1 K-2nd May 5-6, 2018 Peter preaches Acts 2 Take a brave step Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. This week is all about taking a brave step. It becomes a lot easier when we remember that our power comes from God! Be prepared to share brave steps you d like to take. Ask kids why they made a flame! Remember to prepare kids and their families for something special happening in next weekend: On May 12-13, there are NO CROSSROADS SERVICES. Instead, encourage everyone to sign up for GO Local, invite their friends to join, and show God s love to their communities!

2 GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. LEAPING CHARADES *Break into small groups for this activity. You will need some open space. This game is similar to charades; we ll act out different types of leaping scenarios. Tell the group that a leap is when you take off on one foot, and land somewhere else. Say that we re going to practice leaping, but we re going to pretend we re leaping in imaginary places. Encourage them to imagine and act out what it would be like to take these different kind of leaps: Leap from one soft cloud onto another Leap from a giant cliff into the ocean Leap across a river of hot lava Take the smallest leap possible across a tiny ant Leap onto a very cold iceberg in the ocean Leap onto a super hot giant oven Take a backwards leap Take a sideways leap Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here! Let s start today off by worshipping God! Everybody stand up and great ready to dance and sing! Music Video: Superhero Ask: Okay, you can have a seat. What kinds of things did you act out in Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) Yep, all kinds of jumping and leaping! We imagined we leaped on clouds, across lava, on top of buildings... Say: Let s try something out. Everybody, stand up! (Let kids stand.) On the count of three, hop forward as FAR as you can. Ready? 1-2-3: HOP! (Let kids respond.) Nice work! Did you have to be brave to do that? (No!) Say: Okay...what if you were standing at the very edge on top of a building, and you had to hop to the next building? (Click to show image of building.) Would you have to be brave to try that? (Let kids respond.) Of course! It would be way scarier, and there s a lot of risk in trying that! Say: Let s check out a movie clip about someone who takes some pretty brave steps, even when everyone else is running away. As you watch, pay attention to how he shows bravery.even if it doesn t turn out like he plans! Video: Early Man / Valley Invasion

4 TAKING A LEAP PETER TAKES A BRAVE STEP Ask: So how did that main character, Dug, show bravery? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he went back for his friend, even when everyone else ran away. And then he literally leaped in the air to take down the villain! Say: For the last few weeks, we ve been talking about a guy named Peter, who had to be pretty brave to follow Jesus. Even though there were times when he was really afraid, he had to take a brave step actually, LOTS of brave steps to keep on following Jesus. Say: So let s talk about another part of Peter s story. He took a leap too. He didn t actually jump, like Dug. He did something else brave. So here s a few things to know before we watch: a. After Jesus died and came back to life, AND showed everyone that he really is the Son of God, he went home to heaven. b. Before He left, Jesus told Peter and the other disciples that he would send something to help them. Something that would give them power to do miracles, and help them be brave. Say: We re going to watch a video to see what happened. As you watch, consider: what leap did Peter take? Video: God s Story / Peter Preaches Say: What an amazing story! Peter and his friends were waiting for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is when God comes to live inside us. It means he can help us do things that we wouldn t be able to do on our own. Say: Once the Holy Spirit came to Peter, he did something that might have been scary at first, but God helped him. What big brave leap did Peter take? (Let kids respond.) That s right, he went outside and started talking to people about Jesus! Ask: If you all think that was a brave choice to make, give me a thumbs up. (Let kids respond.) I agree! Ask: Could Peter have talked to all those people who spoke different languages on his own? (Let kids respond.) No! He needed Jesus help to take that brave leap. Say: Even though it was a hard thing to do, and Peter might have been worried about talking to all those people, he knew that Jesus would help him. And because he knew Jesus would help him, he didn t have to be afraid!

