1 HARVEST MEN'S BIBLE FELLOWSHIP INDUCTIVE lesson 02 LAST WEEK IN REVIEW For most of us, the story of David and Goliath is a familiar one. As we dig deeper into this chapter, we'll utilize this familiarity to help you to better understand the chapter's surrounding background. This section is full of two other types of observation exercises: comparing and contrasting. The word compare means, "to examine (two or more things) in order to discover their likenesses or differences." The word contrast means, "to compare or appraise in respect to differences." Many times throughout this chapter people and other subjects are compared or contrasted. By making close observations of this we will learn invaluable insights into God's Word. Remember: Make a list on a separate sheet of paper of any comparing ideas or contrasting ideas that you see throughout this chapter. For the next few days, we will focus our attention on the battle scene in chapter 17. Gather as many facts as you can about the scene before asking questions such as: Where is this battle taking place? Who is at the battle? When does the scene change? Why are there only two who will fight? What is holding up the actual engagement? How often is the challenge given, and who cowers and who responds to it? Remember: Asking questions about the text helps you interact with it, probing it with questions that help you to see the material more clearly. Day 1 [ 1 ] Read through in one sitting to become familiar with the text. As you do this, continue asking questions (who, why, what, where, when, and how) concerning the material of the text. On a separate sheet of paper, note any repeated words or phrases that you see. [ 2 ] Read through :1 11 and describe the scene below in your own words. [ 3 ] Using your available resources, perform research on the Philistines. You may use a Bible, a Bible dictionary, a Bible concordance, the Internet (keyword: Bible dictionary), or any other pertinent resource. You will want to know where the Philistines came from, whom they worshipped, what technology they had access to or developed, and why they were in Israel. [01]
2 The Making of a Man of God / Inductive Studies in the Life of David [ 4 ] Using a Bible dictionary, look up the word reproach and note what you find. [ 5 ] Read 1 Samuel 11:1 11 to learn more about another time that the Philistines wanted to put a reproach upon Israel. Day 2 [ 1 ] Read through the chapter again, noting any comparisons or contrasting issues on a separate sheet of paper. [ 2 ] A repeated word in this chapter is defy or defied. Mark this term in a special way in your Bible. Look up defy in your Strong's Concordance or other lexicon (dictionary) and note what you learn about its meaning here. According to vv. 8 9, what was the specific challenge? What did it mean for the loser? How many total times was the challenge issued? [02]

According to 1 Samuel 12:14, whom were the children of Israel called to serve? [ 4 ] According to 17:11, what was Israel's reaction (including Saul the king) to Goliath's challenge? According to :26, note David's reaction to this challenge. [ 5 ] Who offered to fight and what was the reward to the man who would fight the Philistine? Day 3 Read : If you haven't marked the repeated word delivered, do so now. [ 1 ] Look up delivered in the Strong's Concordance and note how it is also used in this chapter (be sure to mark it the same way). [03]
4 The Making of a Man of God / Inductive Studies in the Life of David [ 2 ] According to 17:32, what did David tell the king of Israel? What was Saul's reaction? Using 1 Samuel 16:7 as your basis, what was Saul looking at? According to 17:42 43, what was Goliath looking at? [ 3 ] In v. 37 Saul issues an instruction to David. Write what he says below. At this point, who is representing the nation of Israel by confronting its enemy? [ 4 ] According to 17:37 and 17:46, in whom does David put his confidence? [04]
5 The Making of a Man of God / Inductive Studies in the Life of David Day 4 [ 1 ] Using :4 7, 38 45, list all the weapons of Goliath, Saul, and David in the area below. Goliath Saul David [ 2 ] Using the word but David gives us a classic contrast. Using the below area, list what you learn about this and contrast how each warrior approached the battle. Goliath David [ 3 ] What weapon does Goliath see in David's hands in v. 43? Is there something he doesn't see? [ 4 ] Note how David approaches the enemy in v. 48. [ 5 ] According to v. 52, how far did the battle go that day? [05]

[ 2 ] Is this the lesson most people know about the story of David versus Goliath? [ 3 ] According to v. 47, what was the lesson for the nation of Israel that day? [ 4 ] In v. 45, David came against Goliath "in the name of the Lord of Hosts." Research the terms lord and hosts in a concordance or Bible dictionary. Note what you learn about each word below. [06]

Use this day to perform your own study on the chapter. You can look up words that you want defined, compare or contrast things you have seen, or mark more of the repeated words.
