Beth Israel, 7117 North Crawford Ave., Lincolnwood, Illinois Phone: May/June 2017 Dear Congregant, I hope that you enjoyed a most meaningful Pesach. Below you will find an abridged version of an article of mine that was recently published in the Chicago Jewish News. I look forward to davening, learning and schmoozing with you in our Shul on any or all of the seven days of the week. Wishing everyone a Chag Shavuot Sameach, Rabbi James M. Gordon, JD Rabbi Gordon s Message Think Outside the Box According to the Cambridge Dictionary (online) the definition of the expression to think outside the box, is: to think imaginatively using new ideas instead of traditional or expected ideas. The art of thinking outside the box was exhibited by the Women of Israel when it came to the building of the Mishkan (portable Continued on page 4

President s Perspective It is with a profound sense of gratitude that I write to you for the last time as your President. I thank the many members of our congregation who have helped me to meet the challenges of this office. Over the last three years, I have continued to marvel at the commitment of many of our members to the future of our Shul. The Shul officers and the board of directors consist of individuals with diverse talents who volunteer their time to make things work. There are also, of course, many members not on the board of directors who make meaningful contributions to our activities, and I thank them for what they do, and hope that they will continue. Volunteer organizations need volunteers, and each one of us needs to contribute as best we can. As I mentioned in my last article, the Future of our Shul Committee has been established to work toward charting a viable path for our future. This work will continue over the next months, and as progress is made, you will be kept informed. By the end of this year, if not sooner, I expect plans for our future to be discussed openly, adopted and implemented. On another note, as you know, synagogues across the world have been forced to respond to a new security environment, where vandalism and other attacks on our institutions is a real possibility. We are taking measures to protect you as well as our building. These measures include implementing a grant received from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security through the State of Illinois to protect our building with new cameras, perhaps a fence and other measures. Also, we are developing a security plan so that in the event of an emergency, we can respond appropriately. Finally, perhaps the most significant event to occur over my recent term in office was the retirement of Rabbi and Chavie Lehrfield. We had a beautiful retirement party for them, and wish them well in their retirement. Many of us, including myself, continue to miss their presence. I am grateful to Rabbi Gordon for providing rabbinical leadership over the last several months, and for working on our movie nights, Yom Ha Shoah program, and legal lecture series, not to mention assuring our daily minyanim. And, of course, I must thank our staff, Chava, Sue, Jadviga and Richard for making my job manageable. Larry Miller Page 2

Rabbi s Gordon s Message continued from page 1 Tabernacle). In the final portion of the Book of Exodus Parashat P kudei, we learn about the construction of various rooms and furnishings in the Mishkan. One of these items was the Kiyor HaN choshet (Copper Laver) which was used by the Kohanim to wash their hands and feet prior to performing their service in the Tabernacle. Water was also used from this utensil to help prove the innocence of a woman who was mistakenly suspected by her husband of being adulterous. As stated in the Torah: VaYa-ahs et HaKiyor N choshet v et kano n choshet b Marot HaTzovot ahser tzavu petach Ohel Moed. And he made the Laver of copper and its base of copper from the Mirrors of Legions that (the Women of Israel) gathered at the Tent of Meeting (Exodus 38:8). Wanting to make a significant contribution to the construction of the Mishkan, according to Rashi, the Women of Israel donated their copper mirrors. [These same women refused to contribute their valuables to the construction of the Golden Calf]. Moses was, at first, taken aback by this contribution because the mirrors were used by the women to help entice their husbands to be intimate with them. After coming home from a day of intense slave labor, the men were exhausted and simply wanted to go to sleep. Using the mirrors, the women would beautify themselves enticing their husbands to be intimate, thus ensuring the continuity of the Jewish people. After first rejecting the Women of Israel s well-intended gifts, the Almighty commanded Moses to accept the copper mirrors and use them to build the Kiyor (Laver). After all, what could be more holy than these mirrors? Without them, the Israelites would not have continued for future generations. The mirrors are appropriately labeled in the Torah as Marot HaTzovot (the Mirrors of Legions). Because of these mirrors, legions of future Jews were born. By strongly advising Moses to accept the copper mirrors, the Kodush Boruch Hu (Holy One Blessed Be He) not only endorsed the contributions of the Women of Israel, but also let these women along with future generations of women (and men) know that, when it comes to figuring solutions to difficult challenges, in addition to conventional ideas, it is also important to think outside the box. Many times we get paralyzed in our thinking. When regular, expected ideas don t work we simply give up. From the Women of Israel (and the response of the Almighty), we learn that, whenever it comes to achieving any task or project no matter how big or small, in addition to conventional ideas, it is important to contribute creative ideas as well. Whether it be building/ improving our business, family, Shul or Jewish homeland let us all start thinking outside the box even more than we already do. Y Page 4

