Eighteen years!! In that time more than 630,000 Americans have been killed with hand-guns, long-guns and assault weapons. Say that number aloud six hundred and thirty-thousand. By contrast, during the Vietnam War, total American combat deaths were 58,000. In fact, the number of Americans killed by guns in the past 18 years is greater than the combined total number of American combat deaths from WW I (53,500), WW II (292,000), Korea (33,500) and Vietnam (58,000). On an average day, 96 Americans are killed with guns. Many of those are suicides. But about 35 people each day are murdered. 35 each day! We are rightly horrified when an attack like Parkland occurs. 17 lives snuffed out. So why aren t we even more horrified by the equivalent of 2 Parklands occurring every day in this country? I believe this goes well beyond politics, and well beyond the purview of the 2nd amendment. When our children are dying from guns at the rate of 7 every day we must undertake a campaign of prevention just as rigorous as the search for a polio vaccine or a cure for cancer. Eighteen years ago Rabbi Eric Yoffie spoke words which still ring true: First and foremost, we need to see the control of guns not as a political problem but as a solemn religious obligation. Our gun-flooded society has turned weapons into idols, and the worship of idols must be recognized for what it is -- blasphemy. The only appropriate religious response to idolatry is moral outrage. This is no longer just a legal or constitutional question; it is a moral and religious question. The Westchester Board of Rabbis, which I serve as president, is issuing a statement which says, in part, that empowering an agent [such as a politician] who through action or inaction makes it possible for bad people to cause gun deaths is just a fraction of a step away from abetting that action. In other words, if you vote for or donate money to candidates who do not actively support common-sense gun laws, Judaism considers you a fraction of a step away from causing the gun violence which ensues. The actual language is: the Jewish tradition places on its adherents this mandate: to be solemnly cognizant of the ways in which the choices we make as citizens may lead to effects that are incompatible with Jewish law and ethics. We affirm that Jewish women and men are not free to ignore or Continued on page 5.

Notes from Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg The This month I would like to turn my column over to Stessa Peers, our Director of Youth Engagement. Stessa has been a member of TBA most of her life and it has been my privilege to watch her grow, mature, and take her place in the Jewish community at large as well as at TBA. Stessa is a member of our LGBTQ+ taskforce and she would like to share with us some thoughts about preparing for your Passover seders and how to see ourselves in the story: Judaism must be intersectional and must not cast out the different. The great Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn believed that Judaism was an enlightened religion, at a time when it was viewed as archaic. Mendelssohn s one true critique of Judaism was that throughout its history, Judaism has time and again excommunicated those who did not fall into the status quo. Mendelssohn s solution to Judaism being viewed as unenlightened was to do away with excommunication. And we did. Judaism has continued to thrive and reinvent itself since then (the 18th century in case you were wondering!). Now we are again at an impasse. Our world is one of increasing visibility to those once deemed outside of the norm. Our Judaism is more inclusive and more welcoming. This is why Temple Beth Abraham has taken the first steps to become an inclusive place to all! As Cantor Margot spoke about in her January Bulletin, we are working with Keshet, an organization that works for the full equality and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Jews in Jewish life, to create an environment that is welcoming to all. To me, this is the meaning of enlightened Judaism. A Judaism that changes and moves WITH the world around it, just as it always has. As we prepare for the Passover season, we are proud to offer some inclusive materials you can use (or think about) at your Seders this year. For example, an updated 10 Plagues : Today s plagues may be less obvious or dramatic, but are no less insidious... and responsibility for their existence lies on our shoulders. They include: Apathy in the face of evil Brutal torture of the helpless Cruel mockery of the old and the weak Despair of human goodness Envy of the joy of others Falsehood and deception corroding our faith Greedy theft of earth s resources Hatred of learning and culture Instigation of war and aggression Justice delayed, justice denied, justice mocked -Rabbi Rachel Barenblat s Haggadah The LGBTQ+ taskforce includes Allison Fine, Stessa Peers, Jennifer Povman, Ellen Weissman and Diane Werner Osborn. We hope that you have a wonderful Passover filled with family and friends and that you will look at the Passover story with an eye towards the oppressions of the modern world and how you will stand up for what s right. L shalom, Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg 4 PAGE 2

