Isaiah Tnight we finish First Isaiah and the stry f Hezekiah At the end f 36, the Assyrian cmmander has made his threats against Hezekiah s representatives He declares that the city will be emptied f it s peple And he induces a panicked silence amng the city Nw the scene mves t Hezekiah himself Is. 37:1 And when King Hezekiah heard it, he tre his clthes, cvered himself with sackclth and entered the huse f the LORD. Is. 37:2 Then he sent Eliakim wh was ver the husehld with Shebna the scribe and the elders f the priests, cvered with sackclth, t Isaiah the prphet, the sn f Amz. Is. 37:3 They said t him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day f distress, rebuke and rejectin; fr children have cme t birth, and there is n strength t deliver. Is. 37:4 Perhaps the LORD yur Gd will hear the wrds f Rabshakeh, whm his master the king f Assyria has sent t reprach the living Gd, and will rebuke the wrds which the LORD yur Gd has heard. Therefre, ffer a prayer fr the remnant that is left. Is. 37:5 S the servants f King Hezekiah came t Isaiah. Is. 37:6 Isaiah said t them, Thus yu shall say t yur master, Thus says the LORD, D nt be afraid because f the wrds that yu have heard, with which the servants f the king f Assyria have blasphemed Me. Is. 37:7 Behld, I will put a spirit in him s that he will hear a rumr and return t his wn land. And I will make him fall by the swrd in his wn land. As Hezekiah hears the news frm the wall, he realizes the hpelessness f the situatin His plans t rely n Egypt t repel the Assyrians have bviusly failed And nw the Assyrians are kncking n Jerusalem s walls in anger fr Israel s rebellin As a shw f murning and distress, he tears his clthes and puts n sackclth, a rugh materials intended t reflect murning Then he sends his diplmatic representatives t Isaiah 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 2 Remember, Isaiah was the ne wh warned the natin nt t seek an alliance with Egypt r else it wuld cme back against them S Hezekiah nw seems t be ready t admit his mistake and seek Isaiah s cunsel and the Lrd s mercy Hezekiah describes the day as a day f distress, rebuke and rejectin The rebuke and rejectin refers t Gd s apparent rebuke f Hezekiah and rejectin f the peple in their disbedience S we culd call his wrds a statement f repentance Hezekiah asks Isaiah t seek the Lrd s mercy But nt n the basis f the natin s merit But n Gd s willingness t defend His wn hnr befre the Assyrians Isaiah replies that Gd has a plan, s dn t be afraid Gd will send a spirit t the king f Assyria, causing him t think that there is a rebellin back hme Here we see clear evidence f Gd mlding the thughts and desires f men t suit His purpses When the king hears this reprt, he will return t his land and die by the swrd Is. 37:8 Then Rabshakeh returned and fund the king f Assyria fighting against Libnah, fr he had heard that the king had left Lachish. Is. 37:9 When he heard them say cncerning Tirhakah king f Cush, He has cme ut t fight against yu, and when he heard it he sent messengers t Hezekiah, saying, Is. 37:10 Thus yu shall say t Hezekiah king f Judah, D nt let yur Gd in whm yu trust deceive yu, saying, Jerusalem will nt be given int the hand f the king f Assyria. Is. 37:11 Behld, yu have heard what the kings f Assyria have dne t all the lands, destrying them cmpletely. S will yu be spared? Is. 37:12 Did the gds f thse natins which my fathers have destryed deliver them, even Gzan and Haran and Rezeph and the sns f Eden wh were in Telassar? Is. 37:13 Where is the king f Hamath, the king f Arpad, the king f the city f Sepharvaim, and f Hena and Ivvah? 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 3 Rabshekah, the cmmander f the army, has t return t the King f Assyria empty handed He wasn t able t persuade the city f Jerusalem t surrender Jerusalem was a majr city with sme f the best defenses in the wrld S the Assyrians didn t lk frward t a siege f the city Rabshekah finds the king f Assyria fighting in the Shephelah Libnah was abut 20 miles suthwest f Jerusalem Lachish was abut 7.5 miles further suthwest S the King has already defeated Lachish and was in the prcess f defeating Libnah when he receives Rabshekah Then in verse 9 we see the mment when the king hears a rumr that draws him away frm the battle at Jerusalem Tirhakah, the king f Ethipia is preparing t attack Nineveh necessitating Sennacherib s return t defend the city There is n such attack cming, and 20 years later the king is assassinated in his temple as he prayed t his pagan gd Meanwhile, as he prepares t leave fr Nineveh, Sennacherib writes his wn letter t Hezekiah attempting t gain his surrender This letter carried by Rabshekah cnveys much the same stry as befre The ther natins std n chance f stpping the