3 The mitzvah is to take two goats that are similar in age, height and appearance. Yoma 62a

4 Notwithstanding the fact that they are identical, one goat is dedicated to Gd and one is dispatched to Azazel. In the same way falsehood can make itself look like truth, and one might not be able to differentiate between them. Therefore the goats were drawn by lots: the Jews relied upon G-d to reveal which goat was for holiness and which was for the Other Side. We, too, must rely upon G-d to show us the difference between falsehood and truth. Likutei Halakhot IV p.416

6 The mitzvah of the two goats required animals who s appearance was exactly alike. When the Kohen Gadol placed lots upon them, he prayed that the lot upon which was written For G-d came into his right hand, while the one inscribed For Azazel went into his left hand. Aiz (goat) alludes to Azut (boldness or brazenness). Boldness is the azut of holiness (the right side); brazenness is the azut of the Other Side (the left side). The lottery showed that it is nearly impossible to distinguish between boldness and brazenness in any situation - one can only pray he makes the right decision. The lottery was performed on Yom Kippur, since our fasting on Yom Kippur rectifies Adam s sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Adam s sin represents arrogance and the tree represents Haman, an arrogant person who also drew lots (Esther 3:7). Therefore, the rectification is effected through a lottery performed by the Kohen Gadol, who represents humility. Likutei Halakhot I, p.90a

9 One goat was selected to be sanctified in the Inner Sanctuary of the Temple in order to effect forgiveness for sin. The other goat was thrown down to Azazel, also to effect forgiveness of sin. The human mind cannot comprehend how these identical korbanot offered to opposing forces, can generate the same result. We must have faith that our deeds bring about rectification. So too, we must believe that whenever we choose to do good or bad, we bring about great rectifications, filtering the good from the bad of the Tree of Knowledge and drawing down forgiveness for our sins.
