Pastor Scott Velain THE DAY OF ATONEMENT The day of Atonement is one of the most important Christian appointments that can be kept with our Father in Heaven and his only begotten Son Yahushua Hamashiach, Jesus our Messiah. The Day of Atonement is not a Jewish holiday it is not a religious tradition it is not to be overlooked, or forgotten along with the what we now know today as the Old Testament. The Day of Atonement is a day of solemn rest for the Christian it s a day that no work is to be done. It is to be a day of weeping and affliction for the Christian. It is a day to remember all that our Father in Heaven and his only begotten Son have done for us and because of us. It is a day that every Christian should bow their heads, bend their knees, and face the holy promised land of Jerusalem and weep for the blood that has been spilt because of our wickedness. There are some shocking things that we re going to discover here today concerning the day of Atonement. Things that you may not have heard before. Things that I hope will open the eyes of the blind, and break the chains of those who are still all caught up in the bondage of today s modern-day version of what today s society thinks. Christianity is. Let me begin by saying this if you are a professing Christian who does not know that your Messiah Yahushua, Jesus was a Jew who came from the house of Judah and the tribe of David and you do not know that every true Christian has been grafted into the house of Israel, through the body of our Messiah Yahushua, Jesus Just as we re told throughout the scriptures in places like Exodus 12:48 and 49, and Numbers 15:14 through 16 or all of Romans chapter 11, and Galatians 3:26 through 29 then you need to visit us at HolyImpactMinistries.com and let us minister to you. Let us take you by the hand and walk you through the God breathed scriptures so that you may know exactly what the God breathed scriptures that we hold in our very hands proclaim. We have several free video teachings, and several free downloadable PDF files for you to learn from that will cost you nothing more than the time it takes to sit down and view them. As for those of my brothers and sisters who already know that our Messiah Yahushua Hamashiach, Jesus the Messiah was indeed a Jew who came from the house of Judah and the tribe of David and who know that we are all grafted into the House of Israel through the body of our Messiah and that we are all now part of the offspring of Abraham, and heirs to the promise that our Father in Heaven gave to Abraham you may be pleasantly surprised with 1

the information that we re going to share with you here today. Before we get started it s important to understand once again that the Day of Atonement is not a Feast Day according to the scriptures. A lot of Christians who are new to the truth of the scriptures don t understand this and they think that all of our Fathers Appointments (also known as his Moedim) are feast days but they are not. Here is a list of our Fathers Moedim also known as his appointments. There are four Moedim in the spring and another three in the fall. The spring Moedim have already been fulfilled by out Messiah. The three in the fall are appointments that have not been brought to fulfillment as of yet. It s important to understand that only three of these Moedim are actually commanded Feast Days. 2

Passover also known as Chag HaMatzot is a feast day. Pentecost also known as Shavuot is a feast day and Tabernacles which is also known as Sukkot are the only three, true commanded feast days found in our scriptures. And so, it s important that we know these things and that we read the scriptures for ourselves so that we re not led astray by the teachings of those who do not read the scriptures for themselves and teach what they ve been wrongly spoon fed by someone else who s been spoon fed by someone else who s been spoon fed something that s not found in the God breathed scriptures that we hold in our hands. And so, as we begin our journey into the proper understanding of the Day of Atonement we need to reach back into the beginning of the Day of Atonement also known as Yom Kippur so that we can get a better understanding of what the Day of Atonement actually stood for from the beginning. And we need to also understand which day the Day of Atonement truly falls on. So, let s first turn to Leviticus 23:26-32: Lev 23:26 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Lev 23:27 Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD. Lev 23:28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. Lev 23:29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people. 3