Assyrian armies Their gds did them n gd S why shuld the Jewish Gd be any different? He says that their Gd is deceiving them int believing they will survive Is. 37:14 Then Hezekiah tk the letter frm the hand f the messengers and read it, and he went up t the huse f the LORD and spread it ut befre the LORD. Is. 37:15 Hezekiah prayed t the LORD saying, 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 4 Is. 37:16 O LORD f hsts, the Gd f Israel, wh is enthrned abve the cherubim, Yu are the Gd, Yu alne, f all the kingdms f the earth. Yu have made heaven and earth. Is. 37:17 Incline Yur ear, O LORD, and hear; pen Yur eyes, O LORD, and see; and listen t all the wrds f Sennacherib, wh sent them t reprach the living Gd. Is. 37:18 Truly, O LORD, the kings f Assyria have devastated all the cuntries and their lands, Is. 37:19 and have cast their gds int the fire, fr they were nt gds but the wrk f men s hands, wd and stne. S they have destryed them. Is. 37:20 Nw, O LORD ur Gd, deliver us frm his hand that all the kingdms f the earth may knw that Yu alne, LORD, are Gd. Nw t ne f the mst icnic scenes in all f Scripture Many peple wh have never read Isaiah and n little else abut Hezekiah has heard the accunt f hw he takes this letter and spreads it ut befre the Lrd I dare say many Christians have prbably repeated this scene in sme frm as they spread ut an ver due bill, r a medical reprt r sme ther bad news Praying t the Lrd fr His prtectin r prvisin But befre we turn Hezekiah s actins int a ritual, let s examine the specifics f what he des and why First, he ges t the huse f the Lrd, which wuld be the temple His pint is t seek the Lrd, and in that day the Lrd was fund in the temple He spreads the letter ut and seeks the Lrd s interventin It s wrth nting that this is what bth His father and he himself shuld have dne in the first place Instead, they bth sught their wn cunsel withut ever seeking the Lrd s Nw finally Hezekiah turns t the Lrd S the first thing t nte abut Hezekiah s apprach is that he ges befre the Lrd seeking His cunsel and interventin 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 5 The secnd thing is Hezekiah s prayer is a prayer f repentance, nt merely petitin In Isaiah s day, the Jewish peple were under judgment first because an earlier leader, Ahaz, had rejected Isaiah s wrd frm Gd cncerning the Assyrians And nw they were under an even greater judgment because the present leader, Hezekiah, had entered int the cvenant with Egypt Rather than relying n the Lrd He cmpunded the errrs f his father But remember this entire stry frtells the stry f the Jews in the time f Tribulatin The Jewish peple are already in a state f judgment because their leaders rejected Gd s prphet, the Christ, in an earlier day In place f Gd s prphet, they listened t their crrupt leaders wh called Jesus demn-pssessed Later in Tribulatin, the Jews will cmpund this errr by entering int the cvenant with the enemy And this will bring upn them the Tribulatin judgments But there is anther parallel building here as well And we see the beginning f it here in this scene with Hezekiah When the pressure f this greater judgment has it s full effect, the leader returns t the Lrd And in his repentant cnfessin he retreats frm the mistakes f his day and f his father s day In v.16, Hezekiah says that Gd is Gd alne, abve everything created Then Hezekiah asks Gd t incline His ear t listen t the blasphemus wrds f the king f Assyria The king was able t destry s many ther natins and the gds because thse gds were nt real But this nly made the pprtunity all the better fr the Gd f Israel 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 6 The wrld wuld see that all the false gds had failed but the ne true Gd culd then be seen t succeed S Hezekiah calls fr the Lrd t hear his cry This mment mirrrs a similar mment in the future instance The Jews call upn the name f Christ in the last day f Tribulatin Leading t His return Gd prmised this utcme t Israel even back in His Law Lev. 26:40 If they cnfess their iniquity and the iniquity f their frefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they cmmitted against Me, and als in their acting with hstility against Me Lev. 26:41 I als was acting with hstility against them, t bring them int the land f their enemies r if their uncircumcised heart becmes humbled s that they then make amends fr their iniquity, Lev. 26:42 then I will remember My cvenant with Jacb, and I will remember als My cvenant with Isaac, and My cvenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. The call f the Jewish natin isn t merely ne f their wn mistakes, but it als acknwledges the mistakes f the frefathers Much like the scene recrded in Zech 12 at the mment that the Jews in Jerusalem call upn the name