Message from our President It is so fitting that we have chosen to honor Sonia and Irving as this years Ad Journal honorees. They have contributed in so many ways to the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B nai Israel. They are long time caring and supportive members who are actively involved in life here at the Center. Irving, who serves as Vice President on our Board, has been the chairperson of our annual Israel Bond Drive, Kol Nidre Campaign and of course the yearly Ad Journal. When Irving takes on a project he does it with his whole heart and soul and failure is not an option to him. As Irving will tell you these fundraising projects could not be accomplished without the devotion of his beloved Sonia. Sonia is the one who makes sure Irving remembers to make the needed phone calls he has talked about doing or who he still needs to go talk to for that promised pledge. Even when Sonia and Irving take off for Florida in the winter there are many phone calls to the Center to make sure the letters have gone out for the Ad Journal and that funds have begun to come in. They may be out of town, but their concerns are still here at the Center in Fair Lawn. It is thanks to Irving s continual drive all these years along with Sonia s input that the Center has been able to raise the funds it has throughout the years. On behalf of your fellow congregants I want to express our heartfelt appreciation to both of you for all you have done throughout the years for the FLJC/CBI. With your generous hearts and ever watchful eyes you have made the Center a stronger, healthier and more viable place. You both are truly deserving of the honor being bestowed upon you. Yasher Koach to both of you. All the Best, Linda Ayes President

Message from our Rabbi How appropriate that we are honoring Irving and Sonia Sklaver this year as our Dinner Dance honorees! Whenever I read or hear the Talmudic statement, and it is quoted often, (Shevuot 39a), Kol yisrael arevim zeh bazeh All Jews are responsible for each other, I think of the Sklavers. They indicate how closely tied together we all are. When we apply those words to the Sklavers we know that this statement is an essential part of who and what they are. They know that they need to proactively work to help other Jews. They know that they can be models of the behavior that creates and sustains a community with ties to the past, to the present and insures the future. I can imagine an ideal Jewish community if everyone followed their example. They have helped to preserve the memory of the Holocaust in many ways for our community. They support and attend Shabbat services, and so many of our programs. Irving is involved in the governance of the synagogue. They are so closely tied to all that we do, I wish others would follow their example of being active in our synagogue. They also personify another phrase from our tradition, derech eretz, the proper way to conduct oneself with dignity, and honesty, and with true concern for those around them. We could all learn from them about ways to act, greeting others warmly with care. They speak with heartfelt integrity. In addition of course is all the work that Irving does raising the funds that are necessary for this synagogue to function, to be a center of learning, of prayer and of acts of loving kindness. I understand that it can be difficult for some people to ask for a donation. But Irving s requests for funds to insure the wellbeing of the Synagogue or to support Israel through Israel Bonds on the High Holidays are simply an extension of his deeply felt care for the congregation, our community and Israel. He understands that if we are to thrive and be a vibrant synagogue there must be sufficient operating funds for us to succeed. I cannot image what the synagogue would be like without his efforts. He directed our fund raising for so many years. To some fund raising is an unpleasant but necessary task. To Irving it is an expression of love. I thank them both for their friendship and all their devotion and care for our congregation. Rabbi Ronald Roth

Message from our Cantor Dear FLJC Family, It is my honor to share words of tribute at this time of our sixtieth annual dinner dance in recognition of Irving and Sonia Sklaver. I have of course known the Sklavers a considerably shorter time than many of you who have seen them serve this community selflessly for nearly half a century. It is therefore a humbling experience to share my own thoughts, seeing as though I have known them only for seven years since my arrival in Fair Lawn. Nonetheless, please indulge me as I share my perspective and reflections based on far fewer, yet, equally important years. Our liturgy each Shabbat includes a prayer praising those who have given generously to the synagogue community, helping us to do our holy work. The text praises those who have devoted themselves to the needs of the Kehillah and have given funds for the wine for Kiddush and candles of havdalah. While we know of their collective leadership in ensuring the synagogue s financial viability, it is noteworthy that the text mentions wine and candles. The wine of course symbolizes joy in our tradition while the candles intimate the gifts of our souls, the neshama that can never truly be touched. When I think of Irving and Sonia, I am always inspired by their sense of joy and their ability to greet each and every person with a smile and warm welcome. Their neshama, linked together over 60 years of marriage, are a model to us to grow spiritually and give of ourselves in every way possible. That unique neshama is also the driving force which allows them to both be encouraging and open to so many new things that we try to implement to grow and sustain our synagogue community. They both take great pride in our collective accomplishments, whether it be through participation by the choir, chanting of the young people on the bima, the cacophony of Shir Joy Two, or just trying out new and innovative programs. Their openness and encouragement offers us all a wonderful example of how to approach synagogue life and how to be true partners with the community and its leadership. Mostly, they impress us all with their mentschlichkeit, a word that truly embodies how they conduct themselves in support of each other, our shul and the greater Jewish community. They epitomize the words of Pirke Avoth, greet each person with a cheerful countenance. I am truly honored to serve a congregation where they are members and I am only more honored to call them my friends. May they grow from strength to strength, blessed with good health and all of God s blessings. Bshalom Cantor Eric L Wasser

