TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, in today s Bible story your child heard about Philip helping an Ethiopian official learn about Jesus. Philip encountered this man on the road. What people do you encounter whom your family can tell about Jesus love? COMMUNITY KIDS A N D W O R L D LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Christians are called to tell the people of the world about Jesus. PHILIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN An angel spoke to Philip: Go south to the desert road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza. Philip left the place he had been preaching to obey. When Philip came to a road, an important official from Ethiopia was riding in his chariot. He worked for Candace, the queen, and was in charge of her money. Philip noticed that the Ethiopian man was reading aloud from a scroll with words that Isaiah wrote. God s Spirit said to Philip, Go near that chariot! LIVE IT OUT: Has your child ever shared his testimony with a friend? Remind him that God wants us to tell others the good news about Jesus. Help him think of a friend who needs to know about Jesus. Brainstorm ideas for helping that friend learn about Jesus. DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Acts 16:31 Monday: Mark 4:2 Tuesday: Deuteronomy 11:18 Wednesday: Matthew 7:29 Thursday: Acts 8:36-37 Friday: Psalm 1:6 Saturday: Psalm 119:74 Philip did. The Ethiopian asked, Who is the prophet writing about? Philip gladly told the man that the words he was reading were good news about Jesus. Soon they rode by some water. The Ethiopian asked, Is there anything to keep me from being baptized? Philip said, If you believe in Jesus with all your heart, you can! The man answered, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Philip baptized the Ethiopian man, and the man was very excited as he went home. God s Spirit took Philip to another place, where he kept on teaching about Jesus. based on Acts 8:26-40 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Acts 16:31 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Philip and the Ethiopian section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, in today s Bible story your child learned about Saul (later called Paul). God chose Saul to tell the Gentiles about Jesus even though Saul had been persecuting the new Christians. God used Saul s zeal for truth and made him into a missionary who told the world what Jesus had done for him. COMMUNITY A N D W O R L D KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Christians are called to tell the people of the world about Jesus. SAUL TOLD ABOUT JESUS Saul was a Jewish leader who, at first, did not believe Jesus was the Messiah. Saul would arrest and punish Christians for teaching that Jesus was the Son of God. One day Saul was traveling on a road to Damascus when a bright light blinded him. Jesus spoke to Saul, and Saul believed that Jesus was really the Messiah. Jesus changed Saul s life! As soon as Saul could see again, he spent time with Jesus disciples in Damascus and went to the synagogue to preach. Jesus is the Son of God! Saul announced. LIVE IT OUT: How have you seen Jesus helping your family? Talk to your child about what Jesus has done for her. Share your own testimony and tell her how being a Christian has changed your life. Explain that sharing one's testimony is an important part of telling a person about Jesus and what He can do for them. DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Psalm 66:16 Monday: Acts 9:20 Tuesday: Psalm 78:35 Wednesday: Matthew 18:21 Thursday: Acts 9:31 Friday: Psalm 78:7 Saturday: Matthew 18:35 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Luke 12:8 The people who heard Saul were confused. Isn t this the same person who was in Jerusalem? they asked. Isn t this the man who hurt people who believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Didn t he come here to take those people away as prisoners? But Saul s preaching proved with no doubt that Jesus was the Messiah, God s Chosen One. The Jewish leaders decided that they needed to find a way to stop Saul from teaching everyone about Jesus. Saul found out about their plan, and his friends helped him escape. They hid Saul in a large basket, and when it was dark, they lowered him through a large hole in the city wall. Saul escaped! Saul went to Jerusalem. He wanted to make friends with Jesus disciples living in Jerusalem, but they were afraid of him. Saul had done terrible things to Christians, and at first, they did not believe that he had really changed. A disciple named Barnabas took Saul to the other disciples, and Saul told them how he had seen Jesus on the road to Damascus. Barnabas told the disciples how Saul taught about Jesus in the synagogues and how the Jewish leaders tried to stop him. The disciples helped Saul travel to many places to tell people about Jesus. Even though people did not want to believe Saul at first, he did not give up. He continued to tell people about what Jesus had done for him. The church grew, and there was peace. based on Acts 9:19-31 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Saul Told About Jesus section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