f the Lrd in their distress Zech. 12:10 I will pur ut n the huse f David and n the inhabitants f Jerusalem, the Spirit f grace and f supplicatin, s that they will lk n Me whm they have pierced; and they will murn fr Him, as ne murns fr an nly sn, and they will weep bitterly ver Him like the bitter weeping ver a firstbrn. Remember, these Jews are living many millennia after the death f Jesus Yet their natinal cnfessins includes lking back at a past errr cmmitted by their frefathers and cnfessing that sin Even thugh they themselves played n direct rle in the errr 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 7 The parallel is easy t see...the final mment f cnfessin includes a cnfessin f their sins and the sins f their frefathers when they cmmitted a similar ffense against Gd Fr the final prf, cnsider the wrds f the cnfessin spken by the Tribulatin Jews under siege in Jerusalem, captured in Psalm 79 & 80 Psa. 79:5 Hw lng, O LORD? Will Yu be angry frever? Will Yur jealusy burn like fire? Psa. 79:6 Pur ut Yur wrath upn the natins which d nt knw Yu, And upn the kingdms which d nt call upn Yur name. Psa. 79:7 Fr they have devured Jacb And laid waste his habitatin. Psa. 79:8 D nt remember the iniquities f ur frefathers against us; Let Yur cmpassin cme quickly t meet us, Fr we are brught very lw. Psa. 79:9 Help us, O Gd f ur salvatin, fr the glry f Yur name; And deliver us and frgive ur sins fr Yur name s sake. Ntice that these Jews are under Gd s jealus anger And they ask the Lrd t pur His anger ut against the natins that seek t destry them And they ask Him nt t remember the sins f their frefathers And t bring cmpassin instead And ultimately they ask fr salvatin and fr Him t frgive their sins and deliver them These are the wrds spken by the Tribulatin Jews which bring Christ back t rescue them This is the natinal cnfessin Gd described in Leviticus when He said that the natin culd be saved in a future day In this mment in Isaiah, the same kind f cmprehensive cnfessin is happening This is anther link between the events f Hezekiah and the events f the future Israel in Tribulatin S Hezekiah s mdel in this famus scene is ne f appraching Gd and declaring repentance Fllwed by a call fr Gd t defend His name and hnr 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 8 Nw we get the respnse frm Gd Is. 37:21 Then Isaiah the sn f Amz sent wrd t Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the LORD, the Gd f Israel, Because yu have prayed t Me abut Sennacherib king f Assyria, Is. 37:22 this is the wrd that the LORD has spken against him: She has despised yu and mcked yu, The virgin daughter f Zin; She has shaken her head behind yu, The daughter f Jerusalem! Is. 37:23 Whm have yu reprached and blasphemed? And against whm have yu raised yur vice And haughtily lifted up yur eyes? Against the Hly One f Israel! Is. 37:24 Thrugh yur servants yu have reprached the Lrd, And yu have said, With my many charits I came up t the heights f the muntains, T the remtest parts f Lebann; And I cut dwn its tall cedars and its chice cypresses. And I will g t its highest peak, its thickest frest. Is. 37:25 I dug wells and drank waters, And with the sle f my feet I dried up All the rivers f Egypt. Is. 37:26 Have yu nt heard? Lng ag I did it, Frm ancient times I planned it. Nw I have brught it t pass, That yu shuld turn frtified cities int ruinus heaps. Is. 37:27 Therefre their inhabitants were shrt f strength, They were dismayed and put t shame; They were as the vegetatin f the field and as the green herb, As grass n the husetps is scrched befre it is grwn up. Is. 37:28 But I knw yur sitting dwn And yur ging ut and yur cming in And yur raging against Me. Is. 37:29 Because f yur raging against Me And because yur arrgance has cme up t My ears, Therefre I will put My hk in yur nse And My bridle in yur lips, And I will turn yu back by the way which yu came. Is. 37:30 Then this shall be the sign fr yu: yu will eat this year what grws f itself, in the secnd year what springs frm the same, and in the third year sw, reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. Is. 37:31 The surviving remnant f the huse f Judah will again take rt dwnward and bear fruit upward Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 9 Is. 37:32 Fr ut f Jerusalem will g frth a remnant and ut f Munt Zin survivrs. The zeal f the LORD f hsts will perfrm this. Is. 37:33 Therefre, thus says the LORD cncerning the king f Assyria, He will nt cme t this city r sht an arrw there; and he will nt cme befre it with a shield, r thrw up a siege ramp against it. Is. 37:34 By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he will nt cme t this city, declares the LORD. Is. 37:35 Fr I will defend this city t save it fr My wn sake and fr My