2 jewish community center of paramus From the Rabbi Rabbi Arthur D. Weiner Passover soon will be upon us. While Passover s law is filled with many observances, some of which are achieved only with great personal effort, Passover s lore is filled with stories, jokes, and even thinly veiled complaints about how hard it is to observe Passover properly. Is it worth it? Why there is so much work associated with this most popular and well-observed holiday? Let me suggest several ideas. 1. Passover requires preparation because liberation requires preparation. One cannot transition from slavery or subjugation to freedom and personal liberty without sacrifice, great effort, or even danger. Similarly, the holiday challenges us not only to recall the experiences of our ancestors as they experienced liberation, but also our responsibilities because we do enjoy freedom. Thus Passover must be preceded with time and efforts that help us get ready and be transformed by it as well. 2. The basic mitzvah of Passover is the removal of chametz (leavened bread and similar products) from our homes. We are literally trying to re-create (for an eight-day period) the conditions that our ancestors experienced at the moment of their liberation from Egypt. Modern food science and technology results in leavened products being found in the strangest of places (medicine, cosmetics, and alcohol, to name a few). This prohibition is extended to even owning chametz or having it in our possession. The removal of chametz takes time, effort, and planning. While the synagogue can do much to assist in this effort (please review all the important resources that we have provided in this issue of the Bulletin), the decision ultimately is made by each adult in each Jewish home. Anything in life that is worth doing involves effort, and we believe the work necessary to celebrate Passover in all its profundity is worthy of our attention and efforts. 3. Passover, like the High Holidays, is an opportunity for real change. Egypt, once mighty, is humbled. The Jewish people, who had known only slavery, poverty, and despair, are redeemed through sign, acts, and miracles. Passover reminds us that the past may influence but does not control our future. We are in charge of our fate. We are responsible for our future. But challenging our assumptions, and creating a path to a better and more uplifting tomorrow, takes planning, effort, and courage. Just as the other great holidays of change, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, are preceded by a 30-day period of reflection, prayer and preparation, so Passover is as well. Passover, like any other Jewish observance, is a result of a conscious decision. We can talk all we want about being commanded, which is so important, but ultimately we will decide how and when to act. So I encourage you, start now. Begin to make the effort to prepare for Passover. I am confident that the work will lead to great personal reward. JCCP Book Club Sunday, April AM We will be discussing The Polish Woman by Eve Mekler. Dina Stein will be our facilitator. Save Monday, June 20, for our last meeting before the summer; book and facilitator to be announced. JCCP SINGERS JOIN US! The JCCP Singers are meeting again with Cantor Weiss to learn songs for our congregational Yom Hashoah program, as well as songs for Yom Ha Atzmaut. No experience is necessary, so please try it out; you might really enjoy it. We will meet on 5 Thursdays at 8:15 p.m. (right after the Minyan): April 7, 14, 21 and 28, and May 5. Please contact any of the Singers or Cantor Weiss with any questions. Before I discuss Passover, we have other happenings in April. April 1 happens to be the first Friday, which means Young Jewish Families service and fun. On April 3, the Israel Affairs Committee is hosting an Israeli film in the evening. On April 4, we have the Monday afternoon weekly discussion group, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, talking about current events or whatever is on their mind, and that evening the Men s Club will get together for some relaxation, too. That s just the first four days! April 10 is the next book club meeting and Hebrew School Family Workshop. I won t go into detail about the Passover schedule because you can find the information elsewhere in the Bulletin. I really look forward to this holiday and the seders. Yes, it s a lot of preparation and hard work, especially for my wife, Dee. But having our immediate and extended family (and some close friends) together, including my 3 1/2-year-old granddaughter, makes it all worth it. Let me end by wishing the entire congregation and your families a zeissen Pesach, and a joyous and happy holiday! Thank You! Dear Friends, I wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rabbi Weiner and our fellow congregants at the JCCP for their comforting thoughts and prayers during this time of deep sorrow on the loss of my beloved husband, Murray. We appreciate the many