UNIT 1. SESSION 3 Peter and Cornelius Believe in the UNIT VERSE Lord Jesus, and you Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, will be saved. and thou shalt be saved. Use the clues in each information block to figure out where: A church from Texas helped villagers in the Himalayas after a terrible earthquake. The Christians provided supplies and helped build a church from bamboo. You ll find people from many cultures in this large city just four hours from Detroit, Michigan. Daniel Yang and his fellow workers started a home Bible study in a neighborhood where they knew no one. The group has grown into a church called Trinity Church. Bonjour! A missionary team visits door to door in this European city to meet people from West Africa and give them videos that tell Jesus story. The African people have moved here to find work. A group of estudiantes (students) hung out at a university here. Simply by spending time with other college kids, the American team showed their new friends what it is like to love Jesus and live for Him. 8 TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, your child heard that Peter learned a lesson. God called Peter to tell Cornelius, a Gentile, about Jesus. God wants people to be involved in His work around the world. How is your family engaged in spreading Jesus love though all the world? COMMUNITY A N D W O R L D KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God works through people to do His work in their communities and world. PETER AND CORNELIUS A man from Caesarea named Cornelius was a centurion. A centurion was an officer in the Roman army who was in charge of about 100 soldiers. Cornelius was a good man who helped people and prayed to God. One day, an angel appeared to him, Cornelius, your prayers and acts of kindness are like an offering to God. Send men to Joppa and call for Simon Peter who is staying with Simon the tanner. The angel said that Peter would have a message for Cornelius. LIVE IT OUT: How can you involve your child in God s work around the world? If he is old enough, encourage your child to participate in a family missions trip with your church. If that is not possible, he could earn money to help support a missionary or pray for others going on a missions trip. The next day Cornelius sent two servants and a soldier to Joppa to find Peter. At the same time, Peter went up on a housetop to pray. It was noon, and Peter was hungry. While the food was prepared, Peter had a vision. He saw a sheet come down from heaven. On the sheet were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and birds. A voice said, Get up, Peter! Kill and eat. The voice told Peter that he could eat any animal on the sheet. This happened three times. While Peter was thinking about the vision, the three men appeared at his gate. They explained that Cornelius was a good man who believed in God. They told Peter that an angel had told Cornelius to send for Peter and listen to his message. The men were supposed to take Peter to Cornelius. Peter traveled with the men back to Caesarea. When they arrived at Cornelius home, they found many friends and relatives gathered there. Peter told the group, You know that a Jew is not to associate with a foreigner, but God has helped me see that no person is common or unclean. That s why I came. Now, why did you send for me? DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Matthew 28:19-20 Monday: Psalm 23:1 Tuesday: Psalm 23:3 Wednesday: Luke 10:36 Thursday: Acts 10:34 Friday: Psalm 23:6 Saturday: Luke 10:27 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Matthew 28:19-20 Cornelius explained how the angel had appeared to him and told him to send for Peter. Cornelius said, We are all waiting to hear everything the Lord tells you to say. Peter told the group that he understood that God accepts everyone in every nation who believes in Him. Peter told Cornelius and the people about Jesus. Peter explained how John baptized Jesus and how Jesus did good things and healed sick people. Then Peter told them how Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Peter told them that Jesus commanded the disciples to preach and tell everyone about Him. Many people believed that Jesus is the Son of God and were baptized. Peter stayed with them for several days. based on Acts 10 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Peter and Cornelius section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child learned that the Antioch church sent help to the Jerusalem church. God used the church to minister in love to people in need. Does your family minister through your church? What needs do you see in your community and around the world? CHURCH KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God uses the church to meet the needs of people in the community and around the world. THE ANTIOCH CHURCH HELPED The people who believed in Jesus began to move to different countries. When these believers arrived at new cities, they would tell the people there about Jesus. The believers told the people how Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Some of the believers moved to a city called Antioch, and just like in other places, these believers began to tell the people about all that Jesus had done. God helped these believers share with the people of Antioch, and many believed that Jesus is the Son of God. LIVE IT OUT: Talk with your child about ways your church supports the work of God, whether in your community, state, nation, or in the world. Help your child choose a ministry at church and decide how to support that ministry. For example, she could sponsor a food drive to support a local food bank. DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Galatians 6:9 Monday: Psalm 119:46 Tuesday: Psalm 138:1 Wednesday: Luke 15:32 Thursday: Acts 11:29 Friday: Psalm 119:167 Saturday: Psalm 84:4 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Galatians 6:9 The church in Jerusalem heard about the new believers in Antioch and decided to send Barnabas to teach people more about Jesus and encourage the new believers. Barnabas was a good man. