1 When is the Sabbath day and how long is it? By Rabbi Simon Altaf Hakohen Written: 20, Jan 2014 Edited: 18 Nov 2016 Terms: Torah These are the first five books in the Bible written by Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy contained in every Christian Bible but vastly ignored by Christians) Since Torah is instruction in Rabbinic understanding it can encompass all the books up to Malachi. Note the Renewed Contract writings are a testimony of the Messiah written by his disciples and other witnesses and not strictly scripture in the same class as the Tanak but only loosely and that they can be used for instruction as long as they do not contradict the Torah and prophets. Tanak (Scriptures from Beresheeth (Genesis) to Dibre Ha Yamim Bet (Second Chronicles) YHWH - The four letters of the sacred name of God. Christendom and their myriads of denominations for far too long have corrupted and misinterpreted our ordinances, commandments and statutes not differentiating between secular and sacred, not separating the clean from the unclean. Woe onto them. We'Yikra (Lev) 10:10 And that you may distinguish between set-apart and not set-apart, and between clean and unclean. Deut 21:5 And the kohenim the sons of Lewi shall come near; for them YHWH Your POWER has chosen to speak to him, and to Benefit in the name of YHWH; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: The Lewites have the final say in a matter of Judgment if they can be found and if not then whoever is the judge in that time a right-ruling Rabbi from the tribe of Yahudah or another tribe can give a decision on the matter The Sabbath Day controversy If we go back to the 4th century CE we very well know that the Lunar Calendar that the present day Ashkenazim Jews use was devised by a predecessor of Elder Hillel. The Sabbath at creation as we understand it today never fell on a Roman day called Saturday every week. Just as the western made Santa Claus or Father Christmas does not exist and is a myth the idea of a creation of Saturday that runs continuously through 1

2 creation is a myth. Let me show you a little why. During Yahoshua ben Nun's time the sun was stopped for a whole day let us see the repercussions for that. Yahoshua 10:13 And the sun stopped acting, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the scroll of Yashar? So the sun stood still in the midst of shamayim, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. So let us assume the following: 1 Day - Sunday 2 Day - Monday 3 Day - Tue 4 Day - Wed 5 Day - Thur 6 Day - Fri 7 Day - Sat Then Yahoshua stops the sun for a whole day. Now let's look at it. We just skipped a whole day so if we assume hypothetically that Yahoshua stopped the sun on a Thursday. 5 Day - Thursday - Sun stopped does not go down for a whole day. This means we just skipped Friday. Then Sun goes down and if we were following a hypothetical Sabbath of Saturday every week from creation now our Saturday Sabbath has been knocked to Sunday as we lost one day and that is simple maths. Let me show you. 5 Day - Thur - Sun Stopped for 12 to 24 hours. (6 Day - Fri) - We just lost Friday. So when sun goes down instead of it being our normal timeline of Friday and Saturday since we lost one day we now have the following; 5 Day - Thursday 6 Day - Lost New 6 Day Saturday becomes Friday as the sun has now gone down. Then we have Saturday which would have now after losing a whole day would really be Sunday. So if you follow the hypothesis of a continual Sabbath from Saturday it does not hold. What was Saturday has just now become Sunday so the cycle broke altogether. However the reality is Saturday was never the original Sabbath. It may have been one of the Sabbaths as the Sabbath was fixed on Hanok's calendar. Today in Hanok's calendar see on our site the priestly Sabbath in the year 2014 is falling every Thursday sunrise to sunset. But at creation there were no other calendars so it fell every week on the 7th day. Note, none of our modern calendars are reliable, the Gregorian calendar loses time. 2

