He created plants and animals to live in that world, and He created people to take care of the world and to have fellowship with Him. Then the devil brought evil into God s perfect world. 1. Who Is the Devil? When God created the world, He created animals and people to live in the world. He also created spiritual beings that we call angels. Satan was one of the angels. Because of pride, Satan became jealous of God. He wanted to make himself greater than God. To punish this angel, God cast him out of heaven. We know him as the devil, or Satan. The name Satan means enemy. BFP: 280, The First Sin Read Genesis 2:8,9. In the middle of the Garden of Eden, God placed two special trees the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God made a covenant with His created people. He commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowlege of good and evil. Adam could eat from any other tree, except that one. When the devil was cast out of heaven, he came to earth to destroy the perfect world God had created, and to destroy the special covenant relationship God had with people. Satan lied to Eve to make her disobey God. He said, You will not die if you eat of this tree. God told you not to eat this fruit because He doesn t want you to become like Him. Eve had to make a choice. She could choose to believe God and obey Him, or she could choose to believe the devil and disobey God. Do you know what Eve chose to do? Eve chose to believe the devil. She disobeyed God and ate the fruit. Then she gave some of the fruit to Adam. Both chose to disobey God. That was the very first sin committed. BFP: 29, Original Sin The word sin means disobedience. Adam and Eve were disobedient when they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We call this first sin original sin. Since then, all people are born with a tendency to sin. Have you ever disobeyed? If so, you know what sin is. Were you punished for your disobedience? Adam and Eve were the first people to be disobedient and the first people to be punished. God punished Adam and Eve by sending them out of the Garden and putting a curse on the ground. This story has a happy ending. God also put a curse on the serpent, but he also made a promise to Adam and Eve. He said that someday someone would come to destroy the devil and take our punishment for us. He would bring us eternal life. This someone would be God s Son, Jesus. BFP: 27, 320, 347
