The Ancient Story DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES of a Modern People

The multi-media Jewish Children's Museum, the first of its kind in the world, opened in 2005 on Brooklyn's Museum Row. In every corner of this innovative 50,000 square foot, 35 million dollar facility, Jewish life and history come alive through creative and accessible multi-media activities designed to engage, entertain, and educate. Through exciting hands-on exhibits and dazzling technological displays, the Museum is successfully bridging the religious and cultural gap in our communities. In its one year of operation, the Jewish Children's Museum has welcomed more than 250,000 visitors! Hundreds of school groups representing every faith and ethnicity continue to be inspired at the Museum every single day.

A New Age... A New Stage This is only the beginning We are about to launch "the next big thing." The addition of our fourth floor exhibits will double the excitement, double the attraction, and double our potential to inspire and educate children from across the cultural and ethnic rainbow. This new five million dollar project presents the opportunity to become a partner in the effort to teach tolerance, respect and understanding to the leaders of tomorrow.

Abraham & Sarah T he large, four-sided tent of Abraham marks the start of the fourth floor journey. The tent itself embodies a central message of Abraham s story: His role in sharing his faith and founding a nation.

A mong the many exciting features of this exhibit are the Unseen Force display representing Abraham s unwavering faith in the face of many trials, which are displayed graphically or animatedly, and a self-rising dough bag reminiscent of the miracle of Sarah s dough.

The Patriarchs & Matriarchs This section introduces visitors to the forefathers of the Jewish people. Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Leah are all represented in these exhibits. They each possessed unique traits that contributed to the values of Jewish living.

Jacob s Twelve Tribes J acob s Ladder is easily recognizable in this shimmering display. Impressive light works will make angels appear to be climbing up and down the ladder! Also in this section, an oversized set of 12 matrushka dolls - each representing one of the Twelve Tribes - can be separated and arranged on the marked floor grouped by their birth mother. Isaac and Rebbeca Wells and water are recurring themes in the story of Isaac and Rebecca. Rebecca demonstrated her compassion by drawing water for Eliezer s camels. The centerpiece of this display is a large well, kids will raise buckets filled with sights and sounds relating to Isaac and Rebecca.

Joseph in Egypt T he story of Joseph, his brothers, the journey to Egypt, and Joseph s reunion with his brothers is a rich narrative filled with action, suspense, intrigue, and surprise. The outline of this novel-like tale will be presented in a wallfrieze reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphic. Other features of this exhibit will include Joseph s Coat of Many Colors and a Nile River graphic novel.

The Exodus Theater An immersive Sound and Light Show where a simulated burning bush will serve as the gateway marker for the series of illusions, stories, and messages contained within this theatrical environment. The exodus from Egypt will be brought to life in a dazzling showcase that will feature a Red Sea fountain, the Ten Plagues and the Ten Commandments to name a few.

The Tabernacle The Walls of T his display area lets kids peek into a section of the traveling Mishkan - Tabernacle. Kids will get the big picture in a hands-on activity in which they build a scale model of the entire structure. Jericho Crumble Re-enact Joshua s famous victory at the Battle of Jericho. Kids will sound shofars to cause the walls to fall. Rising from this crumbled wall is a colorful map showing the settlement of the 12 tribes in Israel.

King David The centerpiece of this display is an oversized harp. The strings are actually beams of colored light that can be plucked to produce musical sounds. Kids will enter their names and ages into a computer, to print a certificate for the Psalm corresponding to their age. The Holy Temple T he magnificent Temple in Jerusalem became the center of the Jewish nation, Jewish worship and now, the center of an exhibit! Standing around a model Temple, kids will hear details of how the Temple functioned. Lighting effects will spotlight appropriate areas of the Temple complex as they are described in the narrative.

Seven Blessed Fruits of the Land This section will hold specimens of the seven blessed fruits promised to the Jewish people in this land of plenty (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates). Activities will include seeding and watering to make these fruits grow. Holy Sites in Israel Ahuge map of Israel filled with lively drawings of places and events will pinpoint some of the major landmarks. A large magnifying glass will allow kids to take a closer look, offering a brief video visit when stopping at a landmark.