Lev 23:30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. Lev 23:31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. Lev 23:32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath. Now there are a few things to make note of here in this particular scripture. One of those important things is how we know when the true day of Atonement falls on so let s take a look at Leviticus 23:27 and let s know and understand that according to the scripture the Day of Atonement is commanded to be kept on the tenth day of the seventh month. Lev 23:27 Lev 23:27 Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD. So according to the scripture there should be no doubt in anyone s mind when the Day of Atonement falls. Now we know that our Father in Heaven created the moon to mark the seasons. How do we know that? Psalms 104:19: Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows it s time for setting. We can also know that the new moon marks a new month in our Fathers calendar by going back to Leviticus 23:27 and taking a look at the word month in this verse. The original Hebrew word for month is chodesh and it means New Moon or The first day of the month. Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew Definitions: cho desh BDB Definition: 1) the new moon, month, monthly 1a) the first day of the month 1b) the lunar month Part of Speech: noun masculine A Related Word by BDB/Strong s Number: from H2318 So now that we know that the Day of Atonement is going to be on the 10 th day of the seventh month all we need to do is count 10 days from the last new moon. For this we need to take a look at our lunar calendar to see when the last new moon was that began the seventh month. 4

As we can see the new moon falls on the 20 th of September this year in So, the first day of the seventh month would have been September 20 th. If we count 10 days (including Sept 20 th because it is the first day of the month) we come to the 29 th of September, and therefore September 29 th is the Day of Atonement according to the scripture. Now with that being said we have some of our Messianic brethren who will teach that the 30 th is really the proper Day of Atonement because they will argue that the sliver of the moon had to be seen in order for it to be a New Moon however we would contend that the Israelites were well aware of which day the New Moon was. They were taught these things by our father and nothing has changed between then and now. The New Moon is and always has been when the moon is completely darkened, and there is a whole study on that particular topic that we won t get into here for time s sake. But once again to properly count ten days from the last new moon is to arrive at Friday, September 29, 2017, and so the Day of Atonement would begin at sundown on the 28 th and last until sundown on the 29 th not the 29 th and 30 th. And because we hold fast to what the scripture says here at Holy Impact Ministries we and other well-known ministries will be keeping the Day of Atonement from sundown Thursday the 28 th to sundown Friday the 29 th this year in 2017 because this is what our Father has commanded through the scripture. So now that we know when the day of Atonement is and how to calculate it properly let s turn to a more detailed description of exactly what was to be done on the Day of Atonement. We 5

can find that in Leviticus chapter 16: Lev 16:1 The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD and died, Lev 16:2 and the LORD said to Moses, Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. Lev 16:3 But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. Lev 16:4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on. Lev 16:5 And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. Lev 16:6 Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. Lev 16:7 Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Lev 16:8 And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for Azazel. Lev 16:9 And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD and use it as a sin offering, Lev 16:10 but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel. Lev 16:11 Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. Lev 16:12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil Lev 16:13 and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die. Lev 16:14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. Lev 16:15 Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. Lev 16:16 Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. Lev 16:17 No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel. Lev 16:18 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it, 6

and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. Lev 16:19 And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel. Lev 16:20 And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. Lev 16:22 The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness. Lev 16:23 Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and shall take off the linen garments that he put on when he went into the Holy Place and shall leave them there. Lev 16:24 And he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his garments and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people. Lev 16:25 And the fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar. Lev 16:26 And he who lets the goat go to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. Lev 16:27 And the bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. Their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be burned up with fire. Lev 16:28 And he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. Lev 16:29 And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you. Lev 16:30 For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the LORD from all your sins. Lev 16:31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it is a statute forever. Lev 16:32 And the priest who is anointed and consecrated as priest in his father's place shall make atonement, wearing the holy linen garments. Lev 16:33 He shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. Lev 16:34 And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins. And Aaron did as the LORD commanded Moses. Now it s important to understand that according to the tradition of Judaism the 10 days between Yom Teruah (which is also known as the Day of Trumpets) and the day of Atonement 7

