3 The story of Noah s Ark Everything had been perfect in the beginning. God saw that God s world was very beautiful. God had made people to be his friends and given them his world as a gift to enjoy and take care of. But the people were not kind to each other. They thought only of themselves. They did not care about each other or God s world. They stole and killed. They made the world a terrible place to live. Noah! God said one day. Soon there will be a great flood that will cover the world. I want you to build an ark. Noah loved God and he trusted him even when people laughed at him for building an ark so far from the sea. When it was ready and covered in pitch to keep out the water, the animals came to Noah, two by two not just camels or goats, but lions and leopards, giraffe, tigers and flamingoes all trooping through the large door in the side, until it closed behind them with a bang. The rain started: steady, dropping, heavy rain that made the earth and vegetation smell good. But the rain swelled the streams into rivers and the rivers into a flood that day after day, week after week, covered the land. Noah s family and all the animals sheltered in the ark. Safe and sure, it floated higher and higher on the floodwaters until even the tops of the highest trees were covered. Even when the rain stopped, Noah, his family and all the animals waited on the ark, day after day, week after week, month after month, until God told them it was safe to come out. Noah opened the door on to the new earth, like a warm spring morning, bright and clean. Noah looked up at the rainbow in the sky. Thank you, he said to God. Thank you for keeping us safe. Thank you for the chance to start again.