The Land of Israel A s visitors enter this area, they will walk onto actual stones transported from Israel! In addition to the maps and activities that describe the Land, kids will experience the First Fruits Race. The first fruits of the land were set aside as offerings. Players aim water pistols at a tree trunk to raise a fruit to the top. The fruit that reaches the top first will be declared the first fruit.

The Mishna, Talmud and the Sages T his exhibit will use an animated diorama to introduce the process of passing on an oral tradition. Each figure will flip as that person goes from receiving the message to passing it along. The oversized pages of the Interactive Talmud are pop-up panels that unfold like the petals of a flower. Peeling back the panels uncovers information of Talmudic history and scholarship.

THE ARIZAL The slowly rotating globe in this display symbolizes the concept of tikkun olam, repair of the world. Kids will piece together the sections of the fractured globe, and make it light up from within. This visual metaphor represents Luria s description of the Jews obligation to repair the world. HILLEL A famous story of young Hillel tells how he climbed a roof and listened through the skylight as scholars discussed the Torah. Oblivious to the cold and snow, he nearly froze. Kids will be invited to climb on a gently sloped roof and peek through a skylight into a recreated indoor scene below. Putting their ears to the glass, they will overhear a lively discussion among scholars. THE CHAFETZ CHAIM The Magnetic Poetry activity at this exhibit symbolizes the Chafetz Chaim s compilation of laws against gossip and slander. Magnets can be attached to a metal message board which bears the headline, Choose Your Words Carefully. Kids then choose which words to use in order to write phrases. THE BAAL SHEM TOV The 18th century music box at this showcase will play traditional Hasidic melodies. Nearby, a group of Dancing Chassidim symbolize the spirit of joy and enthusiasm that the Besht s movement brought to Judaism. RAMBAM-MAIMONIDES The activity at this showcase focuses on Rambam s 13 Articles of Faith, which symbolize his role in interpreting complex law and theology in a simple way that even a non-scholar could understand and remember. RASHI Rashi is responsible for composing the most comprehensive interpretation of the Torah and the Talmud. This accomplishment is simply and quite literally portrayed in this display with an illegible Talmud page, made legible through a RashiScope viewer. SA'ADIA GAON Sa'adia Gaon is best remembered for his excellent command of Arabic. This enabled him to bring his commentaries on Torah and halachah to the assimilated Jews of his day in a way that they could easily read and understand.

The Diaspora Map Alley of Courage Against all odds, the Jewish people have survived. These displays let you track their growth on an interactive map. Behind the globe is a replica of the Western Wall. A monitor embedded in the wall will feature a web-cam of the real wall, Visitors will be able to write notes and slip them into the wall to be sent to Jerusalem. B ringing the concept of the Holocaust to young children is a sensitive task. Without ignoring the enormity of the Nazi crimes, the Jewish Children s Museum approaches the topic from a positive angle, highlighting the stories of bravery, devotion and faith. Some of these inspiring stories of faith during the Holocaust are told on film by the survivors themselves.

The Jewish World Today S nippets of song, the chant of a cantor, the voice of a child reciting a prayer, a few bars of a Ladino folk song, a yeshiva student studying Talmud, an Israeli newscaster delivering a weather report in Hebrew, these and other sound bites will bring to life the many facets of Jewish life today.

One Good Deed I n its final gallery, the Museum will end at the end with the coming of the Messiah. This incredible pavilion will include exhibits that teach concepts such as cause and effect and how each good deed brings the world one step closer to the time of universal peace and harmony.

Community Mosaic T he final section in this gallery will be a long-term communal art project that encourages children to see their small action as a part of a greater whole.

Noah s Ark Toddler Play Space T he toddler area, in the form of Noah s Ark, provides a lively, interesting, Jewishthemed play space for young children. A dress-up corner, hand puppets, speaking tube, art area, Velcro wall and stuffed animals are some of the activities that young children can enjoy while their parents watch them from comfortable seating perches. Inside each of the Ark s portholes, video monitors display footage of animals, so kids can peer into the Ark s "passenger quarters." The sounds of animals and rain on the roof will complete the experience.