are the 10 days known as The Days of Awe which basically means that the Day of Trumpets has been known throughout Judaism as a wakeup call for the Day of Atonement. During these 10 days of awe between these two Moedim it is said that we are to repent, and get our houses in order, and already be asking for forgiveness for any sins that we may have carelessly made and then on the Day of Atonement most traditional Jewish people will fast for the 24 hours during the Day of Atonement because they believe that this is what afflicts them. But now that we know and understand the true meaning of the Day of Atonement we can know that afflicting ourselves is much more than a simple 24 hour fast. We must remember that the Day of Atonement represented a High Priest who labored hard during the Day of Atonement doing more work than at any other time of the year. And we can see this High Priest washing himself and then washing himself again, and offering up sacrifices for himself and for his household. But we now have a High Priest who sits at the right hand of our Father a better High Priest who had no need to wash himself because he was without spot or wrinkle he was the unblemished lamb of our Father who needed no washing. And he labored far more than did the High Priest of those early days. Our last high Priest who is in the order of Melkesedeck labored until his body could no longer labor. And we can clearly see this High Priest (also known as Arron the brother of Moses) taking two goats. One goat he used as an offering to cleans the holy place and the tabernacle that had become stained with the sins of the people of the House of Israel. It s just like you or I would go to visit someone who smokes. Even though we don t smoke we would leave that person s house with the smell of smoke on us because we were around that person who smoked. And so, it was with the sins of Israel that the tabernacle itself needed to be cleansed from sin. In verses we see the High Priest taking the second goat and he lays his two hands on the head of the second goat and confesses the sins of the House of Israel and he lays all of the sins of the House of Israel on the head of that second goat and that goat bears all the iniquities of the House of Israel on itself and then a fit man who is well kept. then sends this goat out into the wilderness as far away from the camp as he can. This my friends is a picture of the innocent taking the place of the guilty just like our Messiah took our place and bore our sins upon himself. And it must be made clear that all animal sacrifice pointed to the innocent taking the place of the guilty. When the early Israelite s would put their hands on an animal and then kill it because they had sinned they were in effect symbolizing the murdering of their soon to come Messiah who was our Passover lamb and who was innocent and yet he was murdered for the sins of all that would believe in and follow him, and walk as he walked. Everything that was done on the Day of Atonement by the High Priest of that day was nothing more than a shadow, and a picture of our High Priest of today who is Yahushua Hamashiach Jesus our Messiah who now sits at the right hand of his Father waiting for his Father to make his enemies his footstool, and who will one day soon do just that as he ushers in his coming kingdom. 8

It has been taught that the Day of Atonement need not be celebrated any longer because Jesus did it all for us and so therefore we don t have to do anything. But I would submit to you my friends that our Father in Heaven has commanded this Day of Atonement to be kept and I quote from Leviticus 23:31 forever throughout your generations. My friends did our Father in Heaven not know what he was talking about when he told us that this day would be and appointment between him and us forever throughout our generations? Our Father in Heaven who sees the end from the beginning did not know that this day was not to be kept forever throughout our generations? I would submit to you my friends that our Father in Heaven said what he meant and meant what he said and that this day was indeed to be kept forever throughout our generations. And so, let us now turn to the destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70AD. Now that the Temple of Israel has been destroyed and another could not be re-constructed what does this mean for the Jewish people and House of Israel? Think about this for just a moment. They have no more temple which means that they can no longer atone for their sins according to what is written in the Torah. Does this mean that atonement can no longer be made for the Jews and the House of Israel? Does this mean that our Father in Heaven has rejected the Jews and the lost sheep of the House of Israel, that our Messiah said he was sent for in Matthew 15:24? Or does it mean that our Father in Heaven has provided a better way a better atonement? Does this mean that the sacrificial means of atonement for sin has been completed once and for all by the one who has been prophesied to come from the very beginning even by Moses himself? Could it possibly mean that only those who believe in and follow, and walk in the ways of Yahushua Hamashiach, Jesus the Messiah who was the only begotten son of God and is our Passover Lamb will have the atonement that they need on the day of resurrection? You bet it does Think about it my Jewish friends your temple has been destroyed for almost two thousand years. You traditional Jews think about it and morn over it every single day your Rabbi s morn over it so could it be that there is no more atonement for national Israel? How could this be when in we were promised in Jeremiah chapter 31 verse 33 that God would make a new covenant with the House of Israel and that he would be their God and they would be his people? Is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob not strong enough or, true enough, or mighty enough to keep his promise? Or has he already opened the door to those whom he has chosen to come and walk through that door that no man can shut? Has he already provided atonement for those who are seeking him? Has he already sent the Prophet that Moses himself spoke about? Repentance and turning away from sin is vitally important but without a substitute to cleans us and without a substitute to carry our sins away without a substitute to take our place there is no atonement according to the Hebrew scriptures. The Messiah Yahushua Hamashiach Jesus the Messiah is that substitute that those two goats were pointing too he is the substitute that the Day of Atonement pointed too he is the last unblemished Passover 9