Shavuot 5777/May 30 (eve) June 1, 2017 Shavuot is a two day major Jewish festival. The word Shavuot literally means "weeks." It is so named because it falls exactly seven weeks after Passover as prescribed by the Torah. Shavuot is observed as the anniversary of the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Thus, Shavuot is actually the birthday of the Torah and the anniversary of Judaism. The giving of the Torah was far more than a historical event. It was a far-reaching spiritual event that touched the essence of Jewish souls then and for all time. Our Sages compared it to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. We became His special nation (His Bride) and He became our (G-d) (Our Bridegroom). Each year, Shavuot serves to re-awaken and to strengthen our special relationship with G-d. We do so by rededicating ourselves to the observance and study of the Torah our most precious heritage. Shavuot should be honored as all other Biblical Holydays. Work and school attendance are not permitted. s are kindled both nights of Shavuot and Kiddush is recited before the Festival dinners. It is customary to decorate the home with flowers and other greenery (plants, foliage, etc.) as symbols of the green mountainside of Sinai and/ or the agricultural aspect of this Holyday (Shavuot, as all other Pilgrimage Festivals, has agricultural significance). Dairy foods, such as blintzes, cheesecake, etc., are the traditional fare for this Holyday. Of the many reasons advanced for this unusual custom, the most popular is that the Torah is compared to "milk and honey." Therefore, on the Holyday, when we honor the Torah, what better, more tasty way of doing so is there than by eating food reminding us of the Torah. Tradition suggests that we devote as much time as possible on Shavuot to the study of the Torah. In many communities, it is customary to spend the entire first night in study of the Torah. This all-night study is called the "Mishmar" (Nightwatch). King David's Yahrzeit (anniversary of death) oc- Page 6 curs on Shavuot. Many pious Jewish people honor his memory by reciting his most famous work, the Psalms (T'hillim). David composed 150 such prayers, many used in our daily and Holyday Synagogue services. The Biblical Book of Ruth is read on Shavuot. It relates how the heroine Ruth embraced our faith, even as every Jew today symbolically ought to renew his attachment to his/her faith on this Holyday. The Ten Commandments are read in the Synagogue from the Torah Scroll to inspire our people with the beautiful message of loyalty to the faith of Judaism. This Holyday actually has six (6) different names: Shavuot Feast of "Weeks," Symbolizing the seven weeks from Passover: x x Pentecost Greek term meaning "50." Philo and Josephus denote the Holyday by this name because it occurs exactly 50 days from Passover; x x Atzeret Conclusion of Passover. Talmudic term to indicate the close relationship between both Holydays; x x Chag Hakatzir Harvest Festival, Climax of the grain harvest in ancient days; x x Zman Matan Toratanu Season of Giving of the Torah. The revelation at Sinai when the Torah was given to mankind; and x x Yom Habikkurim Day of First Fruits. Ripening of first fruits which were brought to the Temple in appreciation of G-d's bountiful blessing. A special prayer known as Akdamut is read on Shavuot with a melody that has been handed down for many, many centuries. It is a fitting preface and introduction to the reading of the Torah. This Piyut (poetry prepared for the prayer book) is written in Aramaic and is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the greatness of G-d in the creation of the world and the acceptance of G-d's Torah by the People of Israel. The second portion speaks of the sacrifices that the Jewish people experienced for their Torah and their hopes for a return to Eretz Yisroal.