wonderful years sharing our Jewish heritage and traditions with you. My children and I, and Jules and Dolores and their families are grateful for the fond memories of Murray. We will forever remember his legacy as one filled with love and generosity, commitment, strength and loyalty. Murray was under the treatment of a highly respected, cutting-edge oncologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital, who is doing research on sarcomas. As requested, donations can be made to: Robert N. 5 jewish community center of paramus President s Message Russell Rothman Several members have suggested that we include a brief summary of our board meeting minutes in the monthly Bulletin, so that our members are familiar with the issues being tackled by our board. Here is my first attempt at condensing the wonderful minutes recorded by our esteemed recording secretary, Esther Marks. Please blame me for any mistakes After his d var Torah, the Rabbi urged for greater attendance and participation at shiva minyanim. Several times we were short for a minyan and it required numerous pleas/phone calls by the Rabbi to satisfy the minyan requirements. If a family requests an egalitarian shiva minyan, it will be announced in the shiva announcement, so that women can participate and count as part of the minyan. Our executive director, Joe Herrmann, noted that the membership count is holding at 441. The lower level A/C unit, which finally expired after 30 years of use, was replaced and operational. Joe also urged more members to sponsor kiddushes and mentioned that he is actively looking to reduce costs to make it more affordable. Jack Bauer, retired super spy and currently doing double-time as 2nd VP and financial secretary, is now sending income expense statements to board members a week before each board meeting to show how each department is doing vs. budget. He is also hoping to get the new budget completed by June, much earlier than previous years, with the help and cooperation of all the committee heads and arms of the synagogue. We discussed the extent of the outside repair work and costs. In the spring, we will make the front entrance more handicapped accessible from the drive-thru area. The cost will be covered by anonymous donations. Our next budget also will include funds for a Buildings and Maintenance Committee spearheaded by Shawn Rabban. Two other committees were formed; one to create an endowment and legacy program, and another to simplify our Dedicated Funds. The Nominating Committee was elected; it began meeting in late February/early March. Fred Harris began in earnest to sell tickets for the Purim Raffle and accepted the challenge to sell more tickets than last year. He also began selling shares of tickets to members of the Board of Trustees to increase participation. A large percentage of Board members supported the raffle by either buying a ticket or ticket share with others. Fred hopes to sell out before Purim. At this time, he only had about two dozen available to sell for a complete sellout. The Israel Awareness Committee reported on its hopes for four to six events per year. Its first meeting was a big success, with more than 85 people attending. The committee is in the process of scheduling speakers, hosting one of the movies in the Federation-sponsored Israeli Film Festival, planning a bazaar for Israeli charitable organizations, and much more. Sisterhood s cooking event with Susie Fishbein in early March sold out early. Howie Leopold reported that an APT Youth Event Bingo Night was a huge success and that APT expected a big turnout for its March Talent Night.

6 jewish community center of paramus Hebrew School News Marcia Kagedan Wow! We survived the winter, with all that snow and ice! Spring has arrived and with it the anticipation of many favorite activities: baseball, barbecues, nicer weather and longer days to enjoy the outdoors. March certainly arrived with a bang so much activity here at the JCCP on the very first weekend of the month: Shabbat Across America and School on Shabbat! The weeks kept up that crazy pace with the APT Talent Show (the first ever in what I hope will become an annual event), the Alef Kabbalat Siddur, Purim festivities and the carnival and participation in other area programs, such as the Kehillah program at the Y and an Open House at BCHSJS, our regional Hebrew High that many of our students will be attending in the fall after graduation from our Hebrew School. March ended in a calmer fashion with a beautiful Hebrew School Shabbat service and dinner. A relaxed and enjoyable evening was had by all who attended. And finally, the 7thgraders presented their research projects, which I will report on in the next issue. So, you see, this March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb! Hopefully the weather did the same. April will indeed be a beautiful month with the holiday of Passover. Below is our school calendar of events. Please remember to attend our