3 The Julian calendar was 365 and one quarter so a day was added in February every four years. It was later found out that they also lost 12 minutes and 14 seconds each year, the reason why at Pope Gregory's time they had lost time. The Julian Calendar of the Romans had fallen behind a whole 10 days so an edict was issued by Pope Gregory XIII to institute the new Calendar in Oct 4, However if you have lost ten days already in time then how would you hold your Saturday theory? The truth is that it does not hold true and Christians who hold to the Sabbath and tell you creation Sabbath remained on Saturday are just acting the fool and educationally ignorant. Even the time of the Gregorian Calendar has to be intercalated to add a day every four years what they term a leap year. So the Gregory Calendar loses time too. In the Julian Calendar the year began March 25 but in the Gregory Calendar it would begin January 1. Note in the Hanok Calendar the year begins March 21 every year so some begin it March 17. Great Britain and its colonies switched to the new calendar in China still uses its own Lunar calendar but for business they switched to the Gregorian calendar in So for good old Britain the switch meant 3 September instantly became 14 September at the issue of the judgment in Parliament. Britain lost 11 whole days. Now if eleven days are lost what happens to the workers pay? What about bank interest on your money, it all vanishes. Do you see the problem? What about the loss of one whole Sabbath in the week? So if you were working and started your job Sept 1, then suddenly the decision is made to switch on Sept 3. Now add 11 new days you have Sept 14 so if you are going to be paid at the end of the month for a full 30 days pay you actually never worked 30 days since you got 11 days as a FREE bonus. The employer is forced to pay you for work you have not done or he can say I will only pay you for 19 days and not 30 days pay since that is all you worked. Many people in the UK rioted at that time demanding give us our eleven days back. Even the common man on the street understood lost time or lost days cannot just vanish into thin air. Let us apply this to our current model. So we have for instance. Wednesday - October 3, 1582 Thursday - October 4, 1582 then Friday October 15, 1582 We lost 10 days So for England it would be September

4 Tues 1, 1752 Wed 2, 1752 Thursday 15, 1752 Now see how this destroys the theory of the lunar Sabbath keepers. Their so called cycle lost 11 days here. So what happens to the so called Saturday only theory? These were the kind of issues that the West had to resolve, it was chaos and mayhem however the switch did occur. George Washington whose old style birthday was Feb 11, 1731 would now be Feb 22, Because of the switch he lost a year to his birthday due to this switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. So to give you a broader example that many would readily understand. The old Christmas was in January 6 which many people still celebrate around the world but the new Christmas as a result of losing 11 days became December 25. Many people protested at this time by demanding their eleven days lost but alas Calendars cause time loss. Some people give Lev 23:32 as a reference for a day from Evening to Evening. Wa'Yikra (Lev) 23:32 It shall be to you a set-apart Sabbath and you shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even to even, 1 shall you celebrate your Sabbath. This is not the weekly Sabbath but a special day on Yom Kippur so this is not the reference to how long a day is because those who use it are not reading the text which is saying from the 9th day to the tenth. In other words from the 9th evening to the 10th start is sunrise. Our normal fast is from sunrise to sunset but this particular Sabbath we were told to afflict our souls, we were not told to fast. This fasting came as a result of halacha by our forefathers who said it is to fast not to eat or drink for a period of twenty-five hours. As you can see under normal circumstances it would be a difficult fast if we always had to fast for twenty-five hours. So we actually began our fast the previous night so really this is a fast for a day and a half. It tells you in the passage that you are to keep the festival of Yom Kippur on the 10th day but says on the 9th day you start it. However the Hanok Calendar was designed to deal with these types of issues. The Calendar began in March 21 and a day was added every 90 days or the turn of the season so in total four days were added to make this a 364 days Calendar but the extra days were 1 Beginning on the 9 th evening at sunset the fast starts and ends on the tenth day at evening. Biblical days start at sunset during darkness to light. 4

