3 vw Overview vw This assessment was developed to be used together with the. After learning each new skill in the, the child s mastery of the skill can be evaluated by using the accompanying assessment. The assessment is designed to identify the specific weakness the child may have in any step of the reading process. The child that is being evaluated uses the assessment sheet that has the chart with the words only. The teacher or parent that is evaluating uses the teacher s version. The teacher s version is the sheet that has the chart with the or words, the boxes in the chart, and the tallying tables. The evaluator marks down any mistakes and the child makes as he or she is reading. Above and below each and is a box. Any incorrect pronunciation of an should be noted in the box above it. For example, If the child mistakenly calls a a, a should be written in the box above the. Any incorrect pronunciation of a should be noted in the box below it. For example, if the child mistakenly reads a as a, a should be written in the box below the. Since the to mark as opposed to below the there is a box on top of the, assessment tests only the the mistakes that the child makes as he or she reads. Each new skill has its own assessment. Since mastery of and are so crucial they are always assessed together with the new skill taught. For example, while assessing the students mastery of the rules, boxes are still provided to mark down any mistakes made in the and. The box that relates to the specific new skill is shaded gray. Upon completion of the assessment for each specific skill, the mistakes in and are tallied as well. This system allows the parent or teacher to record and correct any difficulty the child is experiencing so that every. child can become fluent in A child can make up to 5 different mistakes on an evaluation and still be a confident reader. If the child makes the. or same mistake more than once, then the child may need help with that particular Additionally, there are three versions of every test [A, B &C]. The purpose of this is for re-testing, so the student shouldn t recognize the test material resulting in an inaccurate re-test. Enclosed is a sample evaluation so that the evaluator can see how children should be evaluated.
