SUPPLIES Bible on stage offering container toy box or other box with an ice pack in it blindfold crown NOTES All yellow highlighted text are cues for audio and visual slides. Assign a volunteer to play slides. Teacher will play a guessing game for the intro. The Bible story is on video. CIRCLE TIME Kids will decorate a crown to remember the story of King Josiah. 3 TEACHER DEVOTIONAL Read: 2 Kings How was King Josiah brave? He was just a boy when he turned his en+re kingdom back towards the heart of God. Josiah became a king when he was eight years old, and early into his reign a priest discovered the Book of the Law inside the temple. Upon reading it, Josiah realized that God s people were living in outright rebellion. They had altars set up to tons of other gods and were living in direct disobedience to everything God had commanded them within that book. Josiah tore his clothes and repented. For the next 18 years, he set out to turn all of his kingdom back towards the LORD. King Josiah burned altars and set fire to the bones of false prophets. He destroyed anything and everything that was not in line with the one, true God. The Bible tells us that, neither before nor a]er Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses, 2 Kings 23:25. It took incredible courage for a young boy king to lead an en+re na+on in repentance. Josiah s peacemaking involved destruc+on, but it did not stop him from making things right. Josiah understood that in order to follow God wholeheartedly, he would have to embark on a full-on war effort. He did, and God honored him for it. God commands us to follow him; heart, soul, mind, strength (Mark 12:33), and this kind of obedience doesn t come without effort. Just like in Josiah s kingdom, there are areas of outright rebellion in our own lives. It could be a long and painful war effort to repent and turn back to God s heart. Peacemaking isn t always a peaceful process, but we are not alone. Jesus is with us in every step, and he promises this to us (Mafhew 28:20). Brave obedience might come at a cost, but it is always worth it. God is faithful, and that is our hope as we walk in obedience. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: because of the LORD s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness, Lamenta+ons 3: When in your life has obedience or repentance come at a cost? How have you seen God s goodness in the midst of that process? How has repentance deepened your understanding of grace? Jesus with us changes everything. How does that promise give you courage to obey? ÓSummit Crea+ve Company. 4 WELCOME Welcome boys and girls. I m so glad you re here! Before we get started with today s lesson, let s review our room rules so we can have the most fun. (Go over room rules. Sample rules: join in, be a friend, be safe, leaders rule.) WORSHIP Ok, let s all join in right now and stand up for worship. Let s do our best singing so we can let God know how much we love him! (Play a few songs for kids to sing and dance to.) FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD (Share with kids how God asks us to love all his children through giving and praying. Talk about a global or local outreach program and encourage kids to give by collec+ng an offering.) INTRO Show Series Graphic: Thurman Is Brave Today we re going to meet a new friend and see how God helped him be brave. His name is Thurman and he s a scaredy cat. (Point to series graphic.) You know what, some+mes I m a scaredy cat, too. But some+mes I can be brave. What do you say we play a game to see if I can be brave today? This is a guessing game. Can you help me guess what s in the toy box today? We can t look, so I m gonna put on this blindfold. (Put on blindfold.) No peeking. Now I m going to be brave and feel inside the toy box and try to guess what s in here. What if it s something I don t like? Uh oh. I have to be brave. Here we go. (Feel around in the toy box and give three hints about the object: It s smooth! It s cold! I might need this if I fall down and hit my head! A]er each hint ask kids what they think the object is and let them shout out guesses.) I don t know. Let s see if we guessed it. (Pull out ice pack.) It s an ice pack! Great guessing. I think I was brave to guess without looking. This month Thurman is going to learn about some people in the Bible who were brave, too. They were brave because God helped them be brave. 5 Why was King Josiah different than most kings? (He was just a lifle boy and he was good.) What did he want the people to do? (Read the Bible.) How was Thurman brave? (He jumped out of the big tree.) Great listening! God helped King Josiah and Thurman be brave. We can be brave, too, because God helps us be brave! Can you say, God helps me be brave, on the count of three? One two three God helps me be brave! Great! Let s shout that one more +me God helps me be brave! Bible Verse (Open Bible.) The Bible says, Be strong and brave. God is with you wherever you go. Show Verse: Be strong and brave. God is with you wherever you go, Joshua 1:9. Let s all stand up and say that verse together with mo+ons. Follow me. Be strong (Flex one arm muscle.) and brave. (Flex the other arm muscle.) God (Point up with one finger.) is with you (Point to your heart.) wherever you go, (Hold hand to forehead and survey the distance.) Joshua 1:9. (Open your palms in front of you like you re opening a book.) (Prac+ce verse a couple +mes using whisper voices, silly voices, loud voices, slow, fast, etc. Then have kids sit back down, get quiet, fold hands, and close eyes to pray.) Great Job! Let s pray! PRAYER Dear God, thank you for helping lifle King Josiah be brave. Thanks for helping us be brave, too. We love you a lot! In Jesus name, amen. BIG GROUP GAME Today we re going to play a game called King Says to help us remember the story of lifle King Josiah. I am going to pretend to be King Josiah. (Put on crown.) I will say, King says, and give you an ac+on to do. Then you will do it. But some+mes I will give you an ac+on to do without saying, King says. If you do the ac+on and I haven t said, King says, then you have to sit down. Whoever is the last one standing is the winner. Got it? Great! Scratch your nose. Nod your head. Rub your tummy. Before we do the last few King Says ac+ons, I need my adult leaders to go get ready for Circle Time. Okay. Ready kids? Touch your elbow. Pretend to blow a bubble. Moo like a cow. CIRCLE TIME Ok kids are you ready? It s Circle Time! When you hear the Circle Time song, use your slow, walking feet, find a circle and sit right down. 7 THURMAN IS BRAVE Preschool Circle Time Week 1: King Josiah SUPPLIES: paper crowns, markers or crayons, and stickers PURPOSE: Kids will decorate a crown to remember the story of King Josiah. Sit down and say names. ASK: How old was Josiah when he became king? (8 years old) How did God help Josiah be brave? (He read the Bible to people.) Who can help you be brave? (God) SAY AND SHOW: Today we re going to decorate crowns to remind us that God helped King Josiah be brave and he ll help us be brave, too.
