Math: Review counting by tens together, from 1 to 100. Show the child a dime. Explain that a dime is worth ten cents. When we count dimes, we count by tens. Place three dimes in front of the child. Ask the child, How many cents do we have? Have the child count by tens. The answer is, Thirty cents. Repeat for various amounts. Have the child shop in a pretend store. Lay out several toys and label them with prices that are multiples of ten. Have the child pretend to buy a toy. He must read the price tag, and then count out the correct number of dimes. Have the child complete worksheet 69 independently. Lesson 69-Page 1
18 Language Arts: Art: Read Hello, Baby Beluga. Have the child answer the following questions using complete sentences as often as possible: o What kind of sea animal is Baby Beluga? (He is a kind of whale.) o What color is Baby Beluga when he is young? (He is dark gray.) o What color will he be when he gets older? (He will turn white.) o Where does Baby Beluga live? Math: Use the bathtub or kitchen sink to introduce some simple physics concepts. Give the child a small boat or bowl that floats. Let him experiment with how many marbles, pebbles, plastic animals, or other objects he can add to the boat before it tips or sinks. Have the child guess how many objects can be added, and then test the guess. Keep a tally sheet of the results of the tests. Use worksheet 70 to create a bar graph that displays the results of the experiment. Language Arts: Read the following story about Jonah: God told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh where the people were doing evil things. God wanted Jonah to warn the people that if they did not repent and Lesson 70-Page 1
22 change their ways, then God was going to destroy their city. Jonah did not want to go, so he ran away. He got on a ship and tried to hide, but God knew where he was. God sent a big storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of sinking. All the men on the ship were very scared. Jonah told them he was running away from God, and it was his fault that the storm had come. Jonah told them to throw him into the sea, and then the storm would stop. The men were scared to throw him in, but they tossed him overboard and the storm became calm. God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah, and he stayed inside the fish for three days and nights. Jonah was sorry for what he had done, and he asked God to forgive him. God told the fish to spit Jonah out of its stomach onto the dry land. Then he told Jonah again to go to Nineveh. Jonah obeyed the Lord and he went to Nineveh. Jonah told the people that God said their city would be destroyed in 40 days if they did not change. The people listened and stopped doing evil. God did not destroy their city. Have the child answer the following questions using complete sentences as often as possible: o Why did Jonah run away from God? (He did not want to go to Nineveh.) o Why do you think he did not want to go? (Answers will vary.) o Where did Jonah hide? (He hid on a ship.) o What did God do? (He sent a big storm. He sent a big fish to swallow Jonah.) o Did Jonah finally obey? (Yes.) o What happened to the city of Nineveh? (It was not destroyed. The people listened to Jonah and changed from their evil ways.) o Discuss this verse. The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). o How could this have been an encouragement to Jonah? Physical Education: Sing Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. Touch each body part as you sing its name. Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes And eyes, and ears, and mouth, and nose Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.