Junior Congregation services, both on Shabbat and on Passover. The Torah Coupon Store is stocking up with new gifts, so collect your coupons now! In the month of April it is possible to collect as many as 20 coupons! Registration is open for the school year. Parents are asked to contact the school office ASAP, particularly for new students, so that proper planning can take place. If you know of any families who might be interested, please let me know. CALENDAR: Sunday, April 3: Passover Candle Club for Pre-K kids, 9:45-11:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 5: Youth program, 5:30-7 p.m. Sunday, April 10: Family Workshop 7th grade optional trip to Six Flags with BCHSJS Tuesday, April 12: Youth program, 5:30-7 p.m. Last day of school before Passover SCHOOL RESUMES ON SUNDAY, MAY 1. I wish you and your families a wonderful Passover! Chag Kasher Vesameach! Open House Breakfast Sunday, April AM Free. Open to everyone. Bagels and coffee for all. At JCCP Between the Walls. Registration is now open for the school year. See what the JCC of Paramus has to offer you and your family. Open House is for the Early Childhood Center, The Hebrew School and the Synagogue. Activities available for any young visitors! Early Childhood Center News Judith S. Fox Another holiday! Just as we finish the revelry of Purim, another festival is upon us. The crush of spring events in Jewish life sometimes seems overwhelming to rabbis and cantors, synagogue professionals, homemakers, and, of course, to educators and to their students. Particularly for young children, the transition from Purim to Pesach seems to require a major shifting of gears. This year, however, in the Early Childhood Center, rather than abruptly closing the door on Purim and beginning a brand new Pesach experience, the faculty and I hope to help children see the two holidays in a larger context. The common themes of oppression and redemption are readily apparent to young children, who organize experience and information by generalizing. Oh, that s Haman they ll say, when first hearing about Pharaoh, or Just like Haman! Other similarities about the holiday stories become clear to children, especially with some direct questioning by teachers. The villains of both stories wear funny hats; the heroes of both stories are both terrified to do what they have to do in order to save the Jews; and when salvation comes, there is great rejoicing in both the Purim and Pesach sagas. And, of course, there are differences between the stories: they occur in different times and different places; Purim doesn t have anything like the plagues (no frogs!), and Pesach doesn t feature a romantic story, although it does have a great tale of mother love and family devotion. Children also readily see similarities and differences in how the holidays are celebrated. Both festivals feature symbolic foods, but oh, how different those foods are! Purim is about partying, masquerading, and fun; Pesach is about a ritualistic meal that unfolds in a predetermined way. Purim turns everything upside down; Pesach imposes order. Revisiting a previous event (or holiday) in order to help understand a new one; generalizing and differentiating; comparing and contrasting: These are sound early childhood practices that are easily applied to Jewish education for young children. Jewish experiences, like any other experiences, can help children become creative, divergent thinkers, and that s a reason to celebrate anytime! Chag Pesach Sameach! Travel with the JCCP to a Lecture at JTS Tuesday, April 12 6 PM (Leaving JCCP) The Most Rev. Timothy M. 9 GUIDE TO PESACH OBSERVANCE DEFINITION OF CHAMETZ - In Exodus 12:15 the Bible tell us, Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread: on the very first day you shall remove leaven from your houses....the Rabbis specified five grains which can become chametz: wheat. barley, spelt, rye and oats. Additionally, Ashkenazic authorities prohibited rice and Kitniot... Kitniot are usually defined as legumes, and include beans, peas, lentils, corn, maize, millet and mustard. While rice and kitniot are not chametz strictly speaking, and are only prohibited for eating, it is easiest if they and products containing them are treated like chametz. Sephardic authorities prohibit only the five specified grains, and thus Sephardic Jews are allowed to eat legumes and rice during Passover. According to Jewish law, matzah may be baked only from one of the five grains, although traditionally it is made from wheat. GENERAL LAWS CONCERNING CHAMETZ - During Passover it is prohibited to derive any benefit whatsoever from chametz. One may not eat chametz, or run a business involved in the buying or selling of chametz. Even ownership of chametz is forbidden. We are also obliged to remove chametz from our possession. This is done by a bitul, renouncing the possession of all chametz in one s household, using the kol chamira formula found in the beginning of most Haggadot. Any