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he had a lot of faith. Barnabas saw so many people believe in Jesus that he went to Tarsus to get Saul and bring him to Antioch to help. For a year, Saul and Barnabas met with the church at Antioch and taught many people. Antioch is where believers in Jesus were called Christians for the first time. One day, some prophets came from Jerusalem to the church in Antioch. One prophet was named Agabus. Agabus told the Antioch church that a severe famine would come to Judea, the country where Jerusalem was located. There would be no rain, and people would have a hard time finding food to eat. The members of the church in Antioch wanted to help those who would be in need during the famine. Each person gave what he was able to give. When they had collected everything, Barnabas and Saul took the gifts to the believers in Judea. based on Acts 11:19-30 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the The Antioch Church Helped section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, your child heard about the miraculous rescue of Peter from prison. While Peter was awaiting execution, the church was praying! God sent an angel to free Peter to continue the work of spreading the gospel. For whom does your family pray? GOD KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God has concern and care for all people. PEOPLE PRAYED FOR PETER Peter was arrested and put in jail. Sixteen of King Herod s soldiers guarded Peter, but Peter s church friends did not give up. They prayed and prayed for Peter. It was the night before Peter was to be put to death. He was locked in chains between two soldiers, and two soldiers guarded the door. Peter slept. Suddenly, an angel appeared, and Peter s prison cell was bright with light. Quick, get up! the angel said. Get dressed. Put on your sandals and your cloak. Then follow me. The chains fell off Peter s hands! LIVE IT OUT: Help your child commit to a time of prayer every day. Assist your child in writing a list of people whom he knows who need prayer. On the top of his paper tell him to write the verse: Pray for one another. James 5:16, followed by a list of names and needs. Encourage him to place the list in a visible place. Peter obeyed, but he did not understand what was happening. He thought he was dreaming. The angel led Peter past the first guard post. They walked past the second guard post. They reached the iron gate into the city, and it opened by itself! Peter and the angel walked to the next street, and then the angel disappeared. Peter said, Now I know God sent his angel to rescue me from Herod! He went to Mary s house where his friends were praying. Peter knocked on the door of the gate. A servant named Rhoda came to answer. When Rhoda heard Peter s voice, she was so excited that she ran back inside and left Peter standing outside! DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: James 5:16 Monday: Luke 18:14 Tuesday: Psalm 29:2 Wednesday: Proverbs 21:26 Thursday: Acts 12:5 Friday: Psalm 84:12 Saturday: Proverbs 22:9 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE James 5:16 You re crazy! Peter s friends told Rhoda when she announced who was outside. They said, It s his angel. Meanwhile, still outside, Peter kept on knocking. When his friends finally opened the door, they were amazed! Peter told his friends how God had rescued him from prison. Tell James and the others, Peter said. Then he went away to a safe place. based on Acts 12:5-19 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the People Prayed for Peter section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child heard the story of Paul s commission as a missionary. The Holy Spirit called Paul to travel and tell about Jesus the Savior. Paul became the first missionary he truly shared the truth of Jesus around the world as it was known at that time. COMMUNITY A N D W O R L D KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Missionaries are Christians called by God to tell another group of people the good news about Jesus. PAUL BECAME A MISSIONARY God s Holy Spirit spoke to the people at the Antioch church. I have called Barnabas and Paul to do a special job. The people in the church fasted (did not eat food) and prayed for the two men. They sent Paul and Barnabas to begin a missionary journey. Paul and Barnabas sailed to the island of Cyprus and went to a town called Paphos. They preached in the synagogues there. One government official called for Paul and Barnabas to tell him God s message, but another man with the official was an evil man. He tried to keep the government official from hearing about Jesus. LIVE IT OUT: Research, or help your child research, well-known missionaries. Talk about their lives and what they had to sacrifice to tell others about Jesus. Start with Paul and his missionary journeys in the Book of Acts. Paul literally carried