He tells Noah, who is righteous and walked with God, that He will destroy the people and the earth with a flood. He gives Noah plans to build an ark and be saved. Noah does everything God tells him to do. Building the ark took about 100 years when Noah was about age 500 to age 600 years old. Genesis 6:3-22; 5:32; 7:6 7 Days God Shuts Door of Ark God tells Noah to go into the ark with twos of some animals and sevens of other animals. In seven days, God shuts them all in. Genesis 7:1-10, Days The Flood Begins The underground waters burst forth and the rain falls 40 days and nights covering the ground. Noah, his three sons, and their wives are safe in the ark along with every kind of animal and bird, male and female. Genesis 7: Days Water Covers All The Earth After the rain ends, the water covers all the land and even the mountains. The ark floats safely high above the ground. Even the highest mountains are under more than 20 feet (7 m) of flood waters. No one is left alive anywhere on earth, except for Noah and those in the ark. The water covers the earth for 150 days. Then God sends a wind to blow across the waters and they begin to recede. Genesis 7: Days The Water Goes Down and the Ark Rests God does not forget Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. He makes the water continue to go down. On the 17th day of the 7th month of the year, the ark rests in the Ararat mountains, five months from the time the flood began. Genesis 8: Days Mountain Tops Are Seen The water keeps going down and the mountain tops can be seen on the first day of the 10th month, two and a half months later. After 40 days, Noah checks the water. Genesis 8:5, 6 28 Days Noah Sends Out Birds Noah goes to a window and sends out a raven. Then he sends a dove every seven days. At last it brings an olive leaf; and finally it doesn t return. Genesis 8: Days 601 Years Old Noah was 600 years old when the rain began. Now he is age 601 on the first day of the first month. Noah wonders if the land is dry. Genesis 7:11; 8:13 57 Days Noah Opens the Roof Noah opens the ark roof and sees that the earth is almost dry. By the 27th day of the second month, the earth is completely dry. God tells Noah that they can leave the ark and the animals can go, reproduce, and live all over the earth. Genesis 8:13-19 A New Start Noah builds an altar and offers some of every clean animal and bird sacrifices pleasing to the LORD. The rainbow is a sign of God s promise (covenant) to never again destroy all creatures with a flood. Genesis. 8:20-9:17

JEPHETH HAM SHEM No one knows for sure. Maybe the ark has survived in the mountains of Ararat (ancient Urartu), but the Bible does not give a specific resting place. Gomer (Cimmerians) Madai (Medes) Magog (Scythians) Javan (Greeks) Cush (Ethiopians) Mizraim (Egyptians) Elam (Persians) Asshur (Assyrians) The political situation in the area, plus the icy terrain and weather of the mountains, have prevented many expeditions. A shepherd boy in 1905 and pilots in World War II claimed to have seen the ark. Dozens of groups have searched for it. So far, not one of the sightings has gained much acceptance. Tubal Meshech Phut (Libyans) Arphaxad The ark was the salvation from complete destruction for Noah and his family. In the same way, Jesus is the salvation of the believer s soul. (Genesis 7:16; Matthew 24:35-39; 1 Peter 3:20, 21) Tiras (Thracians) Canaan Lud (Lydians) Do you think more people would believe God s Word if Noah s ark were found? Why? or Why not? See Luke 16:3. Aram (Syrians) After the flood, Noah s sons went to different areas. What is the lesson to learn from the flood and the ark? See Matthew 24:35-39; Luke 17:26-30; Hebrews 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:1-5; 3:1-13; Isaiah 54:9, 10 Gomer Javan Lud Tiras Aram Magog Meshech Tubal Asshur Madai Mt. Ararat? 8 Types of Christ in Genesis A type of Christ is similarity between something or someone in the Old Testament and Jesus Christ as He s revealed in the New Testament. Read through each type of Christ found in Genesis, reflect on the meaning, and write a few thoughts in the space provided. Adam: Where Adam became a living being, Jesus the last Adam became a life giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45). Noah s Ark: The ark was the salvation from complete destruction for Noah and his family. In the same way, Jesus is the salvation of the believer s soul (Genesis 7:16;1 Peter 3:20, 21). Isaac: Willingly submitted to his father s will in order to be sacrificed, Jesus also submitted to His Father s will in order to be sacrificed (Genesis 22:1, 2; Hebrews 11:17-19). Jacob's dream: Jesus said, Verily verily I say unto you, Hereafter thou shalt see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man (John 1:51). Jacob had a dream of a staircase bridging the gap between heaven and earth (Genesis 28:12). Jesus is that staircase between God and people. Joseph: Joseph suffered for the salvation of his people. Jesus suffered for the salvation of the world (Genesis 50:20) RW Research, Inc., Rose Publishing, Inc., Torrance CA May be reproduced for classroom use only, not for sale. 7