5 not counted. In a leap year you add an extra day and it s not counted. This way the Hanok Calendar never went out of sync and never lost time. If your birthday fell on March 21 then it changed day each year such as one year March 21 is on a Monday then the following year it s on a Tuesday but March 21 was fixed. This was a fixed day that according to the earliest and original calendar given to Hanok fell on a fixed day each week which was numbered the Shabbat day. According to our timelines today in the Gregorian Calendar which is woefully inaccurate the Sabbath day could fall on any day of the week given in a year. So for example in 21, March 2013 to 21 March 2014 (The Hanok year) it would fall each week on a Thursday. In 21 March 2014 it will fall each week on a Friday and then when the new Hebrew year starts in 2015 March 21 it will fall on the Roman Saturday every week. So what we can see is the priestly Calendar that was maintained by Hanok and all subsequent priests was not a Saturday Sabbath each week. However ignorant sabbatarians will tell you that the Sabbath is on a Saturday each week, this is how many are duped into believing the Saturday myth. So how did a Saturday Sabbath come about? In the year 175 BCE Israel was invaded by the Greeks, Antochus Epiphanes IV. He was the king of the Selucid Empire from 175 BCE to 164 BCE until his death. His real name was Mithradates. 2 Maccabees 5:14 And there were destroyed within the space of three whole days fourscore thousand, whereof forty thousand were slain in the conflict; and no fewer sold than slain. According to the Maccabees 40,000 Jews were executed and another 40,000 Jews were sold into slavery. No man or woman was spared, Antiochus was ruthless. This slaughter that Antiochus conducted came as a result of Jason a deposed High Priest taking one thousand Jews to remove Manalus who was the High Priest appointed by Antiochus. These were terrible times for Israel once again after all that had happened. The Greeks tried to enforce on the Jews their own brand of Greek culture. They banned circumcision and outlawed the reading of the Torah that occurred each Sabbath. They then forced the Jews to adopt a sunset to sunset day. The original day was sunrise to sunrise. This then caused some Jews out of fear or out of political gains to join the Greeks and do as they said. While others like the Levitical family of Yahudah Maccabee refused to comply and they fought a guerrilla warfare to oust the Greeks. After they were given a miraculous victory they restored the Temple which was around three months later than the feast of Tents. They then went about to honour the feast lighting a Menorah and offering repentance and forgiveness to the Abbah in the heavens. 5

6 This was the time period when many had been forced to switch to the Greek days and to remove the laws of the Torah. Antiochus made every effort to make sure our people reject the Torah. If it was not for Yahudah Maccabee who was a Levite there would be no restoration of the Temple and Torah would vanish. But HaShem has always raised a Levite in times of trouble and whenever his people needed direction it came via a Levite. Remember when Pinechas shot a spear through the two idolaters. Num 25:7-9 And when Phinekas, the son of El ezar, the son of Aharon the kohen (priest), saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 8 And he went after the man of Y sra el into the alcove, 2 and thrust both of them through, the man of Y sra el, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Y sra el. 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty four thousand. Phinekas was a Levite. He stood up. In the times of King Sha'ul, Prophet Samuel the Levite stood up to cut down Amalek. First Samu'el 15:14-26 And Shema el said, What means then this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Sha ul said, They have brought them from the Amaleki: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to YHWH Your POWER; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16 Then Shema el said to Sha ul, Stay, and I will tell you what YHWH has said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on. 17 And Shema el said, When you were little in your own sight, were you not made the head of the tribes of Y sra el, and YHWH anointed you Sovereign over Y sra el? 18 And YHWH sent you on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the transgressors the Amaleki, and fight against them until they be consumed. 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of YHWH, but did fly upon the spoil, and did evil in the sight of YHWH? 20 And Sha ul said to Shema el, Yes, I have obeyed the voice of YHWH, and have gone the way which YHWH sent me, and have brought Agag the Sovereign of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amaleki. 21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to YHWH Your POWER in Gilgal. 22 And Shema el said, Has YHWH as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of YHWH? 3 Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the transgression of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of YHWH, he has also rejected you 2 The place or brothel where harlots were kept, selling linen clothes and giving free wine and the Y sra elites were openly committing sexual acts of indecency by being seduced by the women through drink. 3 To obey His Torah to listen to what YHWH says is better than sacrifice. This does not negate the fact that sacrifices are least but YHWH was not interested in the animals being used for sacrifices but to have his words fulfilled but Sha ul did not obey YHWH and then looked for excuses. 6