5 JOSHUA 1:9 HOW CAN WE BE BRAVE? Say: I love hearing about how Peter was able to do brave things with Jesus help. It lets me understand that I can do brave things with Jesus help too. If you all think that YOU can do brave things with Jesus, on the count of three, shout Yes I can! Ready? 1, 2 3! (Let kids shout out.) Awesome job! Say: There s a verse in the Bible that helps us remember this. We talked about it last week, and we re going to practice it again this week! Let s all read it together right now: Slide: Joshua 1:9 This is my command be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Say: Great job! Now, I m going to give you some hand motions that go along with this verse, and then we ll read it again. Ready? This is my command (pretend to hold an open book in front of you) Be strong and courageous (hold arms up and pretend to flex muscles) Do not be afraid or discouraged (shake your head and finger no ) For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (hug yourself) Say: Ready to read it again with the motions? All right, let s do it! (Read the verse again and model motions.) Great job everybody! This verse tells us that no matter what happens, God is ALWAYS with us. That means that whenever we want to take a brave leap into something, He is here to help us do it. Say: Hmm...so what kind of brave things does God want us to do? I m going to read some things to you, and if you think you need to be brave to do them, then show me your strongest muscle pose and yell, Brave! Ready? Doing something right, even when your friends don t like it. Brave, or not brave? Telling the truth, even though it might get you in trouble. Brave, or not brave? Talking to friends about Jesus. Brave, or not brave? Trusting that God will take care of you, even when you re scared. Brave, or not brave?

6 GO LOCAL 2018 WORSHIP AND PRAYER Say: Yep, all those things are brave leaps that God might want you to take! And we can t do it on our own...we need the Holy Spirit to help us! Say: Next weekend, there s a really cool opportunity to put bravery into practice, and take a big, brave leap! Instead of having church in a building, we re ALL going to take part in something called GO Local! Say: GO Local is when we all work together as a TEAM, and show love to our communities in all kinds of cool ways. There s lots of awesome projects that you can do with your family, and it s a great time to invite your friends to do something that s both fun, and shows love to others. So remember, don t come to Kids Club next week: instead, go out and show love to the world by serving them! Say: We re going to sing some worship songs to God now. Worship is a way that we can spend time with God. It helps us be close to him, and guess what? Being closer to him helps us take brave leaps! Let s all stand up and spend some time with God! This first song is about following Jesus. After that, we ll sing about how we belong to God! Music Video: Open My Eyes Pray: Thank God for helping us be brave, and ask him to help us take a brave leap this very week.

7 Goal: Kids will (1) understand what it means to take a leap, (2) recognize the brave act Peter took in today s story and (3) declare one brave act they will take this week. Why? We ll never be truly brave unless we start to act bravely. We want kids to practice that right away, while they are young. Tip: Make an example before class to show kids when they make the activity! GET TO KNOW KIDS Go around the group and have each kid say (1) their name and (2) their favorite TV show RESPOND TO THE STORY 1. Did Peter take a brave leap all by himself? (no) 2. Who helped Peter to take a brave leap in today s story? (Jesus, the Holy Spirit) 3. What did Peter do once the Holy Spirit came to him? (preached) 4. Have you ever been worried or afraid to do something? What was it? 5. What brave leap would you take if you weren t afraid of anything? BLOWING FLAMES (See image on next page*) Give each kid a cardboard tube, 1 piece of red tissue paper, and 1 piece of orange tissue paper. Tell kids to cut or tear their tissue paper into thinner strips (it doesn t really matter how big or small the strips are). Then tape the strips inside one end of the toilet paper roll, so that the strips are hanging out of it. Blow through the tube, and the flames will start blowing! *Remind kids that next weekend, May 12-13, is GO Local, and there will be no regular Kids Club services. The deadline to sign up has already passed, but there will be other things they can do this year to serve and be a part of the CHURCH.

8 EXTRA TIME: MEMORIZE THE VERSE Using the same motions from large group, have kids repeat the verse after you in small phrases. Do this as many times as you like: This is my command (pretend to hold an open book in front of you) Be strong and courageous (hold arms up and pretend to flex muscles) Do not be afraid or discouraged (shake your head and finger no ) For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (hug yourself)