chametz left over should be burned. Another way of renouncing ownership is by selling the chametz in one s possession. (See Mechirat chametz). PREPARATION FOR PASSOVER - Special care must be taken with Passover foods. If a mistake is made while preparing foods throughout the year, the law provides several remedies. These remedies do not apply to the laws of chametz. The laws of annulment (one part in sixty) do not apply regarding chametz. Chemicals permitted during the year might be prohibited on Passover. All utensils, pots, dishes, counters and anything used during the preparation of food must be kashered. If it is not possible to kasher them, they should be replaced with utensils used exclusively on Passover. All areas of the house should be thoroughly cleaned and examined for chametz. A person renting a room from a non-jew (e.g. a student in a dormitory) is responsible only for the space he or she occupies. Traditionally an additional search (bedika chametz) is held the evening before the first day of Passover, using a candle (for light) and a feather ( to sweep up crumbs). SALE OF THE CHAMETZ - It is sometimes impossible to destroy or remove all of the chametz in one s possession especially when great financial sacrifice is involved (Hefsed Merubah). Therefore, rabbinic authorities used a legal device embodying a special sale called Mechirat Chametz which is arranged through a Rabbi. Since the chametz is sold to a non- Jew, it does not belong to a Jew during Passover. All chametz material to be sold is isolated from the food and utensils used on Passover. Pets and other animal food should also be sold (although they remain in the house as usual) since most animal food contains chametz. The Rabbi arranges for all materials thus sold, to be sold back immediately after Passover. PROHIBITED FOODS - Include the following: leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereal, coffees containing cereal derivatives, wheat, barley, oats, spelt, rye and all liquids containing ingredients or flavors made from grain alcohol. Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and peas; however using string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible, as peanuts are not actually legumes. Some Ashkenazic authorities permit, while others forbid, the use of legumes in a form other that their natural state, for example, corn sweeteners, corn oil, soy oil. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above. Consult the rabbi for guidance in the use of these products. PERMITTED FOODS A. The following foods require no kosher le-pesach labels if purchased prior to Pesach: unopened packages or containers of natural coffee without cereal additives (however, be aware that coffees produced by General Foods are not kosher for Passover, unless marked KP), sugar, pure tea, salt (not iodized), pepper, natural spices, frozen fruit juices with no additives, frozen (uncooked) vegetables (for legumes, see previous page), milk, butter, cottage cheese, cream cheese, ripened cheeses such as cheddar (hard), muenster (semi-soft), and Camembert (soft), frozen (uncooked )fruit (with no additives), baking soda. B. The following foods require no kosher le-pesach label if purchased before or during Pesach: fresh fruits and vegetables (for legumes, see previous page), eggs, fresh fish and fresh meat. C. The following foods require a kosher le-pesach label if purchased before or during Pesach: all baked products (matzah, cakes, matzah flour, farfel, matzah meal, and any products containing matzah), canned or bottled fruit juices (these juices often contain kitniot which are not listed among the ingredients. However, if one knows there are not such agents, the juice may be purchased prior to Pesach without a kosher le-pesach label), canned tuna (since tuna, even when packed in water, has often been processed in vegetable broth and/or hydrolyzed protein, however, if it is known that the tuna is packed exclusively in water, without any additional ingredients or additives, it may be purchased without a kosher le-pesach label), wine, vinegar, liquor, oils, dried fruits, candy, chocolate flavored milk, ice cream, yogurt, and soda. D. The following processed foods (canned, bottled or frozen), require a kosher le-pesach label if purchased during Pesach: milk, butter, juices, vegetables, fruit, milk products, spices, coffee, tea, and fish, as well as all foods listed in category C above. MEDICINES - Because the principle of pikuach nefesh (the preservation of life) takes precedence over all other laws, medicines prescribed by a doctor in connection with life sustaining therapy are permitted on Passover. Other substances used for medical purposes (e.g. aspirin, vitamins, tranquilizers) while not made from chametz may contain chametz as a binder. As a general rule, capsules are preferable to tablets. As in all cases, when a question arises, the Rabbi should be consulted. Generally we are very lenient with regard to medicine.