7 from being Sovereign And Sha ul said to Shema el, I have transgressed: for I have transgressed the commandment of YHWH, and your words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice Now therefore, I petition you, pardon my transgression, and turn again with me, that I may pay homage to YHWH. 26 And Shema el said to Sha ul, I will not return with you: for you have rejected the word of YHWH, and YHWH has rejected you from being Sovereign over Y sra el. King Sha'ul disobeyed and lost the Kingdom. Coming to the Sabbath The Saturday Sabbath as we know it came in at this time when the day was reverted from sunrise to a sunset to sunset day. Normally a day would only be a sunrise to sunrise 24 hours period. The day (light) part would begin at dawn and end at night. The rest of the night part of the Yom would continue and end until next dawn. We can see this pattern given in Beresheeth (Gen) 1. 3 And Elohim/Powers said, Light be; and light was Light was brought forth. 4 And Elohim/Powers saw the light that it was good; and Elohim/Powers separated 6 the light from the darkness. 5 Elohim/Powers called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were Yom Akhad (Day one). -- The light was now separated from the darkness and so the 24 hours period became known as Yom (Day) and Laila (night) The problem is most people are confusing Yom with the night part as well but the Yom has to be united or married to Laila (night) in order to become a complete day. The opposites have to be united in other words light with darkness. The same way man with woman has to be united. Without the unity it cannot be. Let me give you an example of women. Many women say I can do it on my own, I am going to teach the word of God but as long as she remains single she is without unity on the earth. Her teaching will be in vain. She must unite to her purpose to her husband and until that unity happens she will not be able to exercise herself properly. The only way she can be united is to marry and be attached to a right ruling man. 4 This was the second mark against King Sha ul after the incident in 1 Samuel 13:14. 5 This is what most of the Pastors are doing, not fearing YHWH to obey His Torah which they reject because they fear the people and their corrupt leaders who are stubborn to obey YHWH. 6 The drash reference to separating His right-ruling ones from those wicked by the hand of Elohim. 7

8 This is why when we were told to collect Manna it was not instructed to collect Manna at night. Shemoth (Exo) 16:13 So it was, that quails came up at evening, and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. 14 And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness was a small round thing, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Y sra el saw it, they said to one another, Is this manna? For they were not sure what it was. And Musa said to them, This is the Lakhem (bread) which YHWH has given you to eat. As can be seen the Manna came up during the dawn or beginning of the Day (Yom). Since the Torah "Day" does not begin at sunset but sunrise, God does not say go and collect Manna at sunset for two days. This is where one needs to understand the Ashkenazim Jews the proselytes guarding the Friday sunset to sunset day for the Sabbath is a custom and not a commandment. We Hebrews know the "Day" is collectively 24 hours but the Day light period is only 12 hours. This is why the even Rabbi Yahushua stated recording in the Christian writings: Yahukhannan John 11:9 Yahushua answered, are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. It should not take a genius to understand that the light period of the day is only twelve hours. So what would that make the Sabbath? The "light" period is only the part of day that we are forbidden from work. There were no night shifts in the wilderness where people went to work in the fields in total darkness this should be easy to understand. The "light" portion of Yom (Day) is only twelve hours. This is the only part restricted for not working on a Sabbath. Hence technically the Sabbath ends at sunset on the seventh day. Mattityahu 28:1 In the evening of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first of the week, came Miriam of Magdala and the other Miriam to see the tomb. Matthew 28:1 tells us that in night portion of the Sabbath while it was going to dawn when the full sunrise to sunrise day finishes. If you believe the Sabbbath ended at sunset on a given day then the two Miriams would not be able to go to the tomb or graveyard at night. Going to the graveyard at night was forbidden for Hebrew women so they could only travel while it was becoming dawn which is proof the 24 hour Yom (Day + night) finishes at dawn. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the messenger of YHWH descended from shamayim, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. -- Note also the angel descended so if it was still Sabbath the angel would not descend but his descending and moving the rock on the tomb was another sign that the Sabbath was ended at dawn and not sunset theory. 8