5 9th Annual Living Museum: Our Jewish History is No Longer a Mystery It is amazing to think that 9 years ago, Rabbi Justin and Cantor Mandi started a new tradition at Temple Beth Abraham, the Living Museum. We have exhibited hundreds of heirlooms, we have told many stories, we have enthralled many visitors. This year s crop of 6th graders have chosen an artifact or a group of artifacts that best represent their family, its heritage and traditions. For one glorious morning they bring them to school and share their knowledge, enthusiasm and their precious family heirlooms with our entire TBA Community. We invite you to come and join them on Sunday March 25 between 9:00 11:00am at TBA. We promise you a very interesting morning. The Living Museum is a project of the Education Dept. of The Museum of Jewish Heritage a Living Memorial to the Holocaust, and was developed with a grant from the Covenant Foundation. 9 Passover Service Schedule Passover begins with the first Seder on Friday, March 30, and continues through Friday, April 6, in the Reform tradition or Saturday, April 7, in the Conservative tradition. 1st day, Saturday, March 31 at 9:00 am join us for Conservative Passover service. 8th day, Saturday, April 7 at 9:00 am join us in the Conservative tradition with Yizkor. The Holiday with Four Names Chag ha-matzot The Festival of Unleavened Bread Chag ha-pesach The Festival of the Paschal Offering Chag ha-aviv The Festival of Spring Z man Cherutenu The Season of our Liberation Never Fear! Last Minute Passover Basics are Here! by Rabbi Sally J. Priesand Did you ever notice how Passover, our festival of freedom, is the holiday on which we are least free? So much preparation, so little time, so many restrictions, so few choices. The house must be cleaned, the chametz removed, the matzah bought, the charoset made, the Haggadah read. Tradition clearly states how to conduct our seder in its proper order, what we may eat, both that night and in the week to come - very little freedom here, just discipline. Every year on Erev Pesach I have a friend who calls late in the afternoon to ask me how to arrange the things that go on the seder plate and why. By now, she knows the answers, but the phone call has become tradition, and every year we review together the items on the seder plate: a roasted lamb bone representing the Passover sacrifice; sprigs of parsley symbolizing the renewal of hope that comes with the beginning of spring; bitter herbs (usually horseradish, but some people prefer romaine lettuce), a reminder of the bitterness of slavery; charoset, a special mixture of apples, nuts, cinnamon and wine, symbolizing the mortar used by our ancestors to make bricks for Pharaoh; a hard-boiled egg, representing the festival offering, a symbol of life itself. Our checklist also includes holiday candles, three matzot specially covered, salt water, enough wine (or grape juice) for everyone to drink four cups, a Haggadah for everyone present and a cup for Elijah. Some people also place a pillow on each chair for reclining and have available a cup, basin and towel for washing. Although the seder has its order, we are encouraged to add something new from year to year. Here are some suggestions: When you invite your seder guests, ask each one to bring with them a brief quotation about freedom. During the seder, pause every now and then, and ask people to share their quotes and explain why they were chosen. Set aside a Matzah of Hope for those who are hungry and homeless in your community. Pass a tzedakah box among your seder participants and decide together where to contribute the funds. Remember the many contributions made by Jewish women to the redemption of our people. Put a cup for Miriam, Moses and Aaron s sister, on your seder table. Fill it with water and reflect on the miraculous well that accompanied our ancestors as they wandered in the wilderness. Assign one guest ahead of time to research the meaning of Miriam s cup. Before drinking the fourth cup of wine, pour a drop from Elijah s cup into the cup of every person present. Do this as a reminder that we must be Elijah and act in ways that will bring about the Messianic Age. Now relax and have a wonderful Passover! Helpful Information for a Joyous Passover On the eve of the fourteenth of Nissan, the first Seder night, Jews all over the world assemble with family members and friends in homes or public places to commemorate the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage over thirty-two hundred years ago. The Seder ceremony is comprised of many elements of historical narration and ritual, special foods and hymns. They follow one another in a certain order - in fact, the word Seder means order - just as they have for hundreds of years. It s easy for one or more members of the household to conduct the Seder, and for everyone at the table to participate, because everything to be done and to be said is compiled in one book, the Haggadah. With a little preparation, anyone can lead a Seder! 4 PAGE 9

10 A Passover Thought from Our LGBTQ+ Taskforce This year we are slaves; next year may we be free. In every generation, we find ourselves in narrow places (Mitzrayim Egypt) political oppression, environmental crisis, personal struggles to live up to our own best selves. The seder ritual is a brilliant orchestration of an extended conversation around the central themes of memory and justice and liberation. To which, let us add, whoever expands the doing of the work of tikkun, healing of myself and of society is even more praiseworthy. As another rabbinic statement puts it, lo ha midrash ha-ikkar, ela ha-ma aseh: the telling alone is not enough; it must lead us to act in the world. ( The Telling is Not Enough, an essay published in the Torah Queeries series.) Every year, Jews gather at seder tables around the world to remember, retell, and reconnect