Lesson Text: Acts 9:10-20 King James Version (KJV) I. THE ROLE OF ANANIAS (Acts 9:10-14) 10. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord. 11. And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, 12. And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. 13. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: 14. And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. II. THE COMMISSION OF SAUL (Acts 9:15-20)
15. But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16. For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name s sake. 17. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. 19. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. 20. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. New International Version (NIV) I. THE ROLE OF ANANIAS (Acts 9:10-14)
10. In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, Ananias! Yes, Lord, he answered. 11. The Lord told him, Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight. 13. Lord, Ananias answered, I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name. II. THE COMMISSION OF SAUL (Acts 9:15-20) 15. But the Lord said to Ananias, Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name. 17. Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus,
who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. 18. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19. and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. We need to be spiritually ready to respond when God calls us to do a special task (Acts 9:10-12). 2. Every believer should be encouraged in knowing that God can overrule all the feeble attempts of men to stop the gospel message (Acts 9:13-14). 3. When God chose you to be one of His followers, He had a definite purpose in mind (Acts 9:15-16).
4. One of the first results of salvation is realizing our dependence on more mature believers for guidance (Acts 9:17-19). 5. New faith is demonstrated by an eagerness to share Christ with others (Acts 9:20). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