lamb that ever needs to be sacrificed the last goat, bull, or ram that needs to point directly to him. Matthew 26:27 and 28: Mat 26:27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you, Mat 26:28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Ephesians 1:7-10: Eph 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, Eph 1:8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight Eph 1:9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ Eph 1:10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. My friends even the Jewish Rabbi s in their own Talmud have confirmation of the fact that Yahushua, Jesus was and is the Messiah. And yes, I know that the Jewish Talmud is full of wicked and untrue things written by the so-called Rabbi s and their traditions but even there in their own Talmud the light of our Messiah shines brightly for those who have the eyes to see. It was said that the Israelite people had several traditions that told them whether or not the sacrifices from the Day of Atonement had been accepted or not. One tradition had to do with the lots that were cast for the goats that we see in Leviticus 16:8. If the lot for goat for God came up in the right hand that was seen as a good sign but If the lot for the goat for Azazel came up in the right hand this was considered to be bad. Another tradition was that the oil lamps of the temple were lit from the western side to the eastern side and according to tradition if God accepted the sacrifices on the Day of Atonement then the oil lamp that was lit first would be the last one to go out which is the opposite of what should normally happen. The first lamp to be lit should be the first to go out not the last but this was a tradition that they held to that told them whether or not their sacrifices were accepted by our Father in Heaven. Another tradition was that they would tie a scarlet ribbon around the horn of the ram that was to be sent out into the wilderness but before they let it go they would take a thread from that scarlet ribbon of that ram and they would then tie that thread to the temple door. And it was always said that if if the sacrifices of Atonement were accepted by our Father the scarlet thread tied to the door of temple would turn snow white just as it s written in Isaiah 1:18 where God says though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow and so there were several traditions that told them whether or not God had accepted their sacrifices. 10

According to the Talmud there was a Rabbi by the name of Shamon Hadsadeek who had written that all throughout his 40 years that scarlet ribbon on the door of the temple had turned white which meant that the Day of Atonement sacrifices were accepted and that God had forgiven the people but listen to what their own Babylonian Talmud says in Yoma 39b: So, our Messiah Yahushua dies in 30A.D. and the temple is destroyed in 70A.D that s 40 years in-between these two events and the Talmud says that the last 40 years before the destruction of the temple the sacrifices on the Day of Atonement were - not - accepted. And we also know that the curtain in the temple was torn in two could this have been reflected in the temple doors opening by themselves? Those who recorded this information did not believe in the Messiah Yahushua. But if what they themselves have recorded is true then it should be clear to them that the reason that their sacrifices on the Day of Atonement were not accepted after the Messiah s death meant that their Messiah was who he said he was. But do you think they re wise enough to see it?... only some have been and yet even today even many more are coming. The day of Atonement is a day for mankind to wake up and realize that it was not the Jew or the Gentile that hung their Messiah on that cross next to those two thieves that day. It was both Jew and Gentile that hung him there. No man is innocent. No man is without his blood upon his hands. No man can say that our Messiah s blood was not spilt for him or by him. It was while 11

we were still sinners that he atoned for our sins and it was while they were driving those nails into his hands and feet that he willingly spilled his blood for the very man who had those cursed nails in his hands ready to swing the hammer that drove those nails through our Messiah s hands and feet. He died for the men who crushed that crown of thorns into his skull. He died for the man who spit in his face. He died for the man who slapped him and beat him and mocked him. He died for the men who cast lots for his cloths. He died for the so called High Priest who stood before him pointing at him and condemning him. The Day of Atonement is a day that we should indeed all be afflicted it s a day that we should realize how blind, wretched, and naked that we are without him. It s a day that we should ponder what it took to do the things that he did and to endure the way that he endured. It s a day that I believe has much to do with his return when all the world will have to deal with the atonement for their sin because they have rejected him, and turned away from him and chose to live for themselves and to build their empires of dirt here in this world instead of saving up their treasures in the kingdom to come. The Day of Atonement is indeed a day that will we will all one way or the other soon remember. 12