servant David s sake. Gd answered Hezekiah thrugh Isaiah, the same way Gd tried t instruct Hezekiah the first time The king s plans t take Israel will fail Jerusalem will laugh at him ultimately And he will fail because f his pride in assuming he was the ne accmplishing all his military victries Isaiah lists the many things that the king had taken credit fr, when in reality, Gd was accmplishing the wrk thrugh Assyria In fact, Gd says in v.26 that He had purpsed it frm ancient times Frm the beginning, even S Gd says in v.29 that He will bring punishment upn Assyria And they will return defeated In verse 30, Isaiah gives Judah a sign f cnfidence in Gd s wrd The Jews are eating what grew n it s wn this year and will d the same next year Because the Assyrian invasin disrupted planting in the fields And they will still need t eat what grew n it s wn next year because this year s pprtunity t plant was already gne But in the third year, they culd expect t plant and reap a harvest Meaning life wuld return t nrmal 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 10 In v.32, He prmises that Israel will g frth frm Zin under the Lrd s prtectin Gd prmises that the king will nt even begin his attack n the city He will return the way he came and Gd will defend the city Himself fr the sake f His servant David s sake The reference t David means that Gd s prmise that the thrne f David wuld always have smene seated n it wuldn t fail Until Gd s Sn culd arrive and assume the rle f King, the thrne f David wuld remain in Jerusalem Is. 37:36 Then the angel f the LORD went ut and struck 185,000 in the camp f the Assyrians; and when men arse early in the mrning, behld, all f these were dead. Is. 37:37 S Sennacherib king f Assyria departed and returned hme and lived at Nineveh. Is. 37:38 It came abut as he was wrshiping in the huse f Nisrch his gd, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sns killed him with the swrd; and they escaped int the land f Ararat. And Esarhaddn his sn became king in his place. Nw we see the events we ve tuched upn several times in the chapters leading up t this pint The Lrd Himself destrys the army f Assyria This happens after Sennacherib has departed t defend the rumred attack by Ethipia While he s gne, his army is wiped ut Based n the writings f the ancient Greek histrian, Herdtus, the army was wiped ut by bubnic plague spread by an invading hrde f mice that descended upn the army in its camp With chapter 37 cncluded, Isaiah nw mves backward in time by a few mnths r years t present a prlgue t these events And in these tw chapters, Isaiah creates a transitin t Secnd Isaiah 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 11 The restratin f Israel under Hezekiah is nly temprary, as 38 & 39 will shw Leaving the reader wndering what can Gd d t finally bring Israel int the prmises f restratin and glry Is. 38:1 In thse days Hezekiah became mrtally ill. And Isaiah the prphet the sn f Amz came t him and said t him, Thus says the LORD, Set yur huse in rder, fr yu shall die and nt live. Is. 38:2 Then Hezekiah turned his face t the wall and prayed t the LORD, Is. 38:3 and said, Remember nw, O LORD, I beseech Yu, hw I have walked befre Yu in truth and with a whle heart, and have dne what is gd in Yur sight. And Hezekiah wept bitterly. The pening phrase in thse days mves the narrative ut f the immediate mment f Assyria s siege f Jerusalem but leaves it in abut the same time Hezekiah dies in 686 BC, and in this chapter we ll see that Hezekiah is tld he will live 15 mre years S this wuld have happened in 701 BC The Assyrian siege f Jerusalem als ccurred in 701 BC Bible schlars believe that chapters ccurred a few mnths prir t the events f chapters Hezekiah is dying and Gd declares thrugh Isaiah that this illness will kill Hezekiah Set yur huse in rder meant t create a will and assign a successr because at this pint he has nt children After Isaiah leaves, Hezekiah prays t Gd fr mercy And the basis fr his appeal is his wn gdly walk with Gd 2Chrn as it relates this same stry affirms Hezekiah s selfassessment, that he was a man wh walked clsely with Gd even mre s than his father David. Is. 38:4 Then the wrd f the LORD came t Isaiah, saying, Is. 38:5 G and say t Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the Gd f yur father David, I have heard yur prayer, I have seen yur tears; behld, I will add fifteen years t yur life. Is. 38:6 I will deliver yu and this city frm the hand f the king f Assyria; and I will defend this city Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 12 Is. 38:7 This shall be the sign t yu frm the LORD, that the LORD will d this thing that He has spken: Is. 38:8 Behld, I will cause the shadw n the stairway, which has gne dwn with the sun n the stairway