Message from our Rabbi Emeritus For many years I have had the pleasure of sitting next to my dear friend Irving Sklaver on the Bima. Irving praised the honorees who deserved the kavod. However it was Irving who helped to make such successful events possible. Irving made everyone else look good, and he was the hidden hero. And now it's Irving's time to shine. Irving and his lovely wife Sonia managed to live through the most tragic years in our history. They never lost faith in the Jewish community and its ability to survive and thrive once again. Together with their loving family and trusting friends they helped to re-build Jewish life in a congenial welcoming environment. Kol Hakavod to two special people and to the Center for recognizing a gem. Simon Glustrom, Rabbi Emeritus Message from our Cantor Emeritus Not every man can say this about another and I say it to you with all my heart, today and always: It is an hoit is with my greatest pleasure to extend to you, Sonia and Irving, my heartiest Mazal- Tov on this wonderful honor. You are so richly deserving of this tribute. I have known you for many many years and you continually devote your time and resources to the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B nai Israel. Your wisdom, generosity and dedication to the Shul and to Yiddishkeit has been an inspiration to all of us. You have skillfully served on our boards and committees, serving as a leader and chairman, giving your tireless efforts to the many causes and campaigns throughout the years. Your tremendous work has set a pace that will not be easy to fill as you step down and hand over the reigns to the next generation. Sonia and Irving, on a more personal level, your friendship over the many years has been a source of strength and warmth for me and my family. You have shared in our simchas and have been a close and trusting friend. You have always inspired me in every way and I am grateful for knowing you for all these years. nor to know you and to be considered your friend. You have always been more than a friend to me.you are like the brother I lost long ago, you are my fellow survivor, a true mensch in every way and you have everyone s best interest at heart over your own. Irving, you set a new standard for the words, generous, giving from the heart and genuine kindness. It is such an honor to know you and to be a part of your life. Lena and I join everyone in wishing you, Sonia and Irving, our deepest congratulations and may G-d give you much continued health and happiness for many many years to come. Mazel-Tov! Your friend, Max Rubin Cantor Emeritus

Message from our Executive Director To my Dear Friends Sonia & Irving: It has been my pleasure to truly get to know Sonia and Irving Sklaver over the past eighteen years of working at the Fair Lawn Jewish Center. Sonia is one of the kindest and most well respected women I have ever known. She is, however, the driving force behind all of Irving s good deeds and wise decisions. In her own quiet way, she guides Irving, while remaining in the background, never seeking recognition for any of her exceptional counsel. Irving and I have worked together on Fundraising for the Center for many years. You will never find a more devoted and dedicated member of the congregation, so willing to give of himself and his time. He is relentless in his overwhelming desire to see our Center succeed financially, and he will never stop asking for contributions, whether they are for our Kol Nidre Campaign, of which he is the Chairman, or the Israel Bonds Campaign, which he also Chairs. Both of these endeavors are extremely successful only due to Irving s commitment and fortitude. In addition, Irving always exceeds our goals when it comes time for our Annual Ad Journal. He personally calls any member that he feels should be contributing their fair share. Failure is not a word that Irving will ever accept, and we are all the recipients of his valiant and outstanding efforts. It is truly a great pleasure for me to join in congratulating Sonia and Irving, such worthy honorees of this year s Ad Journal/Dinner Dance. May we all strive to learn by example, and may Sonia and Irving be blessed with many more happy and healthy years together with their wonderful family, sharing their wealth of experience with our future generation. Mazel Tov to the entire Sklaver Family on receiving this most deserving honor, and I look forward to working together with the Sonia and Irving in the future. Kol Hakavod! With Sincerest best wishes, June B. Aranoff Executive Director

Message from our AD Journal Chairman Before we began negotiating the FLJC/CBI merger, I was told that there was a wonderful couple who would be there to welcome us with open arms. Little did I know just how lovely they would be and how important they have become in my synagogue life. Sonia and Irving made the transition into the center one of love and joy for Roni & me as we attend Shabbat services. I have the utmost respect for all the efforts that the Sklavers have made on behalf of the Center and I agreed to take on the role of Ad Journal Chairman even before they were named as the honorees. I wish many more years of health and participation in the Center to this well-deserving couple. I am happy to have had the chance to produce this historic Journal which contains so much love and respect for the Sklavers and raised much needed revenue for the FLJC/CBI. Yasher Koach, Sonia & Irving Jeff Zerowin Ad Journal Chairman

Men s Progress Club There are people in every synagogue that stand out as contributors, as builders, as supporters in their words and actions. In the Fair Lawn Jewish Center / Congregation B nai Israel, that list begins with Irving and Sonia Sklaver. You can tell how much it means for the Sklavers to be involved in our shul. Irv is the first one with his hand stretched out for me to shake whenever I see him on Shabbat, at a Board meeting, or just walking by. And that s not just over the past year because of my position as President of the Men s Progress Club, it s because he is truly happy to see me. Sonia is a bit more reserved, but you can see it in her face, how truly happy she is to be in the synagogue and see the friendly faces that she has come to know. The Men s Progress Club is proud to count Irving Sklaver as a Big Macher, and a long time member in good standing. It has been great to see Irv at many of our regular events, supporting all aspects of our Club s efforts. As the Strong Shoulders of the FLJC/CBI for 70 years, we salute Irving and Sonia Sklaver for all of their efforts. Our shul wouldn t be the same vibrant community without them. 80 For many years, Irving ran a successful printing business and Sonia was a nurse at Barnert Hospital. Irving is a past president of Bnai Brith of Fair Lawn and is Chairman of Israel Bonds. He is also a past President of the Society of Hosht, which provides scholarships for the children and grandchildren of people who come from the town of Hosht. Irving has been the Fair Lawn Jewish Center s premiere fundraiser for many years. He is an expert in this area and has successfully run many Ad Journal and Kol Nidre Campaigns for us. No one can surpass his determination and drive. Even though Irving gets credit for all the successful fundraising projects, he could not do it without the help of his Eyshes Chayil, Sonia. She advises him behind the scenes, and without recognition. Together they make a dynamite team! Sonia & Irving are very proud to be honored by the FLJC/CBI and have thoroughly enjoyed their many years of membership. They truly value the many wonderful and lasting friendships they have made through their association with our Center and wish to thank everyone who participated in making this event so successful.
