Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36. Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38. This is the first and great commandment. 39. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

2 II. LIVING OUT THE FIRST COMMANDMENT (Romans 12:1-2) 1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. III. LIVING OUT THE SECOND COMMANDMENT (Romans 13:8-10) 8. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

3 New International Version (NIV) I. THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS (Matthew 22:35-40) 35. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36. Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37. Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38. This is the first and greatest commandment. 39. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

4 II. LIVING OUT THE FIRST COMMANDMENT (Romans 12:1-2) 1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God this is your true and proper worship. 2. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. III. LIVING OUT THE SECOND COMMANDMENT (Romans 13:8-10) 8. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9. The commandments, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet, and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself. 10. Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the

5 fulfillment of the law. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. The Lord is always ready to answer our questions if we are willing to obey (Matthew 22:35). 2. People in every age have thought that some laws are more important than others. They forget that whenever they break any law, they are guilty before God (Matthew 22:36; James 2:10). 3. As we grow in love for God, our relationship with Him and with others will flourish (Matthew 22:37-40). 4. We should respond to God s mercy with surrender, thanksgiving, and worship (Romans 12:1). 5. We must choose who will be in control of our lives, the world or the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:2). 6. We can never repay God s love, but we can pay it forward

6 to others (Romans 13:8). 7. We learn to love others as we understand that God values their lives as He does ours (Romans 13:9). 8. When we consider God s love for us, we should go beyond what is required by law (Romans 13:10). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
