Genesis 17:1-14 (4/15/15) Genesis 16:16 (NKJV) 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. Genesis 17:1 (NKJV) 1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. So we see a thirteen year gap between the end of chapter 16 and the beginning of chapter 17. Chapter 16 ends with the birth of Ishmael Abram s attempt to help God fulfill His promise a total work of the flesh. I m wondering what Abram was thinking for those thirteen years that God was silent? Was he thinking that he had forfeited the promise God gave to him because of what he had done? Did he feel as though God had forsaken him on account of this Ishmael debacle? Thirteen years is a long time for God to be silent when suddenly God appeared to Abram and said, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless This is the first (but not the last) time God calls Himself by the title Almighty God 1

The Hebrew is El Shaddai (shuh-dye). El is the name of God but what exactly does Shaddai mean? Scholars don t agree. Some say it comes from a Hebrew word meaning to be strong ; others believe the Hebrew word means breast as in the female breast the place of life and nourishment for the new born. If we combine these ideas together, when God called Himself El Shaddai He was referring to Himself as the all-powerful, all-sufficient God who is the source of life, the One who can do anything and meet any need. Of course in saying this God wasn t reminding Himself of Who He was He was reminding Abram and us! Our relationship with God, whether we re talking about an O.T. patriarch like Abram or a N.T. Christian like ourselves our relationship with God rises or falls on our understanding of God Himself. Our belief in His ability to take care of us, protect us, provide our needs and fulfill every promise He has given to us is hard-wired into whether or not we believe He is our El-Shaddai the awesome, all-powerful and all-sufficient God who can do anything and meet any need. So that is where our relationship with God begins with a proper understanding of Who He is which then leads to our walk with Him "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless The word blameless doesn t mean perfect it literally means whole, complete or singlehearted. 2

I believe He was saying to Abram when you walk with Me I expect total commitment from you which includes unwavering faith in My promises. I don t need your help in fulfilling My promises. I don t want any more Ishmaels in your life walk with Me in complete trust, obedience and surrender. When God said walk before Me and be blameless it was a challenge to all of those that are the covenant people of God. You belong to Me now walk before Me and be blameless at work, at home, in private, when you re on the computer We need to understand that we live in the presence of God and He is with us wherever we go; He is watching whatever we do; and He is listening to all that we say He wants our walk to be blameless and honoring to Him. Genesis 17:1-2 (NKJV) 1 the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." Now don t let this throw you. God had already made a covenant with Abram back in chapter 12 and then reaffirmed it in chapters 13 and 15. In chapter 15 we saw how that God added force to this covenant to make it absolutely sure by having Abram kill some animals, lay them on the ground (finish). By doing this God added to His verbal promise (covenant) to Abram by now entering into a formal covenant with him. 3

And now in chapter 17 God adds a sign to the covenant a visible symbol of the covenant He had made with Abram and his descendants circumcision. Genesis 17:3-5 (NKJV) 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. Abram means exalted father Abraham means father of a multitude. For 99 years people had been calling him exalted father when he wasn t a father of any so his name was a little humbling. Now God changes his name to Abraham father of a multitude and he has to go back to his wife and servants and tell them, don t call me exalted father anymore my name is now father of a multitude. It has now been twenty-four years since God first told Abram he was going to have a son at that time he was 75 years old. Now he s 99, Sarai is 89 both of them are dead reproductively they re both incapable of helping God any longer to fulfill His promise to give them children. And now finally God is ready to fulfill His promise but notice it coincides with them dying in the flesh which now allows God to work in the Spirit. And I further want you to see how God emphasizes this by changing Abram s name to Abraham. 4

God inserts a breath sound right into the middle of his name (fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet). The Hebrew word for breath is ruach which is also the word for spirit (or in this case Spirit ) He does the same thing for Sarai by changing her name to Sarah. In a symbolic way God was saying that He needs to wait for us to die to self and be filled with the Spirit before He can do for us all that He wants to do. The work of God is always of the Spirit and never of the flesh. Abram tried to help God out in his flesh but God didn t even recognize that child take your son your only son Isaac (Gen.22) God wanted Isaac s birth to be a total miracle something Abram and Sarai couldn t accomplish in their own strength. This coincides with our physical birth and then our spiritual birth John 3:3-6 (NKJV) 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Our physical birth was natural our spiritual birth was supernatural a total miracle of God! 5