THE TORAH The Torah is composed of two parts; the Written Law and the Oral Law. The Written Torah contains the Five Books of Moses. Together with the Written Torah, Moses was also given the Oral Law which explains and clarifies the Written Law. It was transmitted orally from generation to generation and eventually transcribed in the Talmud and Midrash. Throughout the generations our people have studied these works, commenting upon them, clarifying their meaning, deriving practical applications of the principles found in them and codifying the laws derived from them. Thus, a continuous chain of tradition extends throughout the generations, connecting the scholars of the present day to the revelation at Mt. Sinai. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS When G-d revealed himself on Mt. Sinai, our entire people heard his voice proclaiming the Ten Commandments. 1. I am the L-rd your G-d who took you out of the Land of Egypt. 2. You shall have no other gods before Me. 3. Do not take the name of the L-rd your G-d in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. 5. Honor your father and mother. 6. Do not murder. 7. Do not commit adultery. 8. Do not steal. 9. Do not bear false witness. 10. Do not covet. These ten statements range from the highest and most refined concept of the belief in the oneness of G-d to the basic laws which every society GIVING AND RECEIVING Rabbi Yitzchak of Gur, the Chassidic Sage, said: Why is Shavuot referred to as The Time of Giving of the Torah and not The Time of Receiving of the Torah? Because the time of the giving of the Torah was only at Mount Sinai, whereas the time of receiving of the Torah is everyday. has found necessary to enforce, such as the prohibition against murder and stealing. The words of our Torah are compared to water: As water surrounds the earth, so does the Torah encompass the world. As water is given free, so is the Torah given to us free. As water is the life of the world, so too is the Torah. As water (rain) comes from heaven, so does the Torah. As water refreshes the soul, so does our Torah refresh the soul. As water cleanses mankind, the Torah cleans those who cling to it. As water comes down in drops and turns into a stream of torrents, so does the Torah: you learn a few laws today, a few tomorrow, until it becomes a flowing river of knowledge to you. As water leaves high places and flows down to low places, so the Torah leaves those who are proud and stays among those who are humble of spirit. As water will not keep fresh in vessels of gold and silver, but only in an earthen pitcher, so the Torah will not stay except in one who regards himself to be as humble as an earthen vessel. Finally, as in the case of water, the great man will not be ashamed to say to a smaller man, "Give me some water to drink," the great Torah scholar will not be ashamed to learn from a lesser student. MILLIONS OF WITNESSES G-d gave the Torah in the presence of all Israel... six hundred thousand male adults aged 20-60, many more older men, women and children, together with a multitude of all other people ("erev rav"). In all, there were several million living witnesses who saw the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Present also ALL the Jewish souls who were ever to come down to live upon the earth. (YOU were also there!) Every one of us solemnly proclaimed "Naaseh Venishma"... "We shall do and obey." Each one of us was made a party of that sacred covenant between G-d and his people Israel.

Update: Remembering and Honoring Those We Have Lost in the Shoah As you may remember, I wrote an article in the fall of 2015 about a project in which I am involved. It is a memorial for the Jewish people, including my father's close relatives and many others, who perished during the Shoah from my shtetl Pered in Slovakia: To honor the memory of those who died and to bring attention to the dangers of unchecked hatred, we are erecting a memorial in Pered. This memorial will honor the memory of a Jewish community that existed for over 8 centuries including my father, grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins, and all of the other Jews who perished in the Shoah, who are being forgotten in the town where they lived. The project has been nearly two years in the planning but construction is now underway and we are hoping to dedicate the memorial in June Some members of our Shul generously responded to the earlier article with donations and I would like to express my gratitude to them for helping to honor the Jews of Pered. There is still a need for further funds to complete the memorial, hence, this appeal. Donations to the Shoah Chesed Fund, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit, will be forwarded to the Slovakian charity which is building the memorial. I appreciate your understanding and if you wish to help to create a memorial to the Jews of Pered lost in the Shoah, please contact me at sanyi000@aol.com or phone: Alexander Goldstein Skokie April 10, 2017

From the Catering Department About a month or so ago, we had an old-fashioned very large kiddush, 200 guests. It was so good to see so many people join us for a Shabbat lunch. It was a very large menu and some of our favorites were on the table, like lox & bagels and the large whitefish, just two of a wide variety of choices. I want to thank all the Sisterhood ladies who came in to help fold the lox & make the trays. I also want to thank the ladies who helped serve the whitefish and made the lines move along more efficiently. Thank you for making my job more pleasurable. You all deserve a yasher koach. It would be wonderful to see more occasions like this one because it brings so many people into our Shul. Every time you choose to celebrate a simcha with our Shul is a joy for all of us. I also want to thank Myrna and Jadwiga and Richard. They make my job easier and they re so dependable. I want to share a hint with you. I have a small round, rust colored flat stone that I run under the water and then place in a plastic container that holds brown sugar. This magic stone keeps the sugar soft, always. I think I got it thru a small catalog that came in the mail. If you ever see it advertised, it s worth the cost (quite inexpensive). Does anyone else still have that kitchen drawer that holds junk? I have one that has sweet corn holders, a cherry pitter, old fashioned bottle openers, beer can openers, a garlic press, hand-held two wheeled knife sharpener, a special opener for canned milk that punches two holes at once, a mushroom brush, a replacement pourer for oil, an oven thermometer and a small yellow plastic piece that twists into an orange for juice. Somehow I can t get rid of any of these things; you never know when you ll need them. Once upon a time all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer a little boy came with an umbrella. THAT S FAITH. When you throw a baby in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. THAT S TRUST We go to bed every night without any assurance of being alive the next morning. THAT S HOPE. On an old woman s shirt was written, I am not 80 years old, I m Sweet 16 with 64 years experience. THAT S ATTITUDE. And to paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers (after having seen Psycho) If you find one, what s your plan? Bon Appetit Shirley Derdiger Page 14
