the children in all grades. Below are the books she covered. PK/K - Earth Dance by Joanne Ryder. The story invites children to pretend they are earth and invites them to stand and go through a series of gentle, slow, earth-like movements: spinning very slowly, dancing with the moon, whispering like the breeze, etc. It concludes by explaining how the earth is home to people, animals, and plants and expresses the hope that we all treasure and care for the earth. I'm not sure they all "got it" but I think it was fun to move. Gr.1/2 - Dear Children of the Earth by Schim Schimmel. This story is in the form of a letter from "Mother Earth" telling children about herself and reminding them that all earth's creatures are brothers and sisters. It also explains how important it is for all of us to take care of the earth. Even doing little things will help, but most of all, it explains that loving the earth is most important. If we love the earth, we will take care of it. The children seemed to like the book - especially illustrations which are gorgeous. The all understood the message. Gr3/4 - The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. This is a story about The Amazon Rain Forest and how it's creatures appear in a dream to convince a sleeping man who had begun to chop down a Kapok tree, that they all relied on the trees and how devastating it would be if the forest were destroyed. The book has beautiful illustrations and it's lovely to hear the voices of the animals defending and protecting their habitat. The kids seemed to enjoy it. None were familiar with the book which I was pleased about. It's always nice to be " first" with a meaningful reading. However, when kids tell me they already know a story, I explain that reading or hearing it again is like visiting an old friend and how great is that! Gr5/6 - Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg (author of The Polar Express) That was a good connection for the kids since they knew his work a little already. First I shared a really funny book by him called Tuesday, a surreal, wordless book about flying frogs. That prepared them for the book about the environment, Just a Dream. A boy who litters and has no concern for the environment has a dream in which he floats to the future in his bed and sees a world that has been trashed, polluted and destroyed by people who didn't care for the environment. When he awakens it is to new concern and appreciation for the importance of protecting our environment. The kids were great - insightful, involved, responsive.

MARCH/APRIL 2017 PAGE 5 SISTERHOOD NEWS Sisterhood recently held a Tu B shavet Seder for 15 members. Every April the girls are required to attend Rainbow Sunday at the church of the Worthy Advisor. Instead of attending church on Sunday, April 9th, the girls will be joining Congregation Beth Jacob for the evening on April 87h. Being a member of Rainbow gives girls the power of knowledge to know right from wrong and to be able make decisions by using their head and their heart instead of peer pressure. Rainbow Girls experience the joy of giving through volunteering in their community or on a nation-wide assignment. Most importantly, the confidence and leadership skills taught through Rainbow will continue to open doors for each girl through college and her career. If you know a girl who is 8 20 years old who may want to develop Leadership skills and give back to the community through community service, please contact Robin Kirby at The Congregation sends a hearty Mazel Tov to... I would like to keep the issues of the TENT coming out the last week of the month prior to the TENT issue ie. January/ February should be out the last week of December so congregants that wish to attend upcoming events know of them in advance. Thank you in advance for your understanding, Robin Kirby, Editor
