Week #6 The Stone Daniel 2:34-35, Presented Live February 7, 2016 I. Introduction and review A. Nebuchadnezzar had dreamed a dream of great import B. This dream was given to him by God [2:29] C. The dream foretold the future of the world from a human perspective 1. The statue in the dream pictured: a. A head of gold representing Babylon b. A chest and arms of silver which represented Persia c. An abdomen and loins of bronze which stood for Greece d. And legs of iron depicting the Rome Empire (1) The feet and toes of the statue were part iron and part clay are a representation of an empire yet future (2) the seed of men 2. Then in his dream Nebuchadnezzar saw a rock which destroyed the magnificent statue D. It is this stone to which we are going to look to today II. The Stone of Daniel 2 A. Daniel 2: Information about the stone a. It was cut out a stone (1) This wasn t and accidental act but an intentional one (2) Who cut the stone out? b. From what was this stone cut out? (1) It was cut from a mountain (2) What or who is the mountain Page 1 of 8
(3) The dream is silent on this question (4) The verb to cut out rz;g. gezar (Aramaic) {ghez-ar'} (a) Meaning: 1) to cut, determine 1a) (P'al) determiner (participle) 1b) (Ithp'al) to be cut out (b) Grammar: Stem - Ithp al, Mood - Perfect i) The ithp al stem [hithael in Hebrew] denotes reflexive action ii) E.g.: he flung himself down, or he sold himself, or more commonly he (c) dressed himself The text appears to say that the stone was cut out by itself c. Without hands (1) This statement is used consistently to mean or refer to an act of God (2) Mark 14:58 "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'" (3) The statement ascribed to Jesus was understood to mean by God and that s why they accused Him of blasphemy (4) Colossians 2:8-12 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (5) This passage describes divine action and is credited to Christ d. It struck the statue on its feet, clearly the most unstable or weakest part of the statue Page 2 of 8
e. It crushed them (1) That is the feet of the statue (2) What happens when the feet are crushed? (3) The statue is toppled and now completely vulnerable to the stone f. Then the rock crushed and pulverized the entire statue g. And it became like the chaff or powder which the wind blows away (1) metals such as these have to be pulverized to a very fine consistency in order to be blown away h. The stone then grows into a mountain and then this mountain continues growing until it fills the whole earth (1) This is not a gradual process it is instead a single event (2) Both the demolition of the statue and the expansion of the stone (3) This was not the start of the church and Christianity (4) Some argue that the mountain out of which the stone was cut was Israel (5) Other say it was the Godhead (6) Consider: Genesis 49:24 But his bow remained firm, And his arms were agile, from the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), 2. Some commentators claim that the stone kingdom is not a literal kingdom a. All of the other kingdoms were literal b. The stone kingdom will capture and control the whole earth c. Did Christ teach His disciples to pray for a spiritual kingdom or a literal kingdom when He taught them to pray: Thy kingdom come.? B. Daniel 2: The interpretation by Daniel provides us with these additional pieces of information a. The stone represents a kingdom established by God b. This kingdom, unlike those which proceed it, will never be destroyed c. Nor will it be controlled or supplanted by any one else d. It will destroy and bring an end to all kingdoms Page 3 of 8
proceeding it 2. Who are those kings referred to in verse 44? a. Either the various kingdoms represented by the different metals, or b. They are the kings and kingdoms represented by the ten toes c. I believe that the antecedent of those is the toes d. This type of an event, the stone crashing into the statue cannot happen during the four preceding kingdoms because they are all separated by time and one follows the other e. The establishment of this kingdom will occur during the time or days of the kings and/or kingdoms represented by the toes C. Who or what is this stone it is none other than Jesus Christ and His coming kingdom 1. Remember Jesus during the first part of His earthly ministry proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom 2. He did that until the nation of Israel rejected Him as their Messiah D. But is Jesus represented as a stone anywhere else in the Bible? 1. He was the stone that was smitten a. Ex. 17 and the stone struck in the wilderness [Exodus 17:5-6 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.] b. This understanding is confirmed in 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 2. The stumbling stone a. Isaiah 8:13-14 "It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And Page 4 of 8