f Ahaz, t g back ten steps. S the sun s shadw went back ten steps n the stairway n which it had gne dwn. The Lrd s respnse is cuched in terms f David He is the Gd f yur father David This designatin tells us that the Lrd is answering Hezekiah s prayer n the basis f His prmises t David never t leave the thrne f David empty Fr in thse 15 years, Hezekiah will have sns and the line f David will be cntinued Hezekiah s sn was 12 when he began ruling and Hezekiah died the year after S the sn was brn after this mment Gd als includes the prmise t spare the city frm Assyria This gives further evidence that Gd s purpse in acting is fr the sake f David, the city and ultimately His Sn s future as King But what des it say that Gd said ne thing and then changed after Hezekiah prayed? It seems similar t the way Gd prmpted Abraham t pray after disclsing the fate f Sdm in Gen 18 Why did Gd let Hezekiah knw that he wuld die? The nly lgical answer is s that Hezekiah wuld pray and seek Gd s mercy Mercy that He already intended t grant fr the sake f David Much like He granted Abraham the pprtunity t pray fr the Lt t be spared, which was always t be Gd s plan Then Gd ffers Hezekiah the pprtunity t seek a sign f Gd s faithfulness 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 37-39! 13 Remember that Hezekiah s father Ahaz was given a similar pprtunity t ask fr a sign, but he hypcritically refused t ask fr ne Gd then gave him a sign against him We see the ffer f a sign in 2Kings: 2Kings 20:8 Nw Hezekiah said t Isaiah, What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall g up t the huse f the LORD the third day? 2Kings 20:9 Isaiah said, This shall be the sign t yu frm the LORD, that the LORD will d the thing that He has spken: shall the shadw g frward ten steps r g back ten steps? 2Kings 20:10 S Hezekiah answered, It is easy fr the shadw t decline ten steps; n, but let the shadw turn backward ten steps. 2Kings 20:11 Isaiah the prphet cried t the LORD, and He brught the shadw n the stairway back ten steps by which it had gne dwn n the stairway f Ahaz. S in respnse t his request, Gd mves the shadw backward Which prmpts Hezekiah himself t speak in the text The remaining verses are a psalm recunting the experience Is. 38:9 A writing f Hezekiah king f Judah after his illness and recvery: Is. 38:10 I said, In the middle f my life I am t enter the gates f Shel; I am t be deprived f the rest f my years. Is. 38:11 I said, I will nt see the LORD, The LORD in the land f the living; I will lk n man n mre amng the inhabitants f the wrld. Is. 38:12 Like a shepherd s tent my dwelling is pulled up and remved frm me; As a weaver I rlled up my life. He cuts me ff frm the lm; Frm day until night Yu make an end f me. Is. 38:13 I cmpsed my sul until mrning. Like a lin s He breaks all my bnes, Frm day until night Yu make an end f me. Is. 38:14 Like a swallw, like a crane, s I twitter; I man like a dve; My eyes lk wistfully t the heights; O Lrd, I am ppressed, be my security. Is. 38:15 What shall I say? 14 Isaiah 37-39! 14 Is. 38:16 O Lrd, by these things men live, And in all these is the life f my spirit; O restre me t health and let me live! Is. 38:17 L, fr my wn welfare I had great bitterness; It is Yu wh has kept my sul frm the pit f nthingness, Fr Yu have cast all my sins behind Yur back. Is. 38:18 Fr Shel cannt thank Yu, Death cannt praise Yu; Thse wh g dwn t the pit cannt hpe fr Yur faithfulness. Is. 38:19 It is the living wh give thanks t Yu, as I d tday; A father tells his sns abut Yur faithfulness. Is. 38:20 The LORD will surely save me; S we will play my sngs n stringed instruments All the days f ur life at the huse f the LORD. Is. 38:21 Nw Isaiah had said, Let them take a cake f figs and apply it t the bil, that he may recver. Is. 38:22 Then Hezekiah had said, What is the sign that I shall g up t the huse f the LORD? Chiastic structure It begins with reference t the gates f Shel and srrw at the prspect f shrtened days (v. 10), And it ends with reference t the huse f the Lrd and jy at the prspect f lengthened days (v. 20). The king began by referring t the land f the living being exchanged fr the departed (v. 11) And he ended with reference t the land f the departed exchanged fr the land f the living (vv ). In the middle, he cntrasted Gd's hstility (vv ) with His restratin (vv ). Hezekiah described his cnditin first (vv. 9-14), and then he praised Gd fr His mercy (vv ). Is. 39:1 At that time Merdach-baladan sn f Baladan, king f Babyln, sent letters and a present t Hezekiah, fr he heard that he had been sick and had recvered. Is. 39:2 Hezekiah was pleased, and shwed them all his treasure huse, the silver and the gld and the spices and the precius il and his whle armry and all that was fund in his treasuries.