10 COSMETICS - Lotions, ointments and creams need no special Passover formulation. Many other cosmetics however, have an alcohol base. Those made from grain alcohol are regarded as chametz. BABY FOOD - Baby food for Passover use is readily available. If Passover baby food cannot be obtained, however, the baby s food should be prepared in a separate part of the house so that this food is not mixed with food for other members of the family. PET FOOD -Most pet foods contain chametz. Both the pet and the pet food should be sold (see Mechirit Chametz) during Passover. This arrangement can be discussed with the Rabbi. KASHERING UTENSILS FOR PASSOVER There are two basic methods of Kashering: A.PURGING (Hag alah) - Most cooking utensils can be made kosher by immersion in boiling water. This includes metal pots, most baking pans and flatware and most other kitchen ware. The procedure is as follows: 1. The article to be kashered is thoroughly scoured. 2. The article is set aside and not used for 24 hours. 3. The article is completely immersed in a pot of actively boiling water. 4. If the pot is too large to fit into another pot, the pot to be kashered is filled to the brim with water, and that water is brought to a boil. While the water is still boiling a hot stone or piece of metal is dropped into the pot in order that the water is kept at its peak heat and also, so that the water boils over the side of the pot. 5. The articles are then rinsed immediately under cold water. 6. The pot in which the articles were kashered is the itself kashered. (See step 4). B. OPEN FLAME (Libun) -Any utensils which come indirect contact with fire, such as a barbecue spit, a barbecue grill, a broiling pan or rack, is kashered by open flame. The procedure is as follows: 1. The article to be kashered is thoroughly scoured. 2. The article is set aside and not used for 24 hours. 3. The article is then put under an open flame and thoroughly heated until the metal glows red hot or is so hot that a piece of paper is singed when it is touched to the metal. SPECIAL CASES - Utensils with wooden handles cannot be kashered, because particles of food which could lodge between the handle and the blade cannot be effectively removed by purging. The proper method to kasher glassware is to soak it in clear water for 72 hours, changing the water every 24 hours. Fine (glazed) china that has not been used for twelve months can be considered as new. Earthenware and other pottery cannot be kashered, since the material they absorb cannot be purged. Most glazes are porous, and thus cannot be kashered. Utensils covered with a non-stick surface such as Teflon can be kashered like other utensils. Countertops and tables made of Formica or Abroite should be thoroughly scoured. Those made of wood are scraped with a steel brush. The surface is then left bare for 24 hours, after which the surface is thoroughly rinsed with boiling water poured directly from the pot in which it was boiled. APPLIANCES - An oven is thoroughly scoured. The burners are then turned on full until the metal glows red hot or a piece of paper is singed when touched to the metal. Remove all plastic knobs from around the oven to prevent melting. If the oven is of the continuouscleaning type (not self-cleaning), the Rabbi should be consulted. The shelves and bins of refrigerators and freezers are removed in order to facilitate cleaning. The shelves, bins and walls are then thoroughly washed. A metal sink is kashered as a large pot - a porcelain sink cannot be kashered and should be thoroughly scrubbed with heavy duty aluminum foil. Plastic tubs should be used to wash dishes. The interior of a dishwasher is thoroughly scoured, paying careful attention to the strainer over the drain. The dishwasher is left unused for 24 hours and then run through a wash cycle without soap. Any metal surface of a small appliance that comes in contact with food should be kashered by purging. Plastic parts are treated as mentioned above. An electric frying pan which can be immersed, should be purged. Many electrical appliances cannot be immersed and therefore cannot be kashered. An electric mixer should have its beaters purged and its bowls either purged (metal) or washed (glass). An electric can opener should have its blade and magnets removed and purged. The rest of the appliance should be cleaned so that no food remains in any crevice. MICROWAVE OVENS - Microwave ovens present a special case since the inside surface does not become hot. One recommended procedure is to thoroughly clean the inside and then place a dish of water into the oven and allow it to boil for a few minutes. If the oven is a combination microwave and standard oven, consult the Rabbi.