He shall be your dread. 14 "Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. b. Romans 9:31-33 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. c. 1 Peter 2:7-8 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone," 8 and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. 3. A rejected corner stone a. Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. b. Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. c. Matthew 21:42-44 Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES '? 43 "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. 44 "And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust." d. Acts 4:10-11 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead-- by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 "He is the STONE Page 5 of 8
WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. e. 1 Peter 2:6-7 For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." 7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone," 4. The stone of removal a. Zechariah 3:9 For behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave an inscription on it,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 5. It is clear that any fair scholar and interpreter must conclude that the stone is Christ and His kingdom a. The same way Daniel said to Nebuchadnezzar that you are the king of gold E. So what does this dream tell us about this kingdom that the Lord Jesus Christ will one establish? 1. It is a supernatural kingdom a. This kingdom will not be brought in by humans, but by God b. Man may make bricks but God makes the stones c. The rock is strong, durable, and firm 2. It will be a sudden kingdom a. It doesn t grow or develop, it happens b. The other kingdoms were built on the ruins of the others, but not this one c. The blow from the stone will be sudden and decisive 3. It is a severe kingdom a. Note the description: it struck, crushed them, became like chaff... the wind carried away, not a trace b. Its impact will be overwhelming c. His return will not be as a sacrificial lamb, but as the lion of the tribe of Judah 4. It will be a sovereign kingdom a. It will fill the whole earth b. He will be absolute ruler Page 6 of 8
c. Everything will be in His control d. The stone comes from heaven and brings heaven to earth 5. It is a successful kingdom a. It will endure forever b. The kingdom will be unconquerable c. It will be without successor F. The effect this portion of the prophecy on Biblical interpretation 1. There are three main viewpoints on the millennial kingdom which the stone represents: amillennial, postmillennial and premillennial 2. Amillennialists believe there will be no millennium kingdom coming but that it was established when Christ came the first time a. That would mean that now the church is that kingdom 3. Postmillenialists believe the church is intended to be God s tool or implement to establish or bring in the millennial kingdom a. They claim that Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom, that is prepare yourself for the kingdom is to come b. Jesus even taught His disciples to pray that the kingdom will come c. It is the next major event on the prophetic horizon d. There are many today who try to plan for and take the actions that they believe will help to establish the kingdom e. But according to Daniel 2 will human effort have anything to do with the establishment of the kingdom 4. The premillenial view holds that the kingdom will come after the final seven years of the Jewish dispensation and that prior to that coming, the church will have been removed from the earth 5. Does this prophecy support the premillennial viewpoint? a. The stone will become a mountain that fill the whole earth suddenly, not gradually b. When Christ came the first time, it was during the time of the Roman Empire, but did He destroy it no c. The Roman empire was not divided into ten kingdoms at the time of Christ s first advent d. Although Christ is now the cornerstone of the Church Page 7 of 8
III. and a stone of stumbling to nonbelievers, He has not become the stone that smites as of yet e. The stone of Daniel chapter 2 will smite and destroy all of the nations, but the church and Christ before her did not attempt any such thing f. The church is not a kingdom or any manner of political realm, but instead the bride of Christ 6. This dream which God gave to Nebuchadnezzar and which God had Daniel interpret for him and for us, supports only a premillenial position A few closing thoughts A. It is easy for us to become upset at what is happening in the world around us 1. Eg. Threats of war and acts of terror 2. The prosperity and success of evil leaders 3. But we know that God, not world leaders, is in control 4. He decides the outcome of history 5. His kingdom is unassailable and we are secure in Him B. There is one other kind of rock which our Lord became for us 1. He is the rock of refuge a. Psalm 94:22 But the LORD has been my stronghold, And my God the rock of my refuge. b. 2 Samuel 22:1-3 And David spoke the words of this song to the LORD in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence.