Genesis 17:6-7 (NKJV) 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you As we have already seen this covenant was unilateral and unconditional (ch.15 only God passed through those animal parts). And because this covenant was unilateral and unconditional it was therefore eternal and unforfeitable. As we have already pointed out the covenant that God made with Abraham is connected to the New Covenant He made with us through Jesus. Both were blood covenants; both were entered into by faith; both were unconditional; and both were (and are) eternal. And just as there was no chance of replacement theology with the covenant God made with Abraham (and Israel) there is no replacing us if we fail in our relationship with God in the New Covenant. Romans 11:1 (NKJV) 1 I say then, has God cast away His people [Israel]? Certainly not!... Romans 11:29 (NKJV) 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. And to those in the New Covenant Jesus said 6

John 6:37-40 (NKJV) 37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day." John 10:27-30 (NKJV) 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. 30 I and My Father are one." Genesis 17:8 (NKJV) 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God." And once again notice that God promised the land of Canaan to Abraham and his descendants as part of this covenant as an everlasting possession. Eleven times in Scripture God calls the covenant He made with the nation of Israel an everlasting covenant. Many today believe that because Israel rejected her Messiah she, as a nation, has forfeited the promises that God gave to her and now the Church has taken her place and has become spiritual Israel. This is the position that most Christian denominations and many independent churches today have espoused. It is called Replacement Theology. However you can t forfeit an unconditional covenant. 7

Furthermore, the prophets foretold that the Messiah would be rejected by Israel and crucified, yet in all of those prophecies there is never a suggestion that because of this rejection God would break His everlasting covenant with Israel. Romans 10:21, 11:1 (NKJV) 21 But to Israel he says: "All day long I have stretched out My hands To a disobedient and contrary people." 1 I say then, has God cast away His people? (rhetorical question in the Greek) One author said, Indeed, at the same time that God promises eternal blessings to Israel in a full restoration in the last days, He also recites her unfaithfulness to Him without a hint that the many sins of Israel and the Jewish people would be any deterrent to His fulfilling all of His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We know that after God brought the children of Israel into the Promised Land under Joshua even before Joshua died the people began to get into idolatry (Joshua 24). Things degenerated over the years until God had to remove His people from the land because of their wickedness and unfaithfulness. This would have been the perfect time for God to have cast them away from Him permanently as His people if the covenant He had made with them was conditional, based on their faithfulness to Him. And yet through the prophet Ezekiel God promises their future restoration back into their land Ezekiel 36:11 (NKJV) 11 I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do better for you than at your beginnings. Then you shall know that I am the LORD. 8

Ezekiel 36:22-26 (NKJV) 22 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. 23 And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD," says the Lord GOD, "when I am hallowed in you before their eyes. 24 For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:32-36 (NKJV) 32 Not for your sake do I do this," says the Lord GOD, "let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!" 33 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. 35 So they will say, 'This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.' 36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken it, and I will do it." Listen, the church was never given a land, it was never scattered from that land and it was never brought back into that land. The only way replacement theology proponents can make these Scriptures (and many others like them) refer to the Church and not to Israel is to spiritualize them to death! So, unless you are going to spiritualize all of these Scriptures that are clearly spoken to Israel and not to the Church there is nothing in Scripture that supports replacement theology. Author Dave Hunt nails it when he says, [The Jewish people stubbornly continue to exist when they should have been wiped out long ago] In fact, the existence of the Jews today and of their presence in Israel and the rebirth of the nation of Israel constitutes one of the greatest proofs that God exists and that the Bible is His Word. And, if you try to spiritualize this and turn Israel into the Church, you have pulled the rug out from under some of the greatest prophecies in the Bible. The Old Testament is filled with prophecies concerning the return of these people to their land and that; in fact, they will be born again one day. 9