with the story of our collective redemption. Passover compels us to ask ourselves how we are moving out of Mitzrayim, the narrow straits of oppression and brokenness that still mar our world, and toward liberation in our lives today. At Passover, it is the family s responsibility to retell the story, to inspire each new generation to accept the task of living out our values, of remembering that we were once strangers, and therein find an obligation to those on the margins of our own societies. The LGBTQ+ Taskforce would like to suggest that at your seder table this year when asking the traditional 4 questions you also ask these: WHO ARE THE FOUR ALLIES? WHICH ONE ARE YOU? 1. The ally who asks what LGBTQ means: The first step to taking bold action and advocating on behalf of others is to approach with curiosity, humility, and openness. An ally is open to learning new things and challenging their own assumptions. 2. The ally who stands up for a friend: The lives of people we care about, our friends, family, and colleagues can be powerful catalysts for action. 3. The ally who speaks up about equality: When we speak out against injustice because it s the right thing to do, regardless if someone we know and care about is affected, we act on behalf of our core values. 4. The ally who comes out as an advocate to move equality forward: As allies, we are often insulated from the vulnerabilities that LGBTQ people face in the world. However, coming out publicly as an ally can also mean taking a risk on behalf of the values and people we care about. Passover Vocabulary Hametz is dough that has not been prepared according to the rules of Passover, or any food that has come in contact with Hametz. Dishes and utensils that have touched Hametz become hametzdik and should not be used during Passover. Hametz is also known as leavened bread. Bedikat Hametz (Removal of Leaven) On the night before Passover, the family does a formal search to find any stray crumbs hidden in corners or cabinets, some of which will be deposited deliberately so that they may be found. Kids love this! Traditionally, we use a candle for light, but you might substitute a flashlight. The crumbs are swept with a feather into a little bundle, and on the next morning all is burnt. The short prayers, which are to be recited as part of these rituals, may be found at the beginning of any Haggadah. Mechirat Hametz (Selling One s Hametz) Observance of Passover is more than avoiding the eating of bread. Full observance also includes, the removal from our homes of all leavened food (Hametz) as well as all dishes and utensils that have been connected with Hametz during the rest of the year. That s a big job! In order to lessen the hardship, the Rabbis decreed that all non-passover items may remain in one isolated spot in your home (e.g. a closet, the basement), as long as it passes out of your ownership. From this arises the custom of selling Hametz. To avoid having hametz in your possession during Passover, please fill out the Sale of Hametz form below and return it to the office so that Rabbi Holtz can arrange this for you. Mechirat Hametz (Selling One s Hametz) I herby authorize Rabbi David Holtz to dispose of all hametz that may be in my possession wherever it may be at home, place of business, or elsewhere in accordance with the requirements of Jewish Law as incorporated in this special contract for the Sale of Hametz. home address, city, state, zip business address, city, state, zip signature date 4 PAGE 10

11 Senior Movies at Jacob Burns Your Member Services Committee is hard at work. We would like to get a group of people together to go to the Senior Movie Matinee Jewish Film Festival at Jacob Burns. It will be on Wednesday, March 21 at 1:00. The price of the film is $8.00 including refreshments following the film. We are going to try to arrange rides for everyone interested. These tickets sell out fast so please let the office know as soon as possible if you are interested. You will have a choice of either: A QUIET HEART (92 MIN.) Naomi, a concert pianist from Tel Aviv who is overwhelmed by the expectations of her parents and her colleagues, seeks anonymity and solitude in Jerusalem, a city increasingly dominated by religious fanaticism. Despite her intentions to be alone, she makes two unexpected connections one with a musically gifted Ultra-Orthodox boy who lives in her building, and the other with a charismatic Italian monk and organist. While these relationships allow Naomi to reconnect with her love of music, she becomes a target in her new community. Faced with escalating isolation and violence, Naomi must learn to use music as a bridge to overcome towering religious barriers. In Hebrew/English. or BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY (90 MIN.) Hedy Lamarr was hailed as the world s most beautiful woman (Louis B. Mayer). However, that was only the mask that tragically obscured her astounding true inventive genius. This documentary explores Lamarr s life, which included escaping a loveless marriage in Austria on the eve of Nazi Germany s conquest of her nation to a new career in Hollywood. Her intellectual contributions were denied their due during World War II and only after years of career and personal decline would Lamarr understand that her staggering aptitude created brilliant engineering concepts which revolutionized telecommunications. In English. Tickets must be reserved in advance. When you RSVP to the office please let them know which movie you d like to see. Kindly RSVP by Monday, March 5.
