The book of Daniel is the segue into the next phase of God s redemptive narrative The times of the Gentiles is a new lens through which the Bible will present information to us The camera is being pulled back to view things from a broader perspective The book of Daniel is the mechanism by which this move from local to global really starts Review: After the most devastating series of events in their history God gives them the most encouraging message He could have given them Daniel speaks the unfiltered truth to the king Nebuchadnezzar was the head of gold We see a decrease in value and an increase in strength Man sees a glorious statue and God sees horrible beasts 1

Daniel 2:44 44"In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. III. Daniel 2 BB. Daniel 2:44 1) It is not until the days of those kings that God sets up His kingdom 2) The Iron stage of the 4 th kingdom has unity the Iron and Clay stage does not 3) Out of the influence the Roman kingdom has in this last time, there will rise to prominence 10 leaders 4) Every era of human history testifies to the fact that we need God 2

III. Daniel 2 BB. Daniel 2:44 5) The kingdom of God will be the last kingdom 6) The kingdom will last forever Daniel 2:45 45"Inasmuch as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will take place in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy." 3

III. Daniel 2 CC. Daniel 2:45 1) The stone cut without hands is not part of the statue 2) The stone cut without hands strikes the statue on its feet 3) All four world kingdoms were crushed at the same time 4) The Gospel message does not include crushing kingdoms III. Daniel 2 CC. Daniel 2:45 5) The stone which destroyed the statue grew into a great mountain and filled the whole earth 4

Psalm 2:8-9 8Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 9'You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.'" III. Daniel 2 CC. Daniel 2:45 5) The stone which destroyed the statue grew into a great mountain and filled the whole earth 6) The stone is Jesus Christ 5

Luke 20: But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'? 18"Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust." III. Daniel 2 CC. Daniel 2:45 7) The stone cut without hands: -will be established in "the time of those kings" -will be of divine origin -will be eternal -It is the earthly return and reign of Christ in His kingdom at His second coming -It will strike at the feet and all four previous empires were crushed at the same time 6

Questions The very best of what man has created the pinnacle of man s achievement will be crushed and will blow away with the wind. What is the only thing that remains? What does that bring to mind when thinking about what we typically focus our time and treasure on in life? How does this vivid picture help us to orient our priorities? What is your gut reaction to this contrast?(matt 6:19-21) Questions What is God s message to Nebuchadnezzar in this dream? How does that message to Nebuchadnezzar speak to us today? 7

III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom (Saucy, The Church in God s Program) 1) The kingdom of God refers to the sovereign rule of God over His creation. Although there is, in the ultimate sense, one kingdom of God, the Scripture uses this term for two distinct aspects of this kingdom. On the one hand, it signifies God s universal, eternal rule over all creation: The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all (Ps 103:19). III. Daniel 2 On the other hand, it refers to the eschatological Messianic kingdom which is to be established in history, which Christ announced as at hand, and for which He taught His disciples to pray. While the first kingdom is ruled directly by God, the second aspect is founded upon covenant promises and ruled through the God- Man, Jesus Christ, the Seed of David. It is the purpose of this mediatorial aspect of the kingdom to establish the reign of God, which is now over the earth, directly upon it, and to make the kingdoms of this world the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ (Rev 11:15b). -Dr. Robert Saucy 8

III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 2) Kingdom involves both the authority (or right to rule) and the throne upon which to exercise that right 3) Daniel is furthering the expectation of an earthly, political, tangible kingdom 4) The context in which Jesus arrives on the scene is the anticipation of the coming of Messiah s kingdom that has been building all throughout the Old Testament III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 5) God says to David, I will build a house for you (2 Sam 7) 9

Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12:1-3) = God promises Land, Seed, and Blessing (amplified by) Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:4-17) = A Kingdom forever and God will be a Father to the future Davidic Kings III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 5) God says to David, I will build a house for you (2 Sam 7) 6) Jesus will reign on David s throne 7) The fulfillment of the Davidic covenant is yet future 8) Jesus offered Israel the kingdom 9) Israel rejects the offer of the kingdom by attributing God s work to Satan 10

III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 10) Following the rejection of Him as Messiah in Matthew 12, Jesus speaks to the people only in parables Matthew 13: All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. 11

Mark 4: With many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to hear it; 34and He did not speak to them without a parable; but He was explaining everything privately to His own disciples. III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 10) Following the rejection of Him as Messiah in Matthew 12, Jesus speaks to the people only in parables 11) The purpose of parables was to hide information from those who did not have ears to hear 12

Matthew 13: And the disciples came and said to Him, Why do You speak to them in parables? 11Jesus answered them, To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand Matthew 13: In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; 15FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL,WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM. 13

Matthew 23: Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. 38 Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! 39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! Luke 19: While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12So He said, A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13 And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, Do business with this until I come back. 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, We do not want this man to reign over us. 14

III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 10) Following the rejection of Him as Messiah in Matthew 12, Jesus speaks to the people only in parables 11) The purpose of parables was to hide information from those who did not have ears to hear 12) Jesus says they will not see Him until they say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Zechariah 12:10 10 I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 15

Hosea 5:15 15I will go away and return to My place Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me. Hosea 6:1-2 1 Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. 2 He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, That we may live before Him. 16

III. Daniel 2 DD. Kingdom 13) The mystery form of the kingdom 14) Jesus upheld their expectation of the kingdom Daniel 2:46 46Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did homage to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and fragrant incense. 17

III. Daniel 2 EE. Daniel 2:46 1) This interpretation opened up Nebuchadnezzar s eyes to a realm he never knew existed 2) This was an encounter with the real, the genuine, the only legitimate power in the universe Daniel 2:47 47The king answered Daniel and said, "Surely your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery." 18

III. Daniel 2 -The Reformers definition of faith: 1. Notitia (def. knowledge). This is essentially knowledge of the facts. 2. Assensus (def. assent, agreement). This is acknowledging the facts to be true. 3. Fiducia (def. assurance, confidence, trust). This is actually what the Bible refers to as trust. Daniel 2:48 48Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 19

Daniel 2:49 49And Daniel made request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king's court. III. Daniel 2 FF. Conclusion 1) This is a comforting passage a message of hope 2) God is sovereign--over everything 3) The one who holds the entire universe in His hands, is intimately involved with and cares about even the details of our lives 4) World empires will rise and fall but God is in control and will make all things right 20