the story of Jesus throughout the known world. DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Acts 1:8 Monday: Acts 13:23 Tuesday: Psalm 19:1 Wednesday: Proverbs 11:21 Thursday: Acts 13:47 Friday: Psalm 95:2 Saturday: Psalm 99:8 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Acts 1:8 Paul stared right at the evil man and said, You are changing God s words. You are evil. God will make you blind for a time because of this. Immediately, the man was blind. The government official was amazed by God s power. The official believed what Paul and Barnabas said about God. Paul and Barnabas sailed to the country of Pisidia and another town called Antioch. They spoke at the synagogue. Paul explained how Jesus was the One promised all through the Scriptures. Paul said, God brought a Savior Jesus! He brings forgiveness from sin. Some of the people begged Paul and Barnabas to tell them more. On the next Sabbath day, Paul and Barnabas returned to preach. Almost everyone in the city came to hear Paul and Barnabas speak, but the synagogue leaders were jealous and began to argue with Paul. Paul and Barnabas boldly said, If the Jewish people reject God s message, then we will share it with the Gentiles! Gentiles were people who are not Jews. The Gentiles were excited to hear about Jesus. Many people believed in Jesus, and the good news spread throughout the whole area. based on Acts 13 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Paul Became a Missionary section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, in today s Bible story your child learned of Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary journey. Paul and Barnabas worked together to teach people and proclaim the good news. God wants people, especially the church, to cooperate willingly. COMMUNITY KIDS A N D W O R L D LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God creates opportunities for people to connect with others. PAUL AND BARNABAS TOLD ABOUT JESUS Paul and Barnabas worked as a team. As they visited cities and spoke about Jesus in the synagogues (Jewish worship places), many people believed the good news. Others insulted Paul and Barnabas and tried to hurt them. When this happened, the two friends would move to a different place and keep speaking bravely about Jesus. They shared the good news about Jesus everywhere they went. In the town of Lystra, Paul and Barnabas met a man who had never walked. Paul saw that the man had faith in God. Stand up! Paul said loudly. The man jumped up and began to walk around. LIVE IT OUT: Has your child learned cooperation? Paul and Barnabas had to work together to accomplish the goal of spreading the gospel. Help your child memorize Ephesians 2:10. Pray with your child that he will continue to walk with God and do those good works created for him. DAILY BIBLE READING Sunday: Ephesians 2:10 Monday: Psalm 136:1 Tuesday: Psalm 95:7 Wednesday: Matthew 19:26 Thursday: Acts 14:23 Friday: Ephesians 3:21 Saturday: Jeremiah 32:27 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Ephesians 2:10 Excited people in the crowd said, The gods have come down to us as people! The people thought Paul and Barnabas were gods! The people called them Zeus and Hermes and tried to worship the men. Paul and Barnabas stopped them. They shouted, Why are you doing this? We are men like you! We want to tell you good news so that you will turn from worthless gods and worship the God who made everything! Some people who had heard Paul preach in other towns arrived on the scene. These enemies convinced the crowd that Paul was really evil. They threw stones at Paul to kill him, but with help from their friends, Paul and Barnabas escaped to a safer place. After some time passed, Paul and Barnabas returned to the towns they first visited. They encouraged their Christian friends to be faithful to God, even in times of trouble. Together, the two men sailed back to their home church in Antioch to report what God had done. based on Acts 14 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today s Bible story was about a woman named Lydia. Paul and his friends met Lydia when they traveled to the city of Philippi. On the banks of a river Paul told Lydia and her friends about the love of Jesus. Lydia believed and began to follow Jesus. How does your family follow Jesus? JESUS KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING People can obey Jesus as a response to His love. PAUL TAUGHT LYDIA ABOUT JESUS Paul and his friends traveled to different towns telling people about Jesus. They went to Philippi in the district of Macedonia, where they stayed for several days. On the Sabbath Paul and his friends went outside the city gate by the river. They had heard that people gathered there to pray on the day set aside to worship God and rest. Paul sat down and talked to the women who were gathered by the river. 