9 Mark 15:1 And straightway in the morning the chief kohenim held a consultation with the elders and experts in the Torah and the whole Sanhedrin, and bound Yahushua, and carried him away, and handed him to Pelatoos. The Temple services only commenced at dawn. This shows the High Priest called the elders to consultation at the beginning of the day during early sunrise hours. Mark 16:1 (HTHS) And when the Sabbath was past, Miriam of Magdala, and Miriam the mother of Yaqub, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 And very early in the morning mia shabatton (the First Sabbath), they came to the tomb at the rising of the sun. Two things are to be noted for evidence in Mark 16; The Sabbath was past [it already ended at sunset] and it was early in the morning [dawn]. How can the Sabbath be passed if you are doing the Friday sunset model? This is clear proof that the Day had ended at sunset and the early morning was the beginning of the New day. Since in ancient times the Sabbath was based on the Hanok Calendar therefore one year may fall on a Saturday our timeline but six other years it would fall on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Roughly every seventh year the Sabbath would be what we call our modern day Saturday. Shemoth (Exo) 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it set-apart. Sabbath Day - This is the light part of the day. God does not say remember the Sabbath night but instead says remember the day. Shemoth (Exo) 16:23 And he said to them, This is what YHWH has said, Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a set-apart Sabbath to YHWH; bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning. Some questions: "Tradition is a safeguarding fence around the Torah." Even if it is only tradition, why shouldn't that tradition be followed? If we didn't honour the traditions of the elders and judges, what would we have? Answer) We have the Torah. Tradition can never override the Torah. Rebbe Eleazar the Modi said: "If a man profanes things which are sacred, and offends the setapart days and puts his fellow to shame publicly, and makes void the covenant of Abraham our 9

10 father, and teaches meanings in the Torah which are not according to Halakhah, even though he has a knowledge of the Torah and good works, he has no share in the world to come." Answer) Well We do not do that, we are restoring the Torah and the contracts as they were. The one who does that is an honourable Torah guarder and will be rewarded in the coming age. Question) On the Talmud whether this is valid My son, be more careful in [the observance of] the words of the Scribes than in the words of the Torah, for in the laws of the Torah there are positive and negative precepts; but, as to the laws of the Scribes, whoever transgresses any of the enactments of the Scribes incurs the penalty of death. [Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Eiruvin, 21b] Answer) The Torah overrules any Talmudic law. What about higher and lower courts. A Court is unable to annul the decisions of another Court, unless it is superior to it in wisdom and numerical strength! Furthermore, Rabbah b. Bar Hanah has said in the name of R. Johanan: In all matters a Court can annul the decisions of another Court except the eighteen things [prohibited by the Schools of Hillel and Shammai], for even were Elijah and his Court to come [and declare them permitted] we must not listen to him! [Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Avodah Zarah 36a] Answer) It is true that a higher court can annul and reverse or change a decision of an earlier court however if the decision was made by a Kohen/Levite it will stand as he is the authority according to the Torah and has the final say on this earth. If we look at the relevant passages it says the following: Deut 21:5 And the kohenim the sons of Lewi shall come near; for them YHWH Your POWER has chosen to speak to him... As can clearly be seen the Kohenim (Priests) have been chosen to hear the Abbah in the heavens. So can the 71 judges overrule the Levite? The answer? No. They can certainly make a decision in which a Levite is standing in their midst but let's put it this way. If the 71 judges were all Yahudah and they wanted to make a decision even if 70 judges said yes to a decision and only one judge said no that being a Levite even though they would have a majority rule their decision could still be overturned by a single Levite. Which still makes the decision suspect. Or they have 50/50 still no show. A Levi must be present and able to participate. This is why when Christendom as a religion was rubber stamped by Rome and Constantine called all the Bishops to attend to decide on the fate of the new religion while there was not a single Levite present. They decided the New Testament books were scripture but that was not our decision, we did not say that but the gentiles did. However no Levite in his right mind would ever except the books of the New Testament to be Qadosh (set-apart). They are our history books and contain biography of Rabbi 10

11 Yahushua but they are not holy. The only books we call holy or Qadosh is the books of the Tanak, the Hebrew bible. A case in point in the history of our people was the Ten Martyrs when the Roman Emperor issued an edict to kill the ten people. These were giants of Torah, mighty rightruling men. Each quite able and having wisdom people like Rabbi Akiva amongst others. Even then they sent for the Levite Rabbi Y'shma'el ben Elisha to make enquiry from heaven on their behalf. They did not say we are the mighty scholars let us decide it shows even in their approach they were humble and willing to listen to the Kohen what he had to tell them. The Kohen made the inquiry and was answered from heaven that the decree of their martyrdom was from heaven. They then made themselves ready to die for and on behalf of heaven. While today we have gentiles who have little to no understanding about our laws telling us who can decide and who cannot. Unfortunately we allow the gentiles some room and they think they know better than even us. Its best we keep all gentiles out of our camps and at bay where they belong.