Paul in (Romans 10), begins this way, he says, Brethren, my heart s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. I bear the record that they have a zeal after God but not according to knowledge. Now put the church in there. Paul says brethren, my heart s desire and prayer to God for the church is that they might be saved. Wait a minute! You have to be saved to get into the church. So, the church still exists today and Israel still exists today but they are two separate entities. Why is this important for us who are Christians why should we care about what happens to Israel? If everlasting, concerning the covenant God made with Israel, doesn t mean everlasting, then how can we trust the covenant He made with us when He promised in John 3:16 everlasting life to those who believe on Christ? That s why our understanding of Israel and God s promises and faithfulness to Israel are so vital to our understanding of God s plan and promises He made to His Church God s character is on the line! The survival of the Jewish people throughout history is a testimony to the existence and faithfulness of God. Queen Victoria said to her prime minister one day Show me one thing that proves the Bible is absolutely true. His response was interesting and right on the money The Jew madam, the Jew. So the land that God gave to Israel is part of the everlasting covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants and can never be forfeited! We know it but the U.N. doesn t know it; the Palestinians don t know it; our president and his administration don t know it until they mess with Israel and try to take that land away from them then they will know it and never forget it! 10

Genesis 17:9-11 (NKJV) 9 And God said to Abraham: "As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. Now once again, circumcision was not the covenant but the sign of the covenant. Circumcision was to be the outward sign that represented an inward spiritual truth. This outward sign was to be a reminder of this covenant a sign or symbol but it was not the covenant itself (like a wedding ring is to the marriage covenant). Unfortunately, the Jewish people eventually made this ritual a means of salvation. Many centuries later, after Paul would go into an area and preach the gospel of grace the Judaizers would come in after him and teach that new converts had to be circumcised to be saved. Romans 4:9-12 (NKJV) 9 For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised. One author said, Circumcision was not the means of Abraham s salvation but the mark of his separation as a man in covenant relationship with God. 11

Circumcision was an outward ritual that represented the separation of God s covenant people from the world (holiness to the Lord). The Jews began to put their faith in the ritual forgetting completely the reality it was intended to represent Deuteronomy 30:6 (NKJV) 6 And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. Jeremiah 4:4 (NKJV) 4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, And take away the foreskins of your hearts, You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Lest My fury come forth like fire, And burn so that no one can quench it, Because of the evil of your doings." Again, circumcision symbolized the cutting away of the uncleanness of the flesh to be holy before God as His covenant people. The legalistic element in the early church tried to make circumcision and obedience to the Law a requirement for salvation for the Gentiles, but this heresy was refuted (Acts 15:1 35). Galatians 6:15 (NKJV) 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation. Colossians 2:11 (NKJV) 11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, Paul is not referring to the physical ritual of circumcision but to the spiritual reality it represented which is why he calls it the circumcision made without hands (inward holiness thru the Spirit when we accepted Jesus into our hearts). 12

The Jews had made circumcision essential for salvation just like a lot of Christians do with water baptism. Every male Jewish baby on the eighth day of life was circumcised according to Lev.12:3. This brought them into the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants he was now part of God s covenant people His elect. That didn t mean circumcision saved him when he got older he still had to believe in the God of Israel with his heart. But being part of God s elect meant he was now set aside by God for special privilege, blessing and responsibility as one of His covenant people. Once again circumcision although important did not save Abram was saved 14 years before he was circumcised. Another good example would be Ishmael he was circumcised but never showed any evidence of salvation. Rituals like circumcision and water baptism never save they are simply outward symbols that point to inward spiritual truths. Genesis 17:12 (NKJV) 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13

It s interesting that God told the Jews to circumcise their sons on the eighth day the day that we now know is the day when an infant s immune system is at the optimum level for such a procedure. Also vitamin K (a clotting agent) reaches its full strength on the eighth day. And another blood clotting agent, prothrombin, is at 30% on the third day, on the eighth day it reaches 110% and by the ninth day it falls to 100% making the eighth day the safest, earliest day to circumcise an infant. Genesis 17:13-14 (NKJV) 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant." In other words cut off from the life, the blessings and the protection of the covenant people of God. When a Christian stops living a holy life and gets back into sinful living they are cut off from God practically but not positionally. Isaiah 59:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. 1 John 1:5-10 (NKJV) 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 14