20 TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child learned something that happened to Paul and Silas on their second missionary trip. They were thrown in prison, but being in prison did not stop them from telling others about Jesus! How do you use your difficulties to continue to tell about Jesus? COMMUNITY KIDS A N D W O R L D LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Christians are called to tell the people of the world about Jesus. PAUL AND SILAS IN PRISON During Paul s second missionary trip, he and Silas visited many cities. One morning when they were in Philippi, a slave girl who made money telling fortunes came up to them. The girl followed Paul and Silas, crying out, These men are slaves of the Most High God! The slave girl did this for several days and aggravated Paul. Her words were correct, but Paul knew that the girl had an evil spirit in her. Finally, Paul turned to her and healed her in Jesus name. Immediately, she was well! They grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the judges in the marketplace. The owners stirred up an angry mob against Paul and Silas. Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. The judges told the jailer to guard them securely, so the jailer chained them deep inside the prison. There was no way to escape. At midnight, as the other prisoners listened, Paul and Silas sang songs and praised God. Suddenly, a great earthquake shook the prison. The doors opened, and the prisoners chains fell off. When the guard woke and saw the open doors, he panicked. He was very afraid because he thought all the prisoners had escaped. Just as the jailer was about to kill himself with his sword, he heard Paul s voice. Don t harm yourself, said Paul. We are all still here. Immediately, the guard ran into the inner prison. Falling at Paul s feet, he asked, What must I do to be saved? Paul and Silas replied, Believe in Jesus as your Savior and you will be saved. The jailer took Paul and Silas to his house. He washed their wounds and gave them food. Paul and Silas shared the message of Jesus with everyone in the house. The guard and his whole family believed and were baptized. based on Acts 16:16-34 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Paul and Silas in Prison section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

TM THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child heard another Bible story about Paul. In his travels, Paul had many opportunities to tell people about Jesus. Paul even talked to the people in Athens, a city steeped in Greek idol worship. How can you guide your children to help support those who go and tell? COMMUNITY A N D W O R L D KIDS LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING Christians are called to tell the people of the world about Jesus. PAUL TAUGHT IN ATHENS While Paul was waiting for friends in the city of Athens, he noticed something troubling. The city was full of false idols that the people had made. It made Paul sad to see people worshiping false gods. Paul went to the synagogue and taught about Jesus. Every day in the marketplace, he would talk about Jesus to anyone who was there. Some philosophers (men who liked to think, reason, and argue) heard Paul teach. What is this babbler trying to say? they asked one another. He seems to be preaching about foreign gods. Tell us more about this new teaching of yours, they said. What you say sounds strange to us. We want to understand what you mean. Paul spoke respectfully. I see that you are very religious. As I was passing through town, I saw an altar that said TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. I want to tell you about Him! He is the one, true God who made the world and everything in it. He made the people from every nation. He wants everyone to seek Him and find Him. Paul explained that God is not like the gold or silver or stone idols that the people were making and worshiping. God is alive, and He commands all people everywhere to repent and turn away from disobeying Him. Paul also explained that God sent Jesus. When Paul told how Jesus rose from the dead, some people made fun of Paul. Others asked him to come back and tell them more. Because of Paul s teaching, some men and women in Athens became followers of Jesus. based on Acts 17:16-34 TAKE IT FURTHER: Check out the Paul Taught in Athens section of the Bible Studies for Life: Kids Family App.

Part of the crowd yelled one thing. Part of the crowd yelled another thing. The mob became so violent that the soldiers had to carry Paul to the Roman barracks to protect him. Paul could have entered the barracks without facing the crowd who tried to kill him. Instead, he politely asked the commander if he could speak to the people. Paul motioned with his hand and began to speak to the people in their own language. He told them how he met Jesus on the way to Damascus. The people listened quietly until Paul said that God wanted everyone to be saved even Gentiles (non-jews). When they heard that, the people became so angry, they threw down their robes and tossed dust in the air! The Roman commander decided the best way to get the truth from Paul was to have him beaten. As the soldiers grabbed Paul, he announced he was a Roman citizen and entitled to a fair trial. Peter also wrote that wives and husbands should choose to obey God together. Peter told the believers to be compassionate and humble and to not pay back evil for evil. He instructed them to make good choices when they faced problems. Peter challenged them to be full of peace. He explained that God would help and support them when someone treated them poorly. In Peter s second letter, he warned believers to not believe teachers who taught things that were different than the Scriptures. Peter told the believers to make good choices so they would not be led away from Jesus. He urged them to follow what the Scriptures said, and he taught them to live the way Jesus